Player Signing Patriots Claim 4 on Waivers

Can't believe they're keeping Milton. He's the ultimate Fathead sticker - looks amazing on paper, but can't play QB.
We'd be so much better off to add depth where it's needed (everywhere on the team) and sign a ~3yr QB on the PS to be the emergency guy.
Who did we cut that can play in this league?

It’s amazing how people want to defend Kraft refusing to pay his share to build a quality team
They should of spent more I'm just not sure why today is the day to go off over it.

They put together the 53 and added a few minor pieces and I'm way more interested in what is here than shoulda coulda woulda and I really don't agree with the way some are taking it out on the guys that are here.

You didn’t miss anything. Obviously the jury is out and everyone has to prove themselves..players, coaches and staff.

I’m just preaching patience with the new regime. There are some here who think that everything can be fixed in one offseason. I’m not saying the new regime has been perfect, but I’m taking a wait and see approach before I start piling on.

Besides, nothing we say or think is going to have any impact on the success or failure of this team. But it is fun to talk about…

Let’s hope the Pats show improvement this season and continue to build on that. That’s what we all want.
I'm 100% a fan of the new regime. I think that they did a much better than expected job this off-season. I am fine with $30M of cap space to pass on to next year. I presume that they didn't sign a couple of top defensive players because a deal couldn't be reached in 2024 off-season environment. That should happen next year. And, other than the needed 2 OL's, I see a draft focused on Defense, after ignoring the Defense this year.

And yes, OT's are hard to find. We signed Onwenu and Okorafor. We even signed the only OT available on waivers. There were to guards who can play some LT. We signed one of them. Folks are kidding themselves if they think that next year's OT class will be anywhere close to this year's.

This is not a good football team. Many players don’t belong in the league or are going to have a role they just aren’t good enough for.
Thats not “taking it out on the players” it’s calling out management for not trying to build a competitive team. Kraft wouldn’t pay his fair share to build a roster. How can we be ok with that?

What did they do that was better than expected.
Can you name a single good player they tried to sign and couldn’t, aside from the failed attempts at Ridley and Aiyuk.
If they had tried to build a quality roster and failed, I’d wonder why they failed, but at least they tried. I saw no effort to try. We pretty much sat out free agency aside from guys who were cheap.
They showed no interest in spending the 50 million they have. And it’s 50 not 30.

I would love to feel good about the new regime. Can you give me any examples of what they did that should make me feel positive. We look like a 2 or 3 win team. How can that make you feel good?

I thinks it better than you think

The team probably could have spent $30M on one-year contracts and perhaps made the 2024 team a 6 or 7 win team. The team CHOSE instead to save the money for 2025-2027.

You strongly disagree with their approach. OK.

My only real problem with their approach was that they thought that they shouldn't improve on Love/Anderson as one of our LT's. That choice endangers the future of the franchise.

It’s a conversation and we disagree. I wouldn’t make a statement if I hadn’t thought it through. So when you raise a point I already considered in forming my opinion what would you like me to do? Say oh well, never mind?
I am pointing out what I see as the flaw in your argument, such as saying it would be dumb to sign free agents because they are all JAGs but at some point in the future we are going to get some great free agents.

1) So you would agree the Patriots didn’t believe that this year, right? Based upon their actions.
2) Why would I as a fan watch 3 years of decisions and not assess whether I think they are good or not? I am not saying fire them today, I’m saying so far I think they have done a terrible job, for the many reasons I stated. Of course what happens on the field is what matters and if their decisions equal success my prediction was wrong.
3) so why did we pass on so many that would have made contributions to this team and leave so many holes in the roster?
4) So we post on a patriots message board and we aren’t allowed to have opinions on the patriots?

I have always been one of the most optimistic Patriot fans in the world. I always trusted that the team was doing what it felt best to win. I just don’t feel that any more. I think they are acting negligently to the fans by not really even trying to field the best team. They chose not to spend 50,000,000 that they could have spent. Why? You can easily find 50,000,000 of players, many times over that would have made this team better. We didn’t even try to sign them. We only signed cheap players. That is not doing what is best for the team.
In all seriousness, I appreciate your passion for the team. I can tell that you’re a true fan.

We might have some differences of opinion on how the team would be best served in creating long term success; but we both want the team to be successful. You want the team to consistently win again and so do I.

The FA money issue this season is what it is. That ship has pretty much sailed for the 2024 season. The good thing is that we can spend it next year. Hopefully that FA market will be better than this year.

Convince me.
I just start with QB and I think both Jacoby and Maye are better than Mac.

And we can see about the rest. I'm expecting some good and some bad but I think at a bare minimum we are little better than 4 wins and if some things actually break our way maybe a couple games better. But more importantly I just hope come December we have enough to at least feel positive kind of like the last month of Drew's rookie year.

BTW, let's be clear about the Defense. The team did indeed to all but ignore signing new Defensive players while they focused on extensions.
After all, they thought that we had Judon and Barmore for this year. If that were the case, we (well certainly I) wouldn't be fussing about the Defense.

All your posts, and I mean dozens and dozens in just the past 2 weeks, are criticisms of the GM, in his first 8 months on the job. Or Kraft's supposed cheapness as to why we haven't blown thru the available cap.

Give it a rest, those are boring topics, actually worse than boring, they bring the board down and I for one am pretty sick of it. How about let's assume the GM is doing as well as can be reasonably expected and that Kraft will spend as needed, and discuss the players, coaches, and games?

A player that really intrigues me is offensive tackle Demontrey Jacobs, the guy is a better athlete than Okorafor and Lowe. But what is really interesting is that he has a ridiculously wide arms and wingspan along with being a better athlete. And I don't mean a little, Okorafor has a wide wingspan and so does Lowe... Jacobs is stupid wide. His wingspan is as wide as Trent Browns. It has to be one of the widest wingspans in the entire league at 87 3/8 inches.

He's also had a year in a good program with Sean Payton in Denver and many fans and media members there assumed he was going to win the backup swing tackle position there. This is important, he plays both sides well.

Maybe Denver thought they could slide one through the practice squad, which is odd because he played pretty well in preseason... if so they may have screwed up. Finally Wolf's obsession with long arms may pay off, not because he found another guy with long arms... but because he found a good athlete with long arms.

So you want to ignore the truth and pretend that what we are seeing with our own eyes is not happening?
Feel free to not read my posts if you don’t want to deal with reality. This didn’t have to happen. Remember that during the season.

So no reason, just hope?

This is a personal gripe for me but swing guys are backups by definition. If they played either side well they'd start. At best they suck tolerably on both sides.

It's why I want them to go all-in on making Wallace either a LT or RT.

Why would they spend 30 million on one year contracts. They should have been signing players that will help the team get better and be here 3,4,5 + years.

How does saving money for other years compute? Why wouldn’t you get the players that are available each year. Why wouldn’t you make the team somewhat competitive and improve each year. Are you really saying they are going to just build the whole team in one year of free agency?
I can’t fathom how people think it’s ok to say we just don’t want to compete now, and justify it by saying of course they will want to compete in the future and then they will do all those things they aren’t doing now. Why not do them now?

@Ring 6 , you have worked yourself into that most desired of places that so may of us wish we could find. You expect this team to be the worst possible version of itself such that any glimmer of hope, any infinitesimal accomplishment, is a cause for celebration. If the Patriots so much as take another NFL team into the 4th quarter with a lead, it will be an achievement beyond the likes of which you could not, at this moment, imagine. Your season is destined to be full of miraculous surprises and moments of unparalleled joy.

2024, for me, and so many of my fellow homers, (especially those of us who went to Carolina who have followed Drake Maye's progress from the time the rumors started that basketball player Luke Maye's little brother was going to come to Chapel Hill), is going to be filled with trepidation and horror at every tiny set back. Guys like me are praying the Cole Strange comes back soon and are examining the make and model of Sidy Sow's walking boot in search of a hint that he won't require amputation. We live in fear that our expectations will be smashed on the rocks of 2024 as we careen to the days of Rod Rust.

Unlike yours, the lives of guys like me who see eight or nine wins, are in for crushing disappointment and perpetuation of grim, insecure nights until the Patriots are mercifully eliminated from playoff contention and we return to the enormous pride and confidence that comes with the Bruins having the best regular season in hockey until the playoffs roll around and...

Oh, how we wish we could be you.

There is no competitive football reason to not spend the resources you have to make your team better. None. (The only reason for a one year cap underspending is balancing like the 49ers are doing. They are 40+ mill under because they are 50 mill over next year because they pushed money out)
We have consistently been near the bottom in cash, we asked the GOAT to play for less, we rarely signed free agents at value. We were always cheap, we just found a way to make it work.
So it's OK for others to underspend this year because they know they will need to overspend next year. Wouldn't it be logical for this team to do the same as it builds it's young core on entry contracts and push money out knowing that they will have to overspend in future years as that core moves on to 2nd contracts. In addition, by then they ar hopefully planning to be competitive so they can justify targeted free agent contracts in areas of need. Alternatively they can spend to the cap when they aren't in a position to win and then not have the cap space when they are. Yes, they could just spend to the cap (or effectively above by pushing money out) and pretend it will never come home to roost, but eventually it does.
