OT: Jets coach on sidelines trips opposing player

Re: Trip-Gate

Personally, I just don't see this as that big a deal. He wasn't trying to injure anyone, he was just cheating a little to help his team. I don't understand why everyone's jumping all over the guy about this. Who hasn't thought about doing something like that if you're in position to?

Yes, he was wrong and should be punished but it's just not as serious a crime as people are making it out to be.

If Carroll had torn an ACL, would you still think this way? It didn't happen, but it definitely had the potential to happen.

Isn't that what we all thought about Cameragate?

I'm starting to think Jets coached this:
Yeah that's starting to make a lot of sense. It's like something I saw on the ESPN 30-for-30 "Pony Excess" - once you pay a player, you can't cut him loose or he'll turn you in (and that is pretty much what happened at SMU). Here the Jets can't hang Alosi out to dry or he'll turn on them.

Bullcrap. That contact-to-knee hit could easily have been a career ender. Reminded me of Ulf Samuelsson's hit on Cam Neely. Neely came back and even had some great years, but his career was never the same after that hit.

Humans do stupid things sometimes. Its called being Human. This doesn't mean he is a bad guy. He just wasn't thinking and I'm sure he didn't want to hurt him because if he did, he'll be hurting himself too.
No one would really do such a thing on purpose because you WILL be caught on camera.

Re: Trip-Gate

At the very least, they were purposefully deployed there as an obstacle and 1 guy just got a little over zealous. At worst, the trip was premeditated by the entire group.
+1 +1 +1 +1. I say it 1,000 times: +1. I think you nailed it right on the head right there and you pretty summed up in two short sentences the words I couldn't find all afternoon.

I believe they were stationed there because they are permitted to and didn't want Carroll to keep running out of bounds. The trip was just a foolish decision.

I was just out in the car and tuned into Felger & Mazz for the first time a long time. Between repeating the same things they kept repeating when I last listened months ago ("if the Jets are so bad, how come they've beat you 2 out of 4 times?"), they had some interesting points on this.

First, they're clear that putting the Dolphins' guy's health in danger that way was wrong. But they also talked about sideline gamesmanship, how you don't give the opponent free run on your own sideline. Felger says there's a play from '03, the playoff game with Indy, where Harrison goes out of bounds after a pick. Felger says you can see Belichick, hands still in pockets, step in between Marvin and the field, then keep shifting to block him. Now THAT is pretty funny.

Re: Trip-Gate

*caught cheating and sucking

How are you caught when everybody already knows they suck!

In that case it should be 'New York Jets*'

not a peep out of Jetdell yet...as if this wasn't expected

I am not concerned about that.

Along with this issue he has a homeless football team. And while they have a spot for tonight, he also has to find them a home for next week. Getting ready for tonight and getting a place for next week has to be a higher priority for the league today than this.

Also what I would like the league to do is view tapes of past Jets games to see if this may have occurred in the past and gone unnoticed before they make a statement. If this is not the first time, it refutes the "he acted alone out of stupidity" claim. Viewing the tapes will take time.

Hey, I can understand a little sideline gamesmanship. But a little obstructionism is far cry from deliberately hitting a defenseless player in what could easily have been a career ending injury.

You realize he has publicly apologized for deliberately hitting a defenseless player ... right?

Absolutely. To be clear, they weren't defending the Jets guy; just the opposite. I just thought it was an interesting discussion. The story did help explain one reason the Jets personnel would be lined up like they were. And the mental image of Belichick shifting to block Harrison is pretty funny.

Yes, I saw the public comments. Nothing he says in a press conference today changes the fact that could have ended a player's career with his deliberate cheap shot yesterday.

I just finished going through another Jets game I had and there was no line like this at all.

It is perfectly obvious that the recognized that this pfin kept going out of bounds and they were told by higher-ups to get in line there and get in the way if they could. This goes higher up and this guy is willing to take a dive 2x. You will see before I said this was no big deal but I have now changed my mind as this is obviously a downward directed strategy from the Jets management not just a guy caught up in the moment as I had thought.

Hey let's try to look at the positives on this from the Jets side.

At least their S&C coach walks the walk when it comes to strength. That was a 250# pro football player coming at him full speed and he tilts his knee into him while he's at a full gallop and he didn't even so much as flinch when the contact was made. The dude has to have legs of steel. :singing:

He's still a POS, but a strong one at that. :rocker:

Makes sense. Sounds in line with what Billick is being quoted as saying on the other thread on the subject, about there being more to this.

Oh sorry my mistake. I misread you and thought you were saying it wasn't deliberate.

It's all cool I thought you were saying the fact that he apologized meant he shouldn't be severly punished. Glad we're on the same page! :rocker: :rocker:

WEEI reporting he has been suspended for the remainder of the season and fined $25K.
