What's the maximum # of voidable years they can add to a contract? 3, 5?
I actually don't know that there is any maximum, so thank you for giving me something I can try to learn today. But OTC notes the following:

Under the cap accounting rules of the CBA a signing bonus or an amount treated as a signing bonus is prorated on a straightline basis over the course of a contract up to a maximum of 5 years.

The Voidable Year and the Salary Cap

and, off the top of my head, I can't really think of any scenario where you'd need a void year beyond that 5 year limit.

Dak Prescott
Yeah, Sportrac has said the same thing (I did a quick look around after reading your post). I'll have to look into it.

  • 2025-2026 are void years for cap purposes
  • 2026 void year will allow the 2022 base salary to be restructured

Yeah, that's a smart idea to add voidable years beyond the 5th year if you know you'll be in cap trouble next year. Wonder if it'll become more common going forward to add on fake years to the end of big money contracts - gives teams the option (but not obligation) to clear space down the line if needed.

Lol Tampa will back to back fools is Barrett returns

The fact that the Bucs could pay 18 million or more for this guy is a huge mistake. He’s not an elite pass rusher. His numbers went down this year.

Ya but he’s an all pro next to Vae and Vae will be there

I get that people might think that Barrett's in line to be overpaid. I'm not even saying I agree/disagree until I see what the numbers turn out to be, and I'm certainly not ruling out the possibilty that the Bucs will miss out on better edge players that might be available for less if they hurry this deal. But:

  1. Even the greatest pass rushers in history have pass rushing numbers that fluctuate.
  2. In the regular season, Barrett's sack numbers with Vea were basically the same as his numbers without (3 in 5 and 5 in 10). The difference is basically nothing given the small sample size involved.
  3. In the playoffs, Barrett racked up 4 sacks, including 3 against Rodgers.

Shaq can also drop in coverage and set the edge in the run game. He is an every down player, not a specialist.

Yeah, if Watt was still on the market, I'd be much more to the side of "wait and see" than I am now, because I made the mistake of thinking that Watt really did want to play for a title contender (and it was likely that he was going to prefer a warm weather team). In that sense, I'm glad JJ jumped at the cash early.

Re-watching those games, it's incredible how much the Bucs players were being held by GB and KC.

Probably would have done a Leonard Marshall-Joe Montana against Mahomes if that line didn’t hold for most of the Super Bowl.

Yeah, and those fan bases were still whining about the officiating. They were basically complaining that a couple of arguably borderline calls were made when more obvious ones committed by their teams weren't.

To be fair to those fan bases, though, the guys in the booth were helping that along with their commentary (that I'm going to paraphrase). "OMG, that call was so late! (even though you acknowledge that it was obviously the right call, as the defender was using that receiver's shirt as if it were a Stretch Armstrong doll)", "I don't think that ball was catchable even when it was clearly no more than a stride out of reach, do you, Mr. former official guy who we hired to comment on this stuff and who's going to point out that it was just a 6 foot distance from the held WR?", and "They could have called that a hold on Tampa (even though the player only had one hand on a shoulder and didn't use the hand to influence the player's route on that bad pass by Mahomes) on that intercepted pass" were my 3 favorites.

Romo was terrible in the Super Bowl. I’m surprised he didn’t go down to the Chiefs sideline and bend over for Mahomes. All the excuses for him during that game but no mention that Mahomes was actually lucky he didn’t have another 3-4 interceptions.

"I know the Patriots are up 534 points, and I know there are only 10 seconds left, but if Mahomes can score a TD right here, the Chiefs aren't out of this thing!"

Dianna Russini was talking about Barrett this morning. According to her, the Bucs are doing multiple restructures, and are going to do everything they can to keep Barrett in town. I took what she was saying to mean that Barrett just has to not be ridiculous with his demands, and he'll be back.

The guy’s chirping a lil too much about wanting to get paid. Like if he’s had a von miller career. He’s had a two good years in tampa and this season his numbers went down vastly. There’s some decent 3-4 OLB in free agency for half of what he’s asking.

Sounds like they've already reached a # with Barrett and just trying to see how they can get it to work. Not sure how I feel about this. If his number is $18 then why not. If it's >$20, that's just too much.
