Patriots GM Search

The idiots on the radio this morning were stirring up crap saying the Pats search for a GM is a sham, like it's their fault there's the Rooney rule. they don't have a choice, it's a league rule and like the article stated they would have been in violation of the rule if Wolf took credit for final say.

That’s what they exist for. **** talkers.

I don't think the Pats should be punished for it, but the Pats are at fault. They made it a sham. They made Wolf GM in everything but name back before the draft. Now they want to act like they didn't and are interviewing in good faith, when it's clear that they're not. That's the part I don't understand. Why didn't they interview and then name Wolf GM (or whatever) when they named Mayo coach? By lots of accounts, they had already made up their minds then and didn't need to see Wolf run the draft to be sure.

Not sure, could they have named him GM of did they always have to follow the Rooney rule?

They would have needed to interview then. But they could have claimed the Highsmith interview was for the GM and then hired him for a different position and done one other interview. There was no reason they had to wait until now to do interviews, especially since everyone now knows that the job is Wolf's.

Executive Vice President of Player Personnel? All this jumping through hoops and he doesn’t get General Manager?
Well, he doesn't have say over the coach.

I think that is the rub. A GM runs the whole show and is over the HC. EVP of Personnel would give him control of the draft and free agency but not coaching decisions. Which IMO aligns with what Kraft has been saying he wants - Wolf and Mayo to operate in tandem as opposed to one guy acting unilaterally.

But also that Kraft wants final say over the HC and GM. I guess he had that before, but it was all in one with Bill.

There will always times that someone has to make a decision (see Abbott & Costello, Laurel & Hardy, Lennon & McCartney, the 3 Stooges when Curly is having an attack)....sounds like a Kraft solution.

I think it's interesting that Wolf has said he'd prefer Maye to sit and learn behind a vet for a while and Mayo has said that it's a competition for QB1 and Maye is in it. I assume Mayo has control once practice starts and I don't think this is real strife. I assume they've talked about the plan going forward, but there have definitely been times when the two are not on the same page just in this first offseason.

You may be right. But what would Hunt do that they don't have Groh or Highsmith for? I don't completely understand how the personnel department works beyond pro and college scouting and writing contracts, but it seems like those roles are already mostly accounted for. If they're pushing Groh out, maybe. But if they were pushing him out, they have a funny way of showing it by having him be involved in every major decision.
Truthfully I would rather bring in Samir Suleiman to a role of salary cap Chief. Give him some title

Yeah, maybe both interviews were really for other roles. I assume we had people for these kinds of roles, but with elevating Wolf, maybe they need someone to take over his former duties who isn't already on staff.

I think getting a QB at 3 was a must for the Krafts
Season tickets can get muddy when fans feel there is bad situation with the team
Getting a new Face of the Franchise was important to bring hope back
I think Wolfe knew he was making the choices. I also believe he made them with the idea of them being his true beliefs. His career hung on him making the right choices.
But I am sure he also heard Kraft saying that he would like a QB at 3. I think it matched to do what he felt was right and what Ownership actually wanted.
I feel Kraft having a pick at 3 with a QB heavy draft. Held out to have it felt that Ownership will have last say if he felt someone was going rogue.
Now that he trusts Wolfe he will give him a title

Especially if the reports that Wolf loved JJ weren’t fake.

They know damn well Jonathan and Robert didn't make those picks. Trying to stir up **** and cost us more draft picks. ****ers.
I certainly hope they didn’t… Then again, that would mean that Wolfie picked both Wallace & Robinson…

How would that cost the Pats draft picks?
The article is insinuating that the Pats had Eliot Wolf calling all of the shots but are playing it off as though Pats ownership called the shots as a way to circumvent the Rooney rule. As far as picks being docked, it was more of a tongue in cheek comment. Everytime the Pats are in the news I assume picks are going to be docked.

Maybe, but I wonder, with Groh being in every meeting and big decision, if the plan isn't to elevate him to some sort of official or unofficial assistant GM position. I also wonder what Highsmith's ultimate role is.

I wouldn’t trust Al Groh’s kid with driving the company van to the right airport.
