They HAVE to keep Bolden now as a RB option. Look at tonight JJTaylor looked great running the ball from scrimmage, but the way he runs I don't expect a long or healthy career., You need to have more. James White isn't the answer from scrimmage, so he they need to have 4 guys.

BTW- is it legal for say Bolden or Hoyer, get to the PS, but with their full pay? I don't see anyone claiming either, so other than ego, it wouldn't matter a bit if they were on the PS or the roster. But both would be available should an injury happen at those two position. Just askin'
I have great respect for your NFL acumen Ken, but...(here it comes)...I believe you are dead wrong about Taylor. He possesses good hands, good route awareness, runs hard inside AND outside, tucks the ball away with two hands more smoothly and effectively than any other RB on this team. Health??? You DO remember Darren Sproles, do you not? This kid, Taylor is more versatile than any RB on this team and a LOCK for the 4th RB position. IMO you don't keep an inferior RB just to sure up special teams. I think Bolden is on the bubble.

Was on a road trip during the game so tried to listen to the game on SiriusXM. The Pats radio team (Zo & Bob) are horrible, in no way could you follow what was happening in the game. Never told basic stuff such as down, distance, field position, who was on the field, etc. They acted like two guys drinking beer, watching the game on TV and commenting on plays (nice catch, he should have had it.....). New England deserves better. I switched to the Giants broadcast to at least be able to follow the action (though according to the NY team, the Pats committed a penalty on every.single.play).
Uh...they were calling the game on TV not radio...probably why you didn't get much fleshing out what the VIEWER was seeing.

It supposedly was the broadcast from 98.5 in Boston, which I believe is the sports Hub

I agree. Injuries at RB are such a crapshoot, no matter what kind of runner they are. I think age is the biggest factor in whether a RB can stay healthy. Taylor has the edge there.

I think that it would technically be legal to guarantee their salaries or convert their salaries into signing bonuses, to keep them happy so that they won’t lose any money. Vets on the practice squad are limited to around 225K per year, I believe. Because they are both vested veterans and are not subject to waivers, you could then cut both of them and add them to the practice squad after the 53 man roster is set.

They could then either be kept on the practice squad and protected/activated weekly, or, more likely in the case of Bolden especially, they put on the 53 once a couple of players are transitioned to in-season IR (only players who make the original 53 man roster are eligible for these designations).

Despite the fact that this would be technically legal, I’m sure that Roger would try to take away another draft pick or two, for violating the spirit of the salary cap.

You are talking about the FOURTH man up at RB. Excluding receiving backs like White, most teams aren’t 4 deep.
Finding a rb cut somewhere and putting him on the practice squad makes us better than relying on bolden at RB.
SIX years ago he was needed and we signed Steven Jackson playing with a walker instead. He is now 31 has carried the ball 30-some times in his career since then.
Bolden is no longer a top 250 NFL RB and his role if he has one is special teams.

yeah...they carried the audio of the Fox TV cast...that's why it sucked as radio PxP

Why would you want Bolden on the practice squad? His only value is special teams.
I agree with a rb on the ps, but not an over the hill guy who wasn’t good to begin with as a rb. Dozens of better rbs will be cut this week.

Latest projection of the SportsHub has the Pats keeping FIVE RB's...that would make any Bolden argument moot. He's the 5th RB.

A couple of thoughts I had on tonight's game.

1. Interesting that we didn't see one RPO or planned run from Cam this entire preseason.

2. In skimming the thread I saw several blame Cam for that pick. That's just BS. He put the ball right on the receiver's hands into a small window. That was really just a great play by Martinez.

3. Not only is the OL really good. I think the back ups were really good as well

4. I thought you saw tonight a little prevue of the difference between preseason football and regular season. For the first time this TC, Jones dropped back and didn't know where to go with the ball right away on several occasions. It was clear that he was fooled on his initial drop back and eventually it cost him all those sacks. Not because he bad, but because he's a ROOKIE, playing the most difficult skill position in professional sports,

5. Nice to see Asisasi show up. Very smooth receiver and could be better than average after the catch. Watched him block. Not powerful yet, but puts his face in there and is very willing

6. Was it the play of Stevenson or Taylor that prompts Bill to be comfortable about trading Sony. Taylor's making the case it was him.

7. Wade didn't look out of place when I watched him. Yeh, he was pushed off, but he should have expected that. Rookie mistake. BTW- on that play, I find it hard to believe that there wasn't a S in the picture when the receiver caught the ball. I'd be worry less about Wade and more about the Safeties on that play.

8. Barmore, Jones and Stevenson are all going to play impact roles from the get go, Perkins hasn't looked lost out there but has a lot of guys ahead of him, but I like him. Looks like Magroom and Bledsoe are getting red shirt years and final pick Tre Nixon looked like he had a little juice in his legs on first glance. They SHOULD be able to get him to the practice squad for some much needed reps

9. I couldn't help thinking after watching Hoyer look so crisp and sharp in his first drive that if he were a 22 year old rookie, there would be a lot of fan boys crying to the Felgers of the world that HE should be the starting QB. There really is a big difference between the preseason and the regular season, just like it ramps up again in the one and done playoffs.

10. Can is going to be the QB come 9/12. No question and I think he will have a much more robust playbook than the one he showed this preseason. I expect him to be much better (though the bar was set pretty low) this season. But he WILL be on a short leash.

I have no argument about Taylor's skills as a football player just like you pointed out. In that situation he is a MUCH better runner from scrimmage that JWhite. I just believe that if the Pats are going to win this year and go deep into the playoffs they will have to successfully run the football (a la the Titans) and to do that they will need a whole slew of RB's. Love Harris, but he's never proved he can be a "bellcow" RB with 20 odd runs a game. Stephenson is just a rookie, and Taylor is a nice 3rd guy in the Burkhead like of a role. Of these 3 only Stephenson has show any durability and that was just 2 years in college.

Hey. Maybe Burkhead IS that guy you can call in the middle of the season when he's healthy and bring him in seamlessly if any of the your top 3 guys get hurt. I saw a clip of him running full speed on a treadmill prior to camp.

I don't think the Sproles comparison works for me, although they do many of the same things. Sproles had a much thicker and heavier body IIRC even though he was short. But you are right Sproles held up well over many years.\

Right now I'm more concerned about that roster projection in that it doesn't have a FB and only 8 OLmen. Going to be a real tough cut down day.

Interesting. That was also the tv team.

The trouble is, Kendrick Bourne was open by -at least- 20 yards down the left sideline. Nobody within a mile of him.

Preseason is about working on weaknesses, that's Cam's only strength.

Great play by Martinez, who is talented, but bad recognition and decision to throw by Cam. He had a DB over the top and didn't recognize the LB'er dropping back into zone coverage. The most egregious offense was Bourne waving his hands wide open to Jakobi's left, Mac would have looked the safety off and/or thrown to wide open Bourne... Cam doesn't do much play feints or throw outside the hashes if he can help it.

Agreed, the starters came out of the game with Cam and the backups did good.

This game was closer to the Washington game, better defense on the other side of the field.
5. Nice to see Asisasi show up. Very smooth receiver and could be better than average after the catch. Watched him block. Not powerful yet, but puts his face in there and is very willing
He's the third TE on the roster.
6. Was it the play of Stevenson or Taylor that prompts Bill to be comfortable about trading Sony. Taylor's making the case it was him.
It was always both, both have been impressive in the preseason, Taylor stretching into last year.
I trust him more than any corner not named Gilmore, Jackson or Jones... Ross also showed us something tonight in the slot with Jones out.

All the rookies but the big three above (Barmore, Jones, Stevenson) will get the Foxboro flu or end up on the PS.

Who?

Cam starts, he's the bridge QB, Mac will eventually take over assuming health. No need to rush it, let it happen organically.

Secondary:

1.) I do not remember seeing mccourty play much, if any, this preseason. clearly he is our starting free safety. Communication in the secondary has been spotty this preseason and mccourty solves that every time he is on the field! And maybe Ross or Bryant slides into the old Harmon position as backup.

2.) c Jackson is definitely one of the starting starting corners and Phillips is definitely the starting string safety. right now c Jackson would be backed up by either m Jackson or Ross while mills backs up Phillips and a linebacker in third and long

3.) the starting cb opposite c Jackson is wide open. If Gilmore were healthy, he would start immediately. Slowjuan may actually win the starting job, not because he is good, but because all the alternatives suck!

4.) j Jones should be the mega important slot corner, but is he healthy? Wade seems like he could eventually become the backup slot guy. But man, does he suck on the outside!

5.) virgin is terrible and needs to go back to the practice squad.

6.) after cut downs, we desperately need to sign/trade the best press man corner that is available.

7.) bethel and Davis probably make this team as core special teams guys.

The trouble is, Kendrick Bourne was open by -at least- 20 yards down the left sideline. Nobody within a mile of him.

but in fairness to newton, Bourne was born to drop a lot of passes!

Possible (big) 53 man surprise: Bill Murray. Came into the game leading the team in QB hurries. 1.5 sacks tonight, two more QB hits, playing a ton on special teams. He could make it through waivers but he shouldn’t, if other teams are paying attention. Not sure how they fit him but I wouldn’t be surprised if he is a BB binky.

He makes it over Anderson.
