OT: Goff gets paid

This is one of the reasons I was on board with Drake Maye at 3, rather than trading down and taking someone like McCarthy, Nix, or Rattler (later on). I think it's worth it to take the big swing at QB, because you don't want to get stuck in that no man's land: Where you can't get rid of the QB without regressing as a team to the point that the decision makers probably get fired, but you can't really consistently WIN with that QB either. I'd rather they take a chance on the high upside of Maye, and if he fails oh well, you try again. If he succeeds, you have a legit face of the franchise. No half measures at QB.

Yup, gotta go for the ceiling. And if it fails, youre most likely just missing out on some participation trophies at best.

He’s top 10 in the same way I’d be a top ten stud good looking guy at the old folk’s home.

Only reason he’s top ten - I ageee with you that he is - is because of the putrid play of QBs during the last few seasons.
And his team has won. W-L record of A QB also plays a huge factor at the negotiating table. Is why Purdy is about to get paid as well. He's not a WOW factor type of QB.. he's steady, eddy and his team wins. Same for Goff.

I agree with you, and was happy that team drafted Maye
but the Lions went a different route and it appears to be working.
could the Pats have drafted traded down, got their stud LT, 2 stud WR's and a #1 next year, along with a player?
with AVP in the fold, and that influx of talent, was mac worth another shot? still draft Milton to develop (or Rattler) and make a play for Dak next year (or whomever next years Goff may be)

Lions have looked good, but I'm always wary of teams that seem to be trending upwards but haven't won anything yet. One NFCCG is nice, but they have to prove they can nail those draft picks again and again and again. Because what happens if they have a few off drafts? Is Jared Goff good enough to keep the team competitive without that influx of talent? He might be, but it's still very much in the air. Sustaining success is a different challenge to building it.

I think regardless of whether we traded down for a couple extra picks, if we draft well the next few years (including this years draft) and qb works out we’ll be in very good shape. Sure the extra picks would help but The way the league is set up the lower level teams like us have plenty of quality draft capital even without needing to accumulate. I think it was a wise move to take your swing at 3 and now you can explore trade down options. We actually did that later in the draft and ended up with javon baker from a small trade down. Next year if we end up top 5 and theres a few real coveted players that could net us a solid bag i may lean towards a trade down now that we have our qb prospect

Value or not, I just can't read these numbers without it changing my breathing a little. Never lose the WTF about these salaries!
Why are salaries rising so fast? Normally I don't care but they're in a rapid ascent.

because the league is making money hand over fist.. every new tv deal ups the players cut. playoff game on peacock? players get paid.

each generation of players is going to dwarf the previous generations pay.

guys like marino made 51 million over 17 years in the NFL.
Goff is going to make that in ONE year.

The QB salaries were reset originally by dak, then mahomes, Jackson, burrow for example.. now Goff gets to benefit from the QB market reset. Imagine when it's time to pay Drake!
