There has been a smattering of discussion about McDaniels putting all sorts of weird **** on tape the last month or so, even yesterday, we saw the off-tackle flea flicker make its long-awaited return (shoutout James White) - and we even saw the wildcat with Stevenson where he scored (against Miami, warmed the ****les of my cold, dead heart to see that one)

What I want to talk about in this thread is something that was really, really strange, and not something you'd expect to see on a team without a DC.

That was not just the rotation of the defensive line with (almost) everyone healthy, but where they were playing.

Christian Barmore spent the 2nd quarter as a 7/9-tech right defensive end. Pass rushing. Did pretty well too, although he didn't seal one edge where they gave up a big run.

Also saw Perpetual Late-Bloomer Anfernee Jennings playing some DT again, and the Practice Squad Crew playing all the positions up and down the line.

What are they cooking? Are they cooking something? Maybe it's Williams who gets some run outside in the playoffs, not necessarily Barmore?

I'd love to hear actual thoughts, surely it wasn't just me who saw this.

I am not a X/O kinda guy, and Lazar definitely seems to know more about offense than defense, but he does have quite a bit of info here on the D for the game. Something that stood out was

"- DT Christian Barmore was freed up some by Williams' return, registering a sack when he got a 1-on-1 matchup with the line sliding toward Williams in the rush. Barmore also logged a pressure on a screen drop-back, another QB hit, and a run stuff, but he did lose contain as the backside end on a bootleg scramble that gained nine yards.

- DT Cory Durden was back in a more complementary role playing alongside Barmore and Williams, and was unlocked a bit as a result. Durden beat Dolphins LG Jonah Savaiinaea for a third-and-1 stop and had another run stuff on the goal line, beating single blocks in both instances. When he's not getting double-teamed, Durden has good anticipation and the ability to slip blocks in the run game to make plays on the other side of the line of scrimmage."

Did the staff see something in Durden while Milton was out that's giving them more flexibility when the line is fully healthy?

tbh, i didn't notice this in the game...

just supposition, but i think they were using the players along the line to get different looks to see if out of position players can be used in different scenarios. to see if it adds a pop to the dl... it provides tape to the different looks in in-game situations vs practice...

We’ve seen this before in the past going as far back as Seymour and Wilfork. Patrick Paul is the Dolphins best offensive lineman, so the coaches put our biggest baddest DT across from him. Pretty simple. They also ran was appeared to be a lot of 3 DT fronts, not surprising… the Dolphins are one of the best rushing teams in the NFL. The Dolphins run game was stuck in the mud yesterday… smart.

I noticed the same as far as running different combos /rotations on the DL. After rewatching I was moderately impressed with Eric Gregory, dude seems very strong and fought through double teams quite a few times on run plays.

I think McDaniels has an epic **** ton of **** of stuff still in the playbook that he can and will unleash. Defensively as well. Williams unlocks that line and it's great to have him back for sure.

The mystery and unknown of the title baited us and we took it hook, line, and sinker

No, it doesn't work that way. The problem is people get angry, fly into a rage and commit acts of depravity when they feel precious life minutes are being wasted. It just is not worth it.

Nah, you posted in it - worked just fine.

Depends on whether your goal is cheap clicks or meaningful engagement/exchange of ideas.

I’ve seen Barmore playing over the T in many games. I think they like that matchup in run D vs teams that run wide.

Man, you guys quickly dragged this thread south!
And there ain't a goddamn thing anybody can do about it
You know why? Because we've got the bomb, that's why!

It’s a Dennis Leary song.

Which was this? lol.

More importantly, why are we letting it drown out football? This is a particularly good time to be focused on that!
