I do agree with you - he's had a few all-arm throws that worked in college and a few times in his rookie year, but I think he started to realize late last year what he can/can't get away with from that standpoint. He routinely throws off his back foot regardless of sore ankles.
Still - you're talking about one throw, they're few and far between. Honestly, this one aspect of his game is one reason why I've given him the benefit of the doubt. He's at least not a guy who forces the football in bad situations. When you don't have the arm talent or the athletic talent of other elite guys, it's the little things that you have to do to make up for that and this has at least been a fairly big positive for him.Last season vs the Jets, Jones threw the ball directly to a Jet player for a pic 6 that was luckily called back because of Roughing the passer.
The next question is then obviously can he do the rest to at least make up for it? He had enough moments in the final few games to make me think that with a competent coordinator, the potential is there. As we've said, we still need to see it.
That one's more complicated. You don't generally fire a coach until players stop buying in and you see them lose games where it looks like they've got no shot. The lack of buy in/effort is usually what does a coach in, especially if guys don't look prepared. At the same time, how he handles the situation will likely be scrutinized and I'm sure that could potentially play a factor.Just might decide BBs future.
I don't think it was that. I think he realized that this wasn't like 2001. Mac isn't Bledsoe. I love Drew, but he made some bad decisions and I also feel like, if I recall, he wasn't fitting what Weis wanted to do back then and don't forget, he was coming off a 5-11 season where he absolutely didn't play well. Jones had at least earned a little currency. The lack of public support and hanging him out to dry was a bad look, and it angered guys in the locker room. You can't do that.BB is stubborn and succumbed to last seasons pressure of the NE QB controversy from the Boston media.
You also can't bury a kid who had a couple of bad games (he played relatively well against Miami, O.K. against Pittsburgh, and then decent against the Ravens barring a few throws) yet won 10 games the year before and was in the building every day over the offseason doing the right things. Drew was a veteran who was stuck in his ways and - as much as I love him - wasn't as hard of a worker. The guy had a helicopter if I recall standing by at the stadium at the final game one year to immediately bolt to Montana, and I don't recall hearing him ever hanging around the facility in March.
I think that's how all of us feel. Yet you also have to take into account that Jones knows he's under pressure this year. He came into last year feeling relatively good about himself and things in general. Unfortunately, now that he's in the NFL, that feeling never lasts long and it's probably safe to say last year was definitely a wake up call in that regard. My worst nightmare is a repeat of 2022.
We all just have to let it play out and see how it goes.
