Davin Joseph took visit to Patriots - espnBoston

Would not mind an extra Guard for competition. Just like we brought in Gallery last year before he decided to retire.

Wonder if we could save money but cutting Connolly and adding Davin?

Why would we cut our backup center. Some think that Connolly should be competing with Wendell for the starting center job.

He used to be very good, but he tore his patellar tendon, missed all of 2012, and supposedly played poorly in 2013 (I didn't watch enough, but the running game was solid). He then drew nearly no interest in the offseason, so I'd have to guess his medical history is a concern. That said, worth a camp spot and a flier.

Yes but, most "backups" at OL aren't counting 4 million dollars against the salary cap, if that's how we're going to view Dan Connelly.

I wouldn't mind seeing him stay for a salary reduction or even an extension of reasonable pay, but with Wendell, Cannon, Kline, and an expected draft choice in the top several rounds, I can definitely understand why we'd be exploring other options.

The only reason why many want Connelly to take over Wendell's job is to see the dynamic duo broken up, and to take the (assumed) lesser of 2 evils. That would allow the RG position to be taken over by Cannon, Kline, or the expected draft pick, and hopefully improve the interior right/center portion of our line, which was the obvious weakness last year.

I may agree after we sign Joseph and draft a center.

I see us as fine on the left side with Solder, Mankins and Kline.

We are, at best, OK with Wendell at center.

You are fine with Vollmer, Cannon, Joseph and a draftee on the right. That's fine, especially of the draftee is a RT/RG type.

That leaves no backup center except Cave and Barker, and one of them would be the 9th lineman. I'd rather have Connolly.

If we pick up Martin or Richburg and Cannon moves to RG I can see both Connelly and Wendell both cut at the 53 man cut down....Both are getting paid too much to be back ups...

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'd rather have Connelly as well---but one has to look at that salary cap hit of 4m dollars and wonder.

We've certainly seen plenty of other examples where that didn't fly with Belichick. We'll have to see how it ends up sticking, but I'm still seeing Connelly as a potential cut if he doesn't agree to a pay reduction, especially if a new player or two are added via the draft, or even the late stages of FA such as Joseph.

I can see one or the other being justified, but not both. Of course, Belichick may see things differently. It will be an interesting situation to monitor.

To nitpick, it's Conolly's $3M salary that matter, not his cap hit. And I do think that someone who can start at RG and C will at least be there throughout camp. Perhaps, just perhaps, one of the rookies will be ready to be able to start at 2 positions, and be the first player off the bench. As we did with Light, I think that we'll keep Connolly an "extra" year while his replacement develops.

Of course, much depends on the quality of the rookies and whether they are ready to take on major responsibilities. Perhaps, we will use a 1st or mid 2nd. I sort of doubt it. I might do it, but that isn't the way of Belichick.

Just out of curiosity, what is the thinking where his 3m dollar salary is worse than his 4m dollar cap hit? They both seem pretty equal to me in the sense that the value isn't there.

One category we have a limit on, along with the other 31 teams. To me, that's the number that matters more.

I had a vision last night that Joseph was signed and that during TC he performed up to his 2011 level and won the starting RG job, and that Connolly was moved to Center and that Wendy was finally cut.

One of my close friends is a Bucs fan so when we go to the bar to watch football I see a lot of Bucs football too. Joseph played like one of the worst guards in the NFL last year. Whether that was due to injury recovery or him just falling off, the 2013 version of Joseph would be a sharp decline from Connolly at RG. I think the Pats were just testing the knee out, but if it looks like his play last year was more related to decline than injury, then they need to stay away.

What about Richie incognito, any news? Did he visit any team for a workout in this offseason?

Just like Keller if he's healthy bring him in on a low risk contract and see what he can do.
