OT: Cut Down Day

You just have to feel for some of these kids. Sure some of them probably will get a shot elsewhere, some on them may be signed to the practice squad, but going from 80 to 53, that a lot of players, for 30+ teams.

For a lot of these guys they were probably stand-outs on other fields.

I wish all the cut players luck in where ever they go. You are talking, what 1% that make it to the NFL. That is some slim margin there.

On the other side you have head coaches who send out people to tap these kids on the sholder and tell them to bring their playbook. I get it is a production and cut-throat business but you have to think this is the least favorite part of their job. Hell I can see Vermeil on his hands and knees in tears with this kids on days like today/tmr.

The league is a good league, these kids put in a lot of effort, as many of us do in our regular jobs. Either way, I hope they make out ok, whether they make it to the practice squad, on other teams, or elsewhere.

I feel bad for them but that is tempered by the fact that I would give up various parts of my body to have even played in 1 preseason game with the New England Patriots.

There will be some cuts that will definately make it onto other teams and another 250 or so that make it to PS's......a few more will be on speed dial and only an injury away from being back in the NFL....

The number of players also points out that the talent is there for a viable "minor" league that could play a high quality game, somewhere above college and just below the NFL. I wonder if the fact that the NFL doesn't finance that kind of NFL Europe league here in the US is less about making it pay and more about protecting there current relationship with college football

The guy that goes and gets the players and tells them, "the coach wants to see you and bring your playbook" is called "THE TURK" BB had this job back when he was a kid with the Colts.........

The "Turk" is coming today for alot of guys........

I don't think that a minor league composed of the cuts and marginal practice squad players could play a game that is significantly superior to SEC or the Big 10. The top teams in those conferences are producing several top 60 picks per year so their top end talent is significantly higher than the CUT League top-end talent and the average talent difference between an unsuccessful UDFA and a decent big conference college starter is real but not massive.

I might argue that the talent gap is bigger than one might realize.

But either way I would still think there could be a market for additional football in this country. Certainly wouldnt be the cash cow that College and the Pros are but if you strategically put these minor league teams in areas where there is no Pro or Major college in the area you could probably make some money.
But more then the money the NFL could offer a pro product to more people and cheaper (which is a big issue amung fans at the pro level). While simaltaneously having a developemental league that in theory should help the product in the NFL by allowing players to continue to develope that may otherwise have been cut without getting a second look in the future because they had nowhere to go play.

I think the interesting thing here would be how to set it up do you affiliate with pro teams or do you just have a seperate league with a pool of players available to all.

I don't think it would be a high quality game and the cost of fielding teams would be difficult to even recoup. We're talking about a violent, physical game where life altering (cumulative) injuries are often the norm. That's hard enough to account for when the players in question are all making at least low to mid six figures for their efforts. I don't think I'd want to support a league where guys could hang around for mid five to low six figures for several years until their bodies start to give out or their brains withstand enough to be addled heading into their late 20's... And it never works as a feeder system because to do so you would have to field 32 of these minor league teams...

Between NFL practice squads and the CFL and Arena football if a guy isn't playing after failing to stick on a roster he probably should be finding a better way to use his education. Believe me, if today's NFL thought there was money to be made they would be all over the concept. Interest in their product is already at saturation level nationally, yet there are franchises who will continue to face blackouts. The NFLE experiment brought them little more than a fringe foothold for the product in the European market. That foothold already exists here coast to coast, but it's appetite is for the real deal or the college game (and in some areas even the HS game).

There is a reason the UFL or any other attempt at an expansion league can't get off the ground nowadays. Why?

Playing time isn't the same thing as an expanded roster. (Although an 18 game schedule would bring an expanded roster).

A shared team means that there aren't 32 farm teams with each franchise stocking 40-50 players.

For example, let's say 8 teams with 4 teams each contributing 10-12 players or a combination of stocking and independent players depending on how many teams would be needed.

With NFLN, this would provide content.

Besides, "sellouts" are not the point. It's a question of facilities, overhead and salaries. NFL Europe didn't work because the Europeans are not football fans and knew it was an inferior product. Outside of NFL Europe, I am not aware of any attempt by the league, for this type of initiative.
