I’m sure there are racist people on this board just like there are everywhere but I don’t understand how using the term thug has anything to do with racism. And as you say the comments I see on this thread appear to be the kind of jokes people would make without any regard to or knowledge of race.

The term "thug" (in mine and many others' anecdotal experience) is disproportionately used to described criminals who happen to be p.o.c. and/or low in socioeconomic status.

The black guy or the poor white guy covered in tattoos who stole diapers for an infant child are "thugs". A well-off father who beats his wife and kids but makes $90,000 yearly and appears put-together to the naked eye is not referred to as a "thug".

It's a selectively applied term with a meaning and implication that goes beyond describing anyone who's a criminal.

And yet for most people of my acquaintance a thug is someone who is not just prone to violence or violent criminal behavior but who enjoys it and wouldn't apply to someone who stole diapers unless they happened to beat up the clerk for entertainment in the process. It has nothing to do with color or income strata unless it is being used in the context of thug life which has a very different meaning than the average soccer mom might think.

Okay, but in that case one is assuming the intent of the criminal which is often difficult to determine, especially in the immediate aftermath of a crime prior to any form of investigation. Yet newscasters loosely toss around the term "thug" immediately following criminal acts without knowing intent.

I understand and appreciate your perspective and think it has value but I'm not so sure the majority of people understand the term in the same way. I could be wrong, of course; I wonder the extent of generational effects on one's understanding of the term.

Interesting discussion but probably one best saved for another time given the topic of the thread. Apologies for lowkey hijacking the thread!

I completely disagree.
A thug is generally accepted to be a criminal who physically harms people.

Stealing diapers does not make a thug unless they beat up a woman to steal hers on her way home from the store.
A father who beats his wife and kids is a thug to people know he is doing it.

You are putting your own prejudice into this discussion and pretending that others think the way you do.

Gotta interject that I like this thread.
Especially the last 2 pages. Love the give-and-take on race.
I usually only like threads that are either straight-up football( we get some great ones of those- love the x's and o's) or straight-up comedy.
But this one gets people thinking. That's a good thing. Kudos to a lot of you.
As for the attempts at humor: I agree with the 2 greatest standup comedians of all time- Richard Pryor and George Carlin- PCness destroys comedy.
If your heart's in the right place and not coming from some form of hate, then do your thing- there's no sacred cows- including ALL y'all's Mamas.
Uhoh.

BTW...whaddya call 6 Fnords in a circle? Space Station Stumblebum....

It’s funny how the first part of this thread someone might have implied that people were being racist when they were making jokes, and later apologized for it because he probably misinterpreted something or maybe just didn’t explain his point well enough, and people were all very kind to each other.

Then this guy comes along and is like “oh those jokes weren’t racist at all. You want to see something racist?? I’ll just leave this right here”.

The anthem kneelers will ignore yet another dead body in their midst if it doesn't fit their criteria.

On an entirely serious note, of course I'm interjecting my opinion into the discussion. That's the only way to have a discussion about anything that isn't entirely objective and empirical in nature. If you want to call it "prejudice", so be it, but it's simply opinion and interpretation.

On a more humorous note, AJ accusing and criticizing someone else for projecting their beliefs onto others and having strongly formed opinions is akin to the pot screaming at the kettle for being black. At least I'm aware of the subjective nature and limited scope of my thoughts and feelings (sorry, "prejudice") in these discussions.

I agree with your original post, though it's important to word sentiments like that carefully so as to not suggest that all people who use the term "thug" are using it in such a manner. Not saying that you did outright accuse anyone of that, but you know what I mean.

gee whiz..I sure hope I'm not being too racially insensitive when I put forth the proposition that "thugs" may actually be scurrilous indivuals indeed...

I concur on Pryor and Carlin being the 2 greatest stand-ups of all time and therefore congratulate you on your exceptionally keen judge of comedic talent. I know most of their stuff cold and yet it still cracks me up when I hear it, their jete has stood the test of time. However as a Masshole I have to take exception to that "All y'all's Mamas" stuff. This is New England Patriots country where the only acceptable yawl is a sailing vessel. Make up your mind man are you calling everyone else's mother a cow or a boat? I say everyone else's because mine was neither bovine nor mizzen rigged, that woman was a jete'n saint yah bahstid.

I want to be very clear on this as I won't take any credit I don't deserve. Anything you may have misinterpreted as kindness on my part was purely an attempt to curry favor with and be understood by Patjew. His God does not jete around and it does not pay to jete with His people. As for that Klan guy yeah, I'd say he laid down the racist line plain as day then came back and burnt a cross over it just to make sure everyone saw it. And hearkening back to the previous post many of us recall what Pryor said about fire being inspirational...

You didn't even quote him, what's more passive aggressive than that?

I called'm out by name. It doesn't get less passive-aggressive than that.

You should seriously consider a brain transplant.

The one you got...it ain't cuttin' it.

I'm as New England as anybody here. My Dad's a direct descendant of John Alden and my Mom's parents are from County Cork,Ireland.
I grew up on the mean streets of Dorchester and JP(back when those streets WERE mean), but also on The Cape.
But since I've lived in the South since '92, I gotta inject a little bit of Dixie here and there. But make no mistake- I'm pure, 100% Boston, proud as hell about it- and that will never change. Y'all.

All well and good. I'm a Townie born n raised, note I say nothing about having grown up at all and my wife will tell anyone that will listen I have steadfastly refused to. In your heart of JP hearts you know damn right well what a yawl is and isn't, just sayin...

I've known some wicked pissah Townies.
Also done my share of sailin' but never on a yawl.

I read somewhere that his brother’s being charged with manslaughter but yet police said he was strangled. Someone help me out here on why he’s getting a manslaughter charge.

Ok now i am seeing that they where drinking and he killed him. So he was drunk when he killed him?

You threw a racist blanket over a word. A word that describes behavior.

Happens all the time. One minute you’re drinking with your homie, the next minute you’re getting strangled.

Where has anybody called a guy stealing diapers for a kid a Thug? Police have paid for the diapers and let the person who stole them off any charges. Plenty of people grow up poor and do not steal because they do not use poverty as an excuse to do wrong.
