Patriots 9/3 53-man roster cuts thread

Yikes on Grissom. Cutting a third round pick before his second season is pretty bad. Looks like this is one of those cases where Belichick would have been well-suited not to zag when everyone else is zigging.

If you take away injury picks (Gronk, Vollmer) where the Patriots decided to accept the injury situation because of the talent, BB's probably no better at out thinking the room than anyone else.

Probably depends a lot on if you consider McCourty an "outthinking the room" pick. I do, so that's a pretty big win right there. At the time the pick was made, the draftniks on ESPN knew almost nothing about him and had to scramble through their notes to come up with "he's great on special teams" to explain the pick. For like a week after that, Jets fans everywhere were gloating that they'd got the superior CB a few picks later in Kyle Wilson, and they weren't just being delusional idiots. That was a pretty common narrative.

I also think the Harmon pick, which was considered a huge reach at the time, has worked out well. Chandler Jones was considered a reach at the time he was drafted, and I've definitely got no complaints about that pick.

So...

There's at least one RG available, there are a couple of RBs worth bringing in for a look, and Cecil Shorts/Justin Hunter might/might not be WRs the Patriots have enough interest in to bring to town for a look/talk/signing.

Personally, I think we should all forget about who got drafted where the instant the draft ends, because after that point, what does it matter? Draft choices are like lottery picks. The higher ones have better odds than the lower ones, but outside of that, once the player is in camp either he works out or he doesn't, and when he doesn't, it's time to move on.

Except that in nearly every round in almost every year he picks later than most.

They had McCourty as a CB, so I'd say it's an iffy call. There are all too many Tavon Wilson type picks, though, IMO. I see what BB's doing. I just think his obsession with athleticism and numbers has sometimes gotten the better of him.

When averaged over the years (13 or so at least), the Pats have the best record in the NFL, so averaged over the years he doesn't pick later than most, he picks later than all. And that is before Al Capone stole two #1 draft picks.

For 15 years Belichick has drafted dead last on average behind all other teams and loses 1st round draft picks because of cold weather, filming from the wrong side of the field EDIT: and trading himself to the Patriots.

EDIT: Drafting without 3 1st Round Picks out of 16 which is a loss of 19%.

He's a hell of a lot smarter of a gm than some posters want to give him credit for.

Agreed - it' like asking someone what their GPA was when they're applying for their second job.

What does this have to do with the "out thinking the room" (i.e. Wilson, O'Connell, etc...) picks? Are you saying that some of those picks are more about desperation because of overall positioning?

I'm glad our team will cut a draft pick in a second because we replaced them with better players that cost us little.

I guess we could be like one of those draft "winners" [Cleveland and Jacksonville got "a" from Kiper this year]. Or one of those teams afraid to cut a high pick, or a name veteran, so they hang on, while also overpaying for big name free agents during the "splash" period.

I guess I'll have to live with sucking at personnel and going to the playoffs every year.

My interpretation of "out thinking the room" was that the "room" was other GMs. If BB is being compared to other GMs (what I thought you meant), then of course the "starting place" counts. The Titans GM clearly outperformed BB last draft with the treasure trove of future picks he received, but of course he had the overall number 1 pick to play with (by virtue of having the worst record in football) while BB didn't have a draft pick until the late second round by virtue of a combination of Commissioner Al Capone and the Pats winning record.

Did I misinterpret what you meant by "out thinking the room"?
