OT: McNabb-"Black QBs get criticized more than White QBs"

Wow-surprised I haven't seen much of this in many of the MBs today-he said this in an interview with Bryant Gumbel.

Maybe by Rush Limbaugh, but that simply is not true when it comes to criticism from people who are actually making an attempt at sense. Maybe it was true when McNabb was a rookie, maybe when Vick entered the league, but I think black QBs are more popular than white receivers. Granted Culpepper, McNair, McNabb, Young and Vick rely a lot more on their athleticism than other QBs and that brings up valid questions, but a QB like Campbell isn't going to have as many question marks surrounding his abilities because he's a passing QB and a better one at that.

actually nowadays i think that maybe they get critisized less.

maybe cause there are fewer of them , it may seem more. white Qbs get dumped on everyday but they dont think it is cause they are white.

i do however think that in many peoples minds ..that they are more doubting of them. crap like a qb should be white! but they dont critisize them cause they are wary of the prejudice.

a good Qb is good whether white of black.

me personally i am wary of white rb's, for me to accept that they are good they much do much more in my mind.

Bryant Gumbel, the man who lives for the race card. He's got his gorgeous white wife, so don't know what his complaint is. Spoiled brat syndrome comes to mind.

I couldn't disagree more with McNabb's statement. Hell, is any high profile QB criticized more than Rex Grossman? And there's a reason for that. He's lousy. And I believe that he would receive equal doses of criticism regardless of color.

Limbaugh was critical of the media, not McNabb. In fact he said that McNabb was a very good QB just not elite. Which I think is a very accurate statement. And McNabb pulling the race card here is so inappropriate it is an embarrassment to the league.

Mcnabb may have a valid point if he said he feels he has taken some unwarranted criticism in Philadelphia over his career.

To say it is race based and that white QBs get criticized less than he does? I just don't see that.

He's looking in the wrong place for subtle racism.

QBs of low athleticism who outperform their athletic ability are typically questioned less than the highly athletic ones who might get by on athleticism and not be so good at decision-making.

Black QBs are on average more athletic than white QBs.

The real place to look for racism, IMO, is at the shortage of smart but relatively unathletic black QBs. If Tom Brady were black, and lacked both speed and strength, would he have been given the chance to succeed and grow into what he is today? And for that matter, if he grew up in a poor family that couldn't afford a personal trainer when he was 10 years old, would he have been able to grow into a pro athlete?

I don't think there's much racism left in judging blacks who are at or near the pinnacle of athletic success. If any big problems remain, they're at points further down the food chain.

Leftwitch is about as athletic as Brady and he was a 1st round pick and given, 4 years (?) of opportunity.

Matt Jones is extremely athletic and probably no worse a passer than Vick and he was never given a opportunity to play QB.

My point is that you will find whatever it is you are looking for. Whether it be equality or racism.

I wonder how McBarf explains the constant slurping of Jason Campbell of the Redskins you would think he was putting up mvp numbers and he has a low completion % 1 td and 3 ints on the season. Everyone who has commented on the game has given him a reach a round.

On a case by case basis I'd agree with him. IMO, people didn't criticize Vick enough. But I thought Leftwich received more guff than a similar QB of his ability should have.

Particularly, with a good young prospect breathing down his neck. He's in the professional struggle of his life. One which I think he'll lose. His chance has come and gone.

McNabb was drafted 2nd overall and was the toast of the town for years in Philly. He made millions as the star of huge national ad campaigns. This is the wrong guy to be claiming a lack of support and opportunity. (The right guy is the smart young black athlete whose HS coach looks at him and never pauses to think "QB.")

McNabb might not be the biggest racist in this league, but he is surely the most vocal racist in the league.

I realized long ago that racism is a two way street. And McNabb lives on that road.

Sure, Limbaugh pissed him off and all, but McNabb clearly is not capable of being the better man. McNabb is not even slightly better than Rush in terms of race credibility at this point.

I have my eye on two quarterbacks of the future, Campbell, who has potential. And Troy Smith, who I really believe will be the first great athletic QB we have seen since Warren Moon.

Troy Smith knows how to play the game in a way that still seems to elude McNabb. I really believe that he will be the Raven's best QB. McNair took years to stop scrambling around and start playing the position. I will take Troy Smith over the best of Steve McNair any day.

The problem with McNabb has NEVER been the color of his skin. The problem is that he is thin skinned. Instead of advancing race relations, he seems content to sling mud at the other guy. Oh, and collect royalties from the whiteys that run Cambell Soup.

Rush's entire point was valid, when taken at face value. The media was portraying McNabb as an elite QB, when at the time, he hadn't earned it. Whether or not it was based on his race, who knows? It could've been because he's a good guy. That was, however, another Sports Media related furor over something that wasn't nearly as objectionable as it was portrayed.

Rush was an easy target (insert joke here). He was easily "Borked" off of ESPN, who caved like a house of cards when he achieved exactly the type of attention that they hired him for. For many of the same reasons, BB has been their target this week. They are now attempting to Nixonify BB. Limbaugh and Belichick are both not "one of them", nor do they wish to be. They have virtually no use for them or their uneducated (as Rush and BB see them) opinions. Their success is not related to engendering themselves to the media. They exist and succeed completely outside their dominion, and for that, they must pay.

The media never are held accountable for their completely knee-jerk reactionary posturing. Oh, they can moralize with the best of them, waxing indignant of numerous indiscretions, large and small, knowing full well that their own skeletons are securely stowed away, tidily out of view. Good work if you can get it.

Rush said that the media tends to overrate black QBs because they want to see them succeed.

As to McNabb's statement, he really isn't handling his decline very well. First he pops off on the drafting of Kolb, now this.

But he is not the same player, I think he is too big sometimes. He lost all of his speed, which gave him the ability to make plays.

Isn't it amazing that a guy like Braynt Gumbel, who is married to a white women, belongs to a very restricted country club in Westchester, and has made numerous comments that if he was white, would have cost him his career, starts all these race baiting comments.

He's taken too many shots to the head. After the Limbaugh incident no talking head that wants to keep his job would dare criticize a black QB.
