9 OL is not unusual and should be expected given various circumstances involving the 2019 OL group.

Created with Pats Picker: Pats Picker 2018

    QB (3) T.Brady, B.Hoyer, J.Stidham
    RB (5) S.Michel, J.White, D.Harris, B.Bolden, J.Develin (R.Burkhead traded for draft pick)
    WR (5) J.Edelman, N.Harry, P.Dorsett, D.Inman, B.Berrios / M.Harris / J.Meyers (D.Thomas PUP 6 weeks, J.Gordon SUS 3 weeks)
    TE (3) B.Watson, A.SeferianJenkins, M.LaCosse
    C (2) D.Andrews, T.Karras
    G (3) S.Mason, J.Thuney, H.Froholdt
    T (4) M.Cannon, I.Wynn, Y.Cajuste, J.Veldheer
    DE (4) M.Bennett, D.Wise, C.Winovich, J.Simon
    DT (4) L.Guy, M.Pennel, A.Butler, D.Parry / D.Shelton
    ILB(3) J.Bentley, E.Roberts, B.King
    OLB(4) D.Hightower, K.VanNoy, J.Collins, C.Sam
    CB (5) S.Gilmore, J.Jackson, J.McCourty, J.Williams, D.Dawson (J.Jones traded for draft pick)
    SS (3) P.Chung, O.Melifonwu, M.Gant
    FS (3) D.McCourty, T.Brooks, D.Harmon
    ST (3) S.Gostkowski, J.Bailey, J.Cardona (unpopular decisions: M.Slater released, N.Ebner released)
    Total players: 53

Flame me like a GOT season 8 writer...I've released Slater and Ebner. They are both fantastic ST only players...releasing them now is 1-2 years to early...but we need the room for a 4th-5th WR that can contribute on offense...or elsewhere. Right now I prefer to keep a couple young players that can develop into roles on Offense and Defense for the future then ST only great players. We have young players at WR, OL, LB, CB, SS that may be able to contribute some this year on Offense and Defense AND play ST that otherwise might be released to keep some ST only players.

Slater and Ebner are great ST only players...but I think the younger guys need more opportunities to prove they can take over if needed...and Bill encourages that...I just don't want to lose out on some of these younger guys.

I mean, I think even you knew as you were writing it that they're not actually cutting those 2.

So, you keep Obi and Gant instead of Slater and Ebner. How unpatriotic can you get?

And just BTW, neither is like to have opportunities to develop into roles on Defense. I doubt that we would sit McCourty, Chung and Harmon down a dozen times to have these guys develop. Even if there were to be an injury, Jason would likely be our emergency #4 safety, or Brooks would be.

I don't have Sam making the team, but his case is much different than Obi or Gant. He is a solid STer and was good enough to make thee team last year before he was injured.
    ========
As an aside, if we were to cut Slater and Ebner "1-2 years early", Belichick would probably carry a couple of more STers, perhaps Calhoun and a player TBD.

Agree with everything but I am not suggesting sitting players like McCourty, Chung and Harmon. I was only referring to ST only players.

And we wouldn't sign players to just play ST. The point of releasing current ST only players is to allow existing players on the team to play bigger roles on ST AND on Defense and Offense.

What role do you think Gant and Obi would have?

Curious, why do some people like Izzo over Anderson? Or vice versa? I don't know much about these guys.

I see Izzo as a blocking TE...he has decent size and could be an in-line blocker. Anderson is just a large WR IMO.

    Exactly.

LaCosse is WR5, TE3 and will play substantially on STs.

Izzo is an in-line blocker. Anderson is a big WR/ move TE.

I view Anderson competing with LaCosse and Izzo competing with Ben and ASJ

Sometimes players are held back because of who is in front of them. This is a blank statement regarding all positions....not just Safety. Gant and Obi are not replacing any starters on defense in 2019...but maybe they or someone else could replace a vet ST only player if given the chance.

Typical Andy. Can't be bothered to look beyond his nose. Take a look at the SNAP COUNTS..

The Patriots carried 9 OL in 2017. Cole Croston was inactive most games. He was the 9th.

The Patriots used to carry 10 OL. Then they reduced it to 9. 8 has been the exception, not the rule.

We will have to agree to disagree. I won’t throw personal insults at you though.

Yes there were 9 during 2017 when I sorted the roster by position Croston was listed without a position.

8 seems to be the norm, 9 the exception and 10 an anomaly. Of course when you are starting the season with injured players on the 53 that can change things.

And this is why some teams have perennial top ST and others lose games because of their ****ty ST play. Because they don't pay enough attention to ST but just put their depth players on there.

    Every year like clockwork.

Put on irrelevant people like Berrios or Meyers on the roster who both will easily be able to make the practice squad. Keep players like Obi because of where he was drafted even though so far he has shown absolutely zero over actual impact players that had their hands in winning titles. Hell even Gant is a big question mark unless he can actually pick up some of the ST snaps at the same quality. He also looks more like PS material.

I just don't get why we have this discussion every year. Maybe 7 is the magic number.

So I did a little investigating and these sorts of things apparently happen at sports fan forums a lot. I think we need to keep an eye out for that... and perhaps magic 7.

What ? Never learning how ST is an important unit that sets the tone for the entire team and not some kind of irrelevant group of jokers ? Because that is what happens here. Every year.

And every year during the season we get shown again and again how investing into ST players pays off.

Honestly I like most of your projection. But leaving off Ebner and Slater but keeping some of those PS candidates is remarkably shortsighted.
