Re: Merriweather a NY Jet - Soon to be Champs

Sometimes Belichick makes mistakes, I know this may shatter your worldview, but it's true.

Releasing both Sanders and Meriweather with Josh Barrett the apparent answer seems like a mistake right now.
Why is it Belichicks fault that Josh Barrett and Sergio Brown give the team a better chance to win than Brandon Meriwether or James Sanders?

Re: (Edit: debunked) Merriweather a NY Jet - Soon to be Champs

How about we watch the replacement(s) play before deeming them inadequate?

Jack, seriously, why cut him now? This is his last year, he'll play for that contract and he's still on his rookie deal. What's the effin point? If BB doesn't want him on the field, then start Sergio Brown over him and sit him. But why cut him ? What the bleep does that buy any one ?

Because he's not one of the best 53 players on the football team.

Belichick may make mistakes but this isn't one of them. Sanders can't cover, Meriweather can't tackle. Both are mediocre NFL Safety's at best and are easily replaceable.

Let's apply this logic through the magic of time travel:

Why is it Belichicks fault that Reche Caldwell and Doug Gabriel give the team a better chance to win than Deion Branch or David Givens?

If Belichick and the team were considering jettisoning 2 of our top 3 safeties I seriously think they needed to have invested more into the position this offseason.

Seriously, it's an interesting question. Probably they just wanted the roster spot and weren't willing to give up Barrett. But it's always possible there's a little more to it.

Suppose [total speculation alert] they felt that Meriweather was not the kind of guy to take well to sitting on the bench in a contract year. If he showed signs of sulking/dogging it/sowing dissension over his reduced role, that could make Barrett the more attractive option.

I agree with this.

It seemed like just a year ago safety was one of the deepest positions on the team, and now we got squat.

It sounds like some of you want the guy to play for the Jets.

Yeah, let him go and then we can pick on him the whole game. He'd make the same stupid mistakes with them as he did with us.

Have to say, I'm surprised by the release, but not really discouraged. We still have talent at safety.

Belichick has proven the naysayers wrong too many times to doubt him again.

My bet is either there's a move for a veteran in mix, or that Belichick knows more about Brown or Barrett than we do.. which would be a safe bet. If nothing else, I think we can expect solid tackling and discipline from Brown.

So true, and w/o looking it up, I'm pretty sure the average draft position of the 5th-10th best S's in each year since 2004 has to be vying with ILB's as the lowest average draft position.

So unlike say DE, DT, OLB, S can be found in UDFA, FA, cuts a good deal more easily in comparison. Or a good one on a team with no hopes for the post season could be had for less then a King's Ransom.

I seriously doubt BB has no road map on his issues at S and RG for that matter.

I thought about it for a bit, Meri somehow always seemed to fit into that group that includes Watson, Maroney, Adalius, Hobbs, etc. Had the body, maybe even had the brains, but didn't apply it, or go for it in a way that satisfies BB. BB seems to have been cleaning house on those guys for a few years now. Nobody can say the man doesn't know what he wants.

Don't really get this move.

Interesting how in the eyes of the media it's always the players on offense who need to be "smart enough" to play in that system yet I see Brandi Meriweather as a playa who was never smart enough to play in BB's defense.

I'm still baffled how we weren't able to get anything for him. Even Maroney got us a move up in the draft from 6th round to 4th round. Merriweather is a 2 time pro bowler, making next to nothing and in a contract year. Did we wait too long to shop him?

And yes, looking at our current lineup at safety is scary to say the least

The NJ Jets* got a 5th Rounder for safety Dwight Lowery

Re: (Edit: debunked) Merriweather a NY Jet - Soon to be Champs

The "Soon to be champs" in the title of this thread is an absolute joke. Just how many Super Bowls have the Pats won with Merriweather in the backfield?

NONE!

It's not his fault, but come on. I blame the OFFENSIVE LINE FOR THAT MORE THAN THE DEFENSE. But that's for another thread.
I know my opinion won't be popular, but I have never been a fan of the way Merriweather plays. This move wouldn't have been so bad if we had someone to replace him. I will just wait and see how this all works out for now.

Another candidate for GM. How about McGowan how did we get him? Victor Green?

Did it hurt us to let go of Wilson or Milloy (bet you were all over that one - "THEY HATE THEIR COACH").

Just send in the resumee, please.

I'm a little less scared than you...maybe because I was more scared by Meriweather? But I'm with you in surprise that they couldn't realize any value for him. Pre-cut trades were scant around the league, though, and it's worth noting that Meriweather (unlike Lowery) didn't have to clear waivers.
