ALSO on Drake DRAKE MAYE Maye, is his increased football smarts or knowledge of the system; he is calling audibles and shifts based on what he sees from the D.

RHAM in his press conference said Drake saw he had a DE lined up against him and audibled him to that route.

One of those things that you can’t see necessarily on film, particularly if you don’t know what the original play call was. But hat gets him a quick option / knowing where the ball is going, makes him quicker.
I think that was against the Jete, when Rham was wide open for an easy TD into the left side of the EZ. IIRC Rham had lined up wide left, and when he motioned back inside the guy on him switched up and tried to rush inside while Rham went out with the DE trying to cover him.

I was talking about the video clip from the Miami game that shows Rham split out wide to the right, lining up outside the numbers. Not sure but thought he had a CB on him. Rham gave a nice subtle head fake in toward the post and as the DB bit Rham turned back out for his TD. It was a thing of beauty!

I found Dan Orlovsky’s video breaking down the play against the Jete that ended up with Stevenson covered by the DE for an easy TD. Very nice analysis. Interesting that Rham initially lines up outside the numbers to the left, then motions inside to take his stance next to Drake. Then the next week Josh lines him up outside the numbers on the right and he runs a nice sluggo. What’s next?

I think you are right about the play you are talking about. But not the one I am.

I was pretty sure the interview was from this week, Mia game. What I may have misspoken is if the pass went for a TD or just big yardage. I also think it might have been same play called in both jester & Miami game. IIRC what Rahm was saying was Drake didn’t audible the entire play, only changed his individual route from the previous time they ran that play.

I wonder if it was going to be the same play just right side not left, but Drake saw the CB over Rham instead of the LB so switched the route because it wasn’t the look they expected?

EDIT TO ADD: I think that was it. Box score says Rham had only two catches against Miami. The other one, that was not the TD, was at 3:11 of Q2, short left for 7 yards then pushed OOB at the MIA 17. Doesn’t sound like big yardage or a noteworthy situation. That was during the drive that ended five plays later with a blocked FGA.

So I’m thinking Drake saw that Miami reacted differently than expected to Rham lined up out wide and made the adjustment.

They were both sweet plays. Of course any play where your RB catches a pass and goes in for the ATD untouched fromm15 or 20 yards out is a nice play.

The interesting thing is Maye was said to be taking sacks early in the year instead of throw it away when he should. Since this 8 game shift with less sacks the completion % has actually gone up.

I think Maye using his legs a little more is a big reason why. He now seems to have more of a plan in his head about what he wants to do. When to move, where to move. When you run and when to just toss it away. He has really shown improvement on a lot of things this year over the course of it in real time.

Like with all young players sometimes fixing ond mistake leads to different ones, and that happened with Maye but he seems to have everything really ironed out right now and looks to really be settled in his style of play.

Sacks, fumbles and ints are all down. He is even missing high less, but now when he misses it looks to be more wide. Which is better than missing high. He needs to fix that to missing low next year.

As for the o line they deserve credit for fewer sacks too obviously. As do TEs and RB. Trdyvon has improved in pass blocking as the year has gone on... It was very spotty for a while which was surprising. It isn't just lack of sacks either. Thx OL and Moses had a holding issue early. It went away as things got in rhythm.

what I am noticing is how deep a drop Maye often takes, which makes his OT's jobs harder, but Maye is now feeling that outside pressure, and climbing the pocket, while still making accurate throws. earlier in the season, when Maye felt that edge pressure, he would run, rather than step up.
It was pretty much like a switch got flipped in week 3 or 4. Maye suddenly had complete pocket awareness and grasped the importance of small moves — a la Brady — to avoid pressure. All while maintaining his high level of mobility for bigger movements.

Average athlete, not strong, couldn’t stay healthy for one offseason… binkie blindness.

Draft or find someone….
When you said not strong I wondered how you determined that. I saw he benched 225 for 22 reps at his pro day. That's not great but not bad but then I saw that James Devlin did 225 for 46 reps but Mike Alstott only did 24. It got me thinking more about the difference between strength and power. It has me going back to Will Campbell and thinking I take the measurables with a grain of salt and put more weight in what the tape shows. I havent watched any film on Lampe, not that impressive I take it?

I agree, it’s a big picture thing. Alstott was a very good athlete, he generated a lot of his blocking energy with leverage, mass and motion. Develin or the DT the Ravens utilize Patrick Ricard have strength and/or pure mass… the same could be said of using Tonga on short downs.

But a poor and not very strong athlete at a position that prefers one or the other or both is poorly built for the NFL. This isn’t small college football. Westover knows where to be in his blocking assignments, he just doesn’t get a lot of push. If he meets a similar sized guy, he can get a hat on a hat… beyond that the results are nothing special. That’s why Tonga comes in. Also he does zero for this team in the passing game, even if he gets an outlet pass it’s not like he has Alstott athleticism to turn it upfield.

Lampe is a cool name, he blocked well at a small college in the Mid-American Conference… he couldn’t get out of camp healthy. Not surprising, he’s not overly strong and not a good athlete. Like I said… binky bias, a lot of flash with little substance. He’s the Bam Childress of FB’s.

Never missed a college game due to injury. You have to be a tough SOB to play 47 consecutive games at FULLBACK.

He’s the Bam Childress of FB’s.
Because he was on the Patriots?

The MAC Conference isn’t the NFL. There are studs coming from the SEC who fail in the NFL because they aren’t athletic enough.

Michael Sam was the SEC Defensive Player Of The Year, I said he would fail pre-draft because of his terrible athleticism. I was accused of being a homophobe, that had nothing to do with it.

Flash forward he tumbled to the bottom of the draft and washed out completely in the NFL. I said the same thing about Ronnie Perkins and he was a bust as well.

Success in college isn’t overly meaningful once you’re in the NFL.

Brock Lampe from the MAC will fail in 2026 because gay Michael Sam from the SEC failed in 2014…got it. This is very insightful

I said he’s a poor athlete… I couldn’t have been more clear.

By the way… the next time someone tells me Chuks Okorafor is good or Garrett Bradbury is bad because PFF said so… be sure to follow proper PFF protocols of writing that opinion down on paper, wetting it with a good lube and inserting it in your rectum.

Look what PFF is saying now about the player they ranked dead last among starting centers when we signed him. I told posters it was Kevin O’Connell’s scheme, they argued it was the player.

Now compare that to when he was signed:

Don’t ever mention PFF player grades again… thanks.

It has improved. I still think they need to invest in improving it even more. Moses could retire and it's the second most important position(s) on offense after QB. A legit replacement for Andrews at C is probably needed.

Nobody said that

Added a "s" to the line to emphasize that both our offensive And defensive lines need to be top-8-calibre in order to win Sunday and the following week too especially without Tonga or, besides maybe Gregory, anyone even close to a reasonable facsimile thereof... Thanks Eliot, and Matt...

This hasn’t gotten enough attention.

Over the last 8 games Maye has only been sacked 13 times. And it was for only 39 yards meaning must of them are minimal losses.

First 9 games he was sacked 34 times for 152 yards.

Incredible improvement but the line but also by Maye by moving with more purpose and plan. I d love to see the numbers on off platform throws.
I was just talking about this with a Bronco fan friend of mine. ewww, I know.

He was looking at overall sack numbers so I had to educate him on the growth of the OL in pass pro and run blocking, while informing him how much better Maye has become with his pocket awareness.

Agreed, offensive and defensive line are areas teams should look to improve or bolster every offseason. You’re never good enough there until you are.
