OT: NBA coach Billups caught in Mafia and sports gambling sting (LINK)

Wouldn't you love to know the whole story behind that? Amazing.

One of my neighbors had a gambling problem and owed so much that his mother sold her home to give him the money. He then used some of that to make an in-law apartment for her. I remember talking to their young son about it and he said that he wasn't into gambling. A few minutes later I heard him talking about the spread in a game with another person at the party.

Eventually, his wife ended up in a hospital and her husband took the kid after accusing her of child abandonment. Him and his son moved to Florida and I never heard from them again.
Wow! That's a crazy story! I've heard of some crazy things people have done over gambling . But that takes the cake there. Wow

How many refs are required for the games? 21 is pretty short.

I don't know how committed the owners were to it then, but if the officials spent the off-season watching videos of how plays should be called then they'd have to become better and more consistent. It's called training and it works in all jobs, hard or not.

Whatever they're doing clearly isn't working and the officiating is worse now than ever.
The problem isn't the rules, it's the game speed. You can only fix that aspect by giving the refs more tools to review and get it right, and there is a point where the fans and league don't want to stop every play.

Officiating is no better or worse. Years ago we didn't have replay and slow motion that would tell you everytime something was wrong. Now we do.

A full-time sky judge at every game with access to all the video and in communication with the other officials would do wonders.

Note they've now finally given coaches access to the same videos that the replay officials have - that's why challenge success rate has improved this year. Used to be they had to wait for the TV broadcast that often didn't show the best angle.

One really wonders how far this is going to expand into other sports...

A purported victim of a Texas jeweler linked to the NBA cheating ring says he and his poker buddies were scammed out of nearly $1 million in a single night — but that the fraudsters used an ex-NFL player, not a basketball star, as their front man.

No, they're not as entertaining. I'd watch the WNBA if women were getting put on a poster and getting dunked on and there were high scoring games. I'm not watching a 70 to 64 game of layups.

Do you have a daughter in the WNBA or something? It sucks. Objectively. Not even an opinion. It is fact that it sucks
I watch women's basketball and women's soccer.

It's a good watch.

A lot of great passing, good cutting, much more like the men's college game, which is a superior form of basketball anyway.

Kevin Garnett linked. Unclear precisely how. Torre seems to think it is little more than the notion that he showed up at one event and quickly left, and he wasn't involving in suckering people in.

Cs never should've retired his number anyway.

They pretend they're not? Name one who believes otherwise.

As for people caring about them, check out NCAA attendance at women's games. It's pretty good. The tourney makes a ton of money.

So what? Lotta ****ing compliant little m-m-morons on college campuses now.

This news puts added pressure on the NFL to improve their officiating. They do not want accusations of match-fixing dominating the news on Mondays.

Wouldn't be hard for them to improve. Full-time paid referees instead of amateurs, and more active intervention from the sky judge for non-calls as well as calls.

The full-time zebras would still be in the bag for the Queefs just as deep as the part-time ones already are.

Women's soccer? Seriously?!?

Reminds me of a Sam Kinison skit...

Listening to Kash Patel has me thinking that there are more indictments coming. The problem the FBI will have came up in that article. Some people won't want to come forward.

I haven't gambled this season but last year I decided to try several times on parlays. Came out even or a little on the hole, maybe $50, but I wasnt betting more than$10 on each interaction.

I'm lucky though that I can stop and have limits. I think we all have a friend who texts us when they win big on fanduel in week 5 but then you don't hear anything on the subsequent weeks.... hmm what happened there?

Outside of lottery 40 to 50 bucks.. I never been a gambling person myself. Also with the state of destruction the US economy is in especially for working class people I couldn't stand to gamble and throw away food for my family. For guys like billips and rozier.. who have made 10s of millions of dollars it's inconceivable to me to see what exactly was the gain. They aren't getting 10 or 20 million dollar payouts.. just odd.

College campuses?

What are you talking about?

You think it's students filling those arenas and getting high ratings on TV?

I’m curious what the total betting handle was on Goff first TD in that Chiefs game. The league reviewing that play for a penalty violating its own rules and then telling the refs to throw a flag looks dirty AF. Who knows what other communications the league had during that minute delay.

I'd imagine Goff would have low bets as a first TD scorer and that more money would be on Gibbs or St. Brown.

This gambling scandal does not surprise me at all, always thought since all major sports embraced these online gambling sites, it was not if but when.
Every time I see a sponsor like Draft Kings or other online sport book it makes me think that those once revered guardrails no longer exist. The NFL and all other major sports have allowed gambling a seat at their proverbial table.

This. 100%. Population data out of Europe looking at sports gambling apps puts the problematic gambling percentage on par with slot machines. Really bad stuff
