OT: Official 2020 Tompa Bay Gronkaneers Thread

I've said all year that Mahomes scares the bejesus out of me. Before talking about how the Bucs have their work cut out for them, let's just clarify that every team in the NFL, and bascially every modern NFL defense, would be looking at similar problems. Their ability to adapt is what makes them tough to stop, as they can destroy you with deep or west coast-style, short pass and huge chunk gains. It isn't even Mahomes arm strength that poses the biggest problem; it's his great understanding of risk:reward, how to buy time in the pocket, and his ability to consantly make the right reads in almost every situation. Couple that with his talent and crazy skill players he has, and you're just not going to look at a defense and say "yeah, that will play right into our hands."

There are a couple of things that may be advantageous to the Bucs, which is along the lines of what I said about the Saints and Packers. The Bucs don't rely on an elite cornerback and then fill in the rest of their secondary with JAGS. Because that is literally the worst matchup against the Chiefs. You saw yesterday how Tre'Davious White was owned by both Hill and Kelce; he couldn't match up with either one for entirely different reasons. And since he was completely owned, it made things even worse of the rest of the secondary.

Tampa does not have a great corner, but again, that might not be the worst thing. The reason I liked them against the Packers is because they have a handful of adequate corners, none of whom are really liabilities. Obviously the health of their two starting safeties will be key here, but they actually have pretty good depth there as well. They may be able to take minimal damage from selling out with schemes to slow down Kelce and Hill, much like how against the Saints (Thomas) and Packers (Adams) they didn't get absolutely gashed.

Mahomes did absolutely annihilate them mid-season, though, so I can't say I'm that optimistic. However, the Bucs will be returning Vea (huge) and now Fisher is out along with Schwartz; that's two really good tackles, and their line is in shambles. That will help.

I'm not sure how much shutting down the running game will help against the Chiefs. Obviously somewhat, but like the Patriots Dynasty 2.0, the idea of just going what works and throwing the ball all the time, mixing in the run as a changeup, is in play. Unlike the Saints (absolutely) and the Packers (quite a bit more than perception), the Chiefs do not rely on the run that much and setup the run through the passing game. They also have a great short passing game that acts a run game, which concerns me and is a big question mark of whether or not Tampa's swarming front 7 will be able to take advantage of that or if Reid will make them pay constantly for overpersuing (really concerned about that last point...KC is very good with misdirection plays.)

I just don't see any way they hold Kansas City to less than 24 points. It seems you can play a damn good defensive game against the Chiefs and pressure Mahomes pretty often, but the Chiefs are still going to gash you a bunch of times.

to me one of the biggest things in this game is drops. bucs can’t have 5+ drops in this game like the other 3 games. i don’t know if the weather in Washington and green bay made it worse or what

Its pretty ironic that the first home Super Bowl comes in a season with limited fans at the stadium

Nice and wholesome content. I think the entire forum will enjoy this. Nobody here, whatsoever, will hate it.

They adjusted in the second half. I’m off paternity leave and back to work today, so I don’t have the time I did before. But sometime before the game, I’ll look at the All-22 and see what they did differently in the second half. If they hold KC to 27 again, they win IMO. If it becomes a 35+ point shoot-out, they’ll take another L.

Do you think it was adjustment or KC pulling back the punches and going more conservative? It seems like teams often are close to beating KC or shutting down their offense, only to find that they're so far away when the Chiefs shift gears again.

Jesus H Christ

And if you count #1 seeds in Super Bowls, you can add the 00 Rams, 04 Eagles, and 14 Seahawks. Eight #1 seeds knocked off.

Also if you're talking intra-conference (which I assume they are here), "beating a #1 seed on the road" is a redundant statement, but don't let it interfere with awesomeness

That's almost ALWAYS the story with Rogers. Comebacks are not his thing.
To me that separates some of the greats. Guys like Brady, Manning, Mahomes. I would never count them out and if I was an opposing team I’d always be scared of them putting up 3-4 straight TDs. Don’t feel like any lead is safe against those guys.

Congratulations. I hope your nipples aren't sore. Lol

Kyler Murray made the pro bowl over Brady
You don't think this isn't giving Brady motivation? He just posted a video with Gronk walking and shrugging like they did in 2018, where "you're too old" was the chip.

Brees-Rodgers-Mahomes. Brady is 1 win away from one of, if not the greatest stretch of 3 wins in postseason history. 3 first ballot hall of famers.

It honestly does kind of sting to say this as a lifelong Patriots fan: if Tampa Bay wins, the 2020/21 campaign is the greatest season of Tom Brady's career. This would be a rare accomplishment in the sporting world that will age even better than its surreal nature in real-time. Dude is 43, new 7-9 team, Covid, no offseason, beating all of these all-time greats.

The huge silver lining for Brady (and what should be for Pats fans) is that a lot of the country has come around to liking him, recognizing his greatness, and that will ultimately lend more legitimacy and respect for the Patriots when it's all over. It makes it even more eye-roll worthy, for casual fans too, when someone tries to cast doubt on the Patriots success.

I doubt the bucs will punt 4 straight times in the first half and spot them 17 points to start the game. Different Bucs offense. If brady has time they will do things against that secondary.

Wow. Kellerman says Rodgers choked! LOL
