At the meetings this year the owners are going ot vote on making the season 18 games starting in 2012 and dropping 2 preseason games. all the reports sound like it'll pass by a lot

so what so you all think of this and yes they can vote on it with out talking to the players about it. they'll ahve to get the players to agree after but there is nothing stoping them from voting it in

I don't have a problem with it as long as the team gets to pick their last two games of the season from the UFL Teams.

I love watching football and the pre season is probably too long, but while more football sounds better we'll just end up seeing more end of season pointless games between teams that have no playoff chance and teams that have locked up their playoff spots.

Now, this thread reads like it's been written by the NFL player association. The players don't have to play. They get paid very, very well and will get paid even more. They know the risks. And if theres 18 games it will just lead to more rotation and less snaps for the starters, coaches like BB are too smart and will find ways to adapt.

In fact, as Pats fans we should all want this too go ahead, we have the best coach in football who will find a way to take advantage of the system before everyone else just like he did with the salary cap.

Fans want it. Almost all fans.

Some fans are in denial or just dumb, but the owners know that fans will watch every game.

Going by this thread, you're more in the minority viewpoint than the massive majority you seem to think.

Your rationale following the above quote, sounds a lot like how NHL owners convinced themselves to expand to 32 teams and destroy their sport.

Yeah, it's weird that some peeps are saying "fans want it", when every poll, even ones on this site, indicate the vast majority of fans don't want an 18 game season. Eventually the overwhelming evidence persuades even these "people" that most fans don't want it. Then they resort to thinking rediculous crap like all these peopple "simply hate change" or that the majority are "doomsayers", instead of re-evaluating their own opinions.... TBH, it's a particularly disturbing disorder.

I know of very few fans that want it and very many fans that are against it. If they really wanted to improve football they’d wouldn’t have an extra game but rather they’d have an additional bye week.

The league talks about improving player safety, how better to do that than to give them an extra week to rest, players always talk about how they don’t want to face a team coming off the bye week because they’re so much fresher.

From everything I've seen, the fans do not want an 18 game season. They don't want a watered down product. It's the biggest complaint about the 4 pre-season games. That the only game that really excites fans is the 3rd one because the 4th doesn't mean much since the starters play one series and are done. The 2nd,3rd and 4th string players are the ones it is more meaningful for as they are fighting for their life.

The owners want to maximize revenue. Period. But I'll be honest, they are doing that now. Pre-season games are full price for most teams. Concession prices are the same. Parking may be cheaper, but I don't think so. So, this idea of them going to an 18 game schedule to maximize revenue doesn't hold water with me unless there is language in their TV contracts what would raise the amount of those contracts by X dollars for each added game. But, even then, the owners would also be looking at an increase in player salaries by X amount as well since there is no way the players would accept an 18 game schedule otherwise. The only benefit I see there is that the owners would actually make a few dollars more in profits on interest because the money would be spread out over 19 or 20 weeks instead of 17.

Another factor is where would the 2 games come in? Would they add a week at either end of the season? Would they start the season in Mid-August?

A third factor is how the opponents for the 17th and 18th games would be decided. Currently, they have a system that makes sense. The only thing I can think of is that they add 2 other conference games. Which would add addition travel expenses for the teams..

People watch all the games now. I just don't see where this additional revenue is coming from other than from TV. And I question how much of that would be the case since the NFL is still trying to push it's own network.

Good points DaB; it's one thing to embrace watching "more football" but there'll be some blowback on a few levels. Plus how can we avoid eventually getting a watered down product? My fear is, God-ell's already changed the game (wussified it according to some) so how can furthur wussification not occur with this new season plan. Somehow it will, maybe not right away but down the road, jmh2cents tho.

My reaction's always been: I don't like it. I don't trust Goodell, admittedly that's a big part of it

People here are funny. They say they don't want the extended season, but then every single one of you that said that knows they will watch every single game that they play, be it 12 or 24.

It is simple, fans want to watch football. They will watch the extra games, the owners will make more money. The rosters will expand so more players will be able to play and get paid. The players will get more money from the expanded revenues. And suddenly President's Day weekend will become one of the biggest party weekends of the year. Yea sure a few of us will complain a bit about watered down talent, but that won't matter to most people.

In truth it is a win win for everyone, owners, players, and fans, that is why it will pass, and shows, once again, why football is the most successful professional sport in the US.

This is a bargaining chip, nothing more nothing less. The owners will pass the new 18 game regular season then agree to back off it in exchange for some other CBA nugget that they covet.

Many fan sites have had polls about an 18 game season. In every case I have seen, fans overwhelming vote against it. Try talking to real football fans... the vast majority are against extending the season.

My hypothethis is that fandom is bimodal. Most of those fans who get into their team in excruciating detail like many who post here see the downside as it affects starting players health and the resultant deterioration of the quality of product on the field. The larger population of casual fans who still really do like watching on Sunday simply see 18 as a source of more TV games that they like.

Of the fans who are for the 18 game season, I wonder how many have actually played the game? Obviously I've never played but you don't have to be BB to understand that football played at the professional level is pretty grueling to say the least. 2007 had its price.

EDIT: I agree with whoever said they're for it if the teams get to choose the last 2 opponents from the UFL.

I would put a very large amount of money on the fact that you are in the minority here. You also probably skip the playoffs when they roll around too, right? You might get one of those poor players hurt playing that extra game or 4.

Skipping week 12 of an 18 game season isn't anything like skipping a playoff game.

Give this man a cigar...It's like the 6 year FA rule added to the expiring CBA and calls for blood testing. Owners have created a series of bargaining chips to dangle in order to get the deal they want. They want a rollback in % of pie and a slowing down of cap growth tied to net revenue and a cap on rookie deals and ideally language that allows them to recover a portion of signing bonus if players screw up...

In the end though if it means more players and more money don't think the union won't embrace the 18 game schedule whether their members do or not... About the only time the NFLPA asks for rank and file player input is when they call a strike vote, and even then it's only because they have to.
