All accounts say that he has been leading a relatively normal life in Florida, with great relationships with his ex-wife and with his kids.

To me, it is quite understandable that someone with 4 major surgeries in 3 years occasionally has issues with prescription drugs. Perhaps, he shouldn't ever be driving, but that it tough.
