Re: Osi Umenyiora can be had for a Mid Round Pick

I actually think we are moving to the 4-3 this year. Makes it much easier for us.

Per a Reiss mailbag:

Reiss made a good point in one of his mailbags refering to the unlikely switch to 4-3. His point was simple: in talking to players who met with Patriot scouts he was a getting a distinct 3-4 feel. As in the scouts were still looking for 3-4 talent and the players were speaking of being asked 3-4 questions when meeting with the team.

His point was simple. If the team is switching to 4-3 than wouldn't they scout and ask question for 4-3.

i agree with this statement for all intensive purposes

I believe the phrase is "for all intents and purposes".

The Burgess trade was a good idea that didn't work out. That happens. If Burgess played last season as well as it was expected he could/would, it would have been a fine trade.
There is absolutely a position on our team for a pass rushing DE who doesn't really have a spot in the 3-4 base. It gets them as much PT as Wilfork, as one of the starting LBs, as one of the 34 DEs, and as the nickel corner, all of which play about half the snaps. Its a 'starter' even though he doesnt have a spot in the base D.
Just because the results of the Burgess trade were uninspiring doesnt mean the intent of the trade was wrong. I dont know if Osi will be any more effective in the role than Burgess was/will be, but the idea is sound, the question is whether its the correct player.

I'm not so sure that everybody absolutely agreed that giving up a 3rd and 5th Round pick for a player coming off a 24 Total Tackle/3.5 Sack season was anything close to a good idea.

I absolutely agree.

That trade was horrible - Horrible - from the microsecond it was made. Thank Ganja that Skippy gave us a 5th-rounder for LeKevin Smith (sorry Keegs); otherwise, we would be looking at ZERO draft picks in the 3rd, 4th & 5th rounds in one of the deeper drafts of the decade.

Osi would pretty much be a more expensive version of Burgess. No, thank you.
He is only owed $10.1 million over the next three years, so it's not like trading for Osi would break the bank. My main concern with him would be whether he can set the edge. I wonder if he could use his leverage better as a stand-up OLB rather than a 4-3 DE.

Trading for a player to fill the role Burgess was going to fill was a good idea. That player being Burgess was the poor part, but if he played as was expected, it would have been a good trade, because it would have filled a glaring need. But I already said all of that, feel free to misrepresent my point further...
