OT: Ortiz Appreciation Thread

Sox got swept yesterday. Sad to see Big Papi's last game come in the form of a playoff loss. Legends like him deserve to end their careers on a better note. He registered some of the best numbers of his career, in what may be MLB's finest farewell season.

I don't want to see what just happen to Ortiz, happen to Brady. If and when Brady decides to retire, I hope he can leave with 5 rings instead of 4. I hope he can win at least one more Super Bowl, before hanging up his cleats.

Given the talent on this team (Baseball's 3rd highest payroll, a Cy Young candidate and MVP contender) and the record coming into the playoffs (#3 seed in the American League, and the best record since All-Star week) it's fair to have expected the team to at least run deep into the playoffs

Getting swept by Cleveland (with half your payroll, and missing their best players and 2 of their starting pitchers) is like Brady and Pro-Bowl studded Pats team being knocked out of the first round by a under-manned AFC opponent.

I will surely miss his clutch hits and clubhouse leadership. I really hope he changes his mind..

There was a period a few years ago (when he was hitting a walk-off once a month) when I had an unhealthy level of man-love for Big Papi. He needs to have more than just a statue at Fenway. There should be towns named after him.

Been following baseball a long time. That team had potential, but it was highly flawed - especially within the pitching staff. None of the starters would be more than #3 on the 1994 Expos or 2004 Red Sox. The relievers were unreliable and shaky. The lineup had potential, but too many younger players who are a few years away from being ready for playoff ball. They were a good group. But only good. To expect anything more than what happened is a bit much. "Would have been nice" is all that could be expected.

Unfortunately they really never had the pitching to make a serious run - thought the bats would've given them a bit more, however.

Big Papi was never my favorite player in any season, but is my favorite player all-time.

You would like to see Brady leave a champion, whenever that day comes. Winning one more only satisfies that requirement if he retires immediately afterwards. I would just prefer he keeps competing at a high level, with many shots at championships.

Getting swept from the playoffs sucks, but at least Ortiz saw the post-season. Ted Williams left on a high note, after a miserable losing season. Every time the Boston greats leave, I think of the article penned after his final game and final homerun. You just don't see articles like those today.

2004 ALCS games 4 and 5 were just so insanely clutch. And he kept on delivering. Once in a lifetime type player if you live in any other city.

Porcello had a hell of a year. Farrell ruined our second best pitcher in Steven Wright by using him for a pinch runner and he got hurt. Farrell needs to be the first to go. He cost us quite a few games with his bonehead managing.

Papi made the 04 Yankees the owner of the biggest choke job in sports history. The man pulled our butts out of the fire a ton with his clutch hitting. He also propelled us to the 2013 title. He is a legend and deserves fist ballot HOF induction.

Ortiz was awesome. No other way to put it. Among myriad clutch home runs, I'll remember him most for his speech after the marathon bombing. "This is our f**king city!"
