Flame me like a GOT season 8 writer...I've released Slater and Ebner. They are both fantastic ST only players...releasing them now is 1-2 years to early...but we need the room for a 4th-5th WR that can contribute on offense...or elsewhere. Right now I prefer to keep a couple young players that can develop into roles on Offense and Defense for the future then ST only great players. We have young players at WR, OL, LB, CB, SS that may be able to contribute some this year on Offense and Defense AND play ST that otherwise might be released to keep some ST only players.
Slater and Ebner are great ST only players...but I think the younger guys need more opportunities to prove they can take over if needed...and Bill encourages that...I just don't want to lose out on some of these younger guys.
I mean, I think even you knew as you were writing it that they're not actually cutting those 2.

So, you keep Obi and Gant instead of Slater and Ebner. How unpatriotic can you get?
And just BTW, neither is like to have opportunities to develop into roles on Defense. I doubt that we would sit McCourty, Chung and Harmon down a dozen times to have these guys develop. Even if there were to be an injury, Jason would likely be our emergency #4 safety, or Brooks would be.
I don't have Sam making the team, but his case is much different than Obi or Gant. He is a solid STer and was good enough to make thee team last year before he was injured.
========
As an aside, if we were to cut Slater and Ebner "1-2 years early", Belichick would probably carry a couple of more STers, perhaps Calhoun and a player TBD.
Agree with everything but I am not suggesting sitting players like McCourty, Chung and Harmon. I was only referring to ST only players.
What role do you think Gant and Obi would have?
Curious, why do some people like Izzo over Anderson? Or vice versa? I don't know much about these guys.
Exactly. For me, the issue IS the roster.
It seems that you are essentially proposing that LeCosse should be considered our 5th WR/ 3rd TE. One possibility is that we keep 4 WR's and 2 TE's.
That gives us
OFFENSE (23-25)
QB (2-3)
WR (4)
TE (2-3)
RB (4)
FB (1)
OL (8)
ST (2)
Izzo is an in-line blocker. Anderson is a big WR/ move TE.Curious, why do some people like Izzo over Anderson? Or vice versa? I don't know much about these guys.

2 years ago I’m pretty sure we only had 8 total all season even with injuries.

We will have to agree to disagree. I won’t throw personal insults at you though.Typical Andy. Can't be bothered to look beyond his nose. Take a look at the SNAP COUNTS..
The Patriots carried 9 OL in 2017. Cole Croston was inactive most games. He was the 9th.
The Patriots used to carry 10 OL. Then they reduced it to 9. 8 has been the exception, not the rule.
Never been fan of older ST only players. In a perfect world the younger folk are there while they learn how to be good offensive or defensive players.

I just don't get why we have this discussion every year. Maybe 7 is the magic number.
So I did a little investigating and these sorts of things apparently happen at sports fan forums. I think we need to keep an eye out for that... and perhaps magic 7.
