Patriots cut safety Brandon Meriweather(merged jumbo thread)

Maybe BB plans on having a single Safety this year and running a base 4-4 defense. :bricks:

Too many teams have a claim ahead of the rats. If he makes it to them they will claim him for sure. The Rats, more than most teams, seem enamored with big names and former high draft picks. Being able to play is secondary to bragging rights.

Meriweather is a vested veteran. Once released, he is not subject to waivers, and free to sign with any team of his choosing.

I predicted GIANTS and still stand by it

I said I'd hate if he fell to the Jets for some reason.

I thought a FA could sign any where since there is NO CLAIM. correct me if I am wrong

Re: Pats trying to trade Brandon Merriweather

Great! He can destabilize their D and help us beat them then. :bricks:

If he was freestyling too much here (I'm not expert enough to know if this was really true), then the Jets are a great place to be. They have a great and a pretty good corner, and it would allow their safetys to play free-er

The Bears,Cowboys or Dolphins seem to me to be the biggest players in the market for a Safety.....
besides New England,that is

I think he will end up in Dallas though

Re: Pats trying to trade Brandon Merriweather(was cut by Patriots)

So they automatically win another ring by cutting Meriweather? Nice logic.

By the way, the Pats had a VERY GOOD idea what they were getting with Harrison. He was an acclaimed head hunter and damn fine player that BB coveted long before he actually signed him. The assertion that he was an "unknown" is absurd.

Actually, that's a little bit of revisionist history. The media portrayed the move as Bill oddly adding an injured over the hill safety that Schotsie cut who nobody beyond the Raiders had shown any interest in who played the same position as Milloy. They wondered aloud all off season how he would use the two of them as a result. Turns out Bill had a plan, to use one as a team captain...among other things. They said he was overpaid at 5 years $16M but there was also no way he would see more than a year or two of the deal...

WOW, BM cut!!! Whos left to hate now that hes gone???

WOW, I just traded him this morning for Rogers-Cromatie and a 2nd rounder on Madden 12!!!!

The most surprising this is that he's been cut with such little depth at safety for us, but I guess if you push BB with all these bonehead plays then in the end you'll get cut.

Word ahead of the 2012 draft will be of us taking one of the 10+ great pass rushers...no wait safetys in the first round, but we won't take any, only to acquire 5/10 of the during free agency

I'm sure BB has someone in mind to replace BM, I just hope it doesn't turn into the same situation as with Jason Taylor. I think he released someone (not sure) and thought Taylor was going to sign with the Pats, instead he re-signed with Miami.

So do any of our safeties know how to cover something besides returns?

BB drafts DB's EVERY year, usually more than one.

Really surprised by this move. I mean, he was over-rated as a player. But cutting him and Sanders without a proven back-up seems scary.

Hopefully they saw something from Sergio to justify this move but I'm a bit concerned.

If I'm not mistaken, Meriweather has four years of service, so he's a UFA now, and doesn't go through waivers.

They have a question mark at FS, but they had that with Meriweather and the new guys have an upside whereas Meriweather had leveled off.

Buh-bye Meri, we hardly knew ye.

I would guess the plan is something like 2003 and 2005: start with the backup (Antwan Harris / Guss Scott) and then his backup (Je'rod Cherry / Arturo Freeman), then just start plugging in big corners (Eugene Wilson / Artrell Hawkins) until something clicks.

I'm no fan of Meriweather, but BB better have a very good replacement.
