OT: Raiders WR Henry Ruggs fatal suspected DUI crash; (update: Desean Jackson to replace him on Raiders…lol)

If you are drunk, a defense attorney would advise not to take the sobriety test. In many states that results in an automatic suspension of your license, but that is a small price to pay in exchange for reasonable doubt. And yes I know they can compel a blood draw later on, but that takes hours and creates problems of its own. Often such blood draws and not admissible.
If I may respond to my own post...

It turns out the above is pretty much what happened. He refused the sobriety test on scene but blood was drawn.

I sure as hell hope the authorities who drew the blood crossed all their t's and dotted all their i's. I want this POS to go down for as long as possible.

Rich people go to jail too sometimes. Sometimes something like that counts against you in a trial. Prosecutors/judges/juries can be concerned with making sure they are not seen as giving preferential treatment to a celebrity so they come at him harder than normal. But IMHO, in this case, there is no such thing as "too hard" for the prosecutor to go at him.

This is true. I recall that kid in Texas who killed 4 people while driving under the influence and he only got 10 year probation. He'll get a high powered lawyer and chances are he'll get less than what he deserves.

wasn't that the affluent defense?

Reading the news reports, I am just stunned at the stupidity of people. driving that fast in a residential neighborhood?!?!? athletic skills and money still can't fix stupid.

What an awful story. Why do the drunk drivers always survive and the innocent victims get the worse end of crashes like this?
Most boxers can take any punch from anyone, other boxers included. If they see it coming. It's the one they don't see that KO's them or sends them into retirement.

Yeah that was the case. His attorney -

Before sentencing, Couch's attorneys had argued that Couch had "affluenza" and needed rehabilitation instead of prison, arguing that Couch had no understanding of boundaries as his affluent parents had never given him any.

Not sure if this was discussed earlier in the thread, but Donte Stallworth drove under the influence and killed a 59 year old man in 2009. He was sentenced to 30 days in prison. The NFL suspended him for the 2009 season and he came back in 2010. It's not exactly the same scenario (driving only 10 MPH over the limit), but there is a possibility Ruggs comes back depending on what the prosecutors/judge do to him. If it's a light sentence, then yeah, Ruggs can sign with another team down the road.

I’d think speeding at 160 mph in a commercial/industrial area and causing a death would be a major crime regardless of DUI, no?

Also, I believe the blood draw becomes an issue when the BAL drops below the threshold, so if you were actually driving with a .14 but hours later you’re around .08, then issues of accuracy/proof come into play. If pulled 2X the legal limit after all that time, should be solid.

The more I read about this, the more I hope he gets the max.

Me and my wife got hit head on by a drunk driver a few years ago hit us head on, luckily we weren't hurt too bad but we did have minor injuries. He was fine, try to make a dash but a few people who saw it pulled over and chased him down, Come to find out he just got out of jail for a year for DUI and within a week he was back in. They put him back in for 5 years I think. These millionaires have no excuse.
Thank the heavens you both were OK. You are extremely lucky in a very unlucky situation.

Ruggs speeding at 160 mph down a city street, having his victim burn up in a car, having a loaded gun under his seat. I hope he gets the max and does at least 15 years behind bars. Although he has a clean record these actions sound like it is norm for him. Alot of these prima dona athletes get entitled because of their talent and money making skills and have alot of wrongdoings squashed. We had one who played at Florida.
Saying that my sympathy for the victim’s family.

I hope they really nail him but he'll probably get probation or have to wear an ankle monitor with home confinement. This is the exact reason the NFL has designated drivers

You may end up being right. The Judge already said he has never seen this type of vehicular manslaughter with the speed and the way the victim deceased. He may be made an example of. People are going to be furious when his case comes up with the way the victim passed and the speed factor with a loaded handgun under his seat

There is no probation for DUI with death in Nevada. If convicted he'll have to do 2 years of prison minimum.

Don't want to sound insensitive of the situation but I would claim him if he clears wavers right now. He is still a kid. 22 yrs old I believe. I think he will end up getting 18 to 24 months which will make him available at age 24. I believe Stallworth went though the a similar situation.

A twenty-two year old is not a kid, but even a kid would know that you don't drive a car at 150 mph.
