A couple of thoughts I had on tonight's game.
1. Interesting that we didn't see one RPO or planned run from Cam this entire preseason.
Preseason is about working on weaknesses, that's Cam's only strength.
2. In skimming the thread I saw several blame Cam for that pick. That's just BS. He put the ball right on the receiver's hands into a small window. That was really just a great play by Martinez.
Great play by Martinez, who is talented, but bad recognition and decision to throw by Cam. He had a DB over the top and didn't recognize the LB'er dropping back into zone coverage. The most egregious offense was Bourne waving his hands wide open to Jakobi's left, Mac would have looked the safety off and/or thrown to wide open Bourne... Cam doesn't do much play feints or throw outside the hashes if he can help it.
3. Not only is the OL really good. I think the back ups were really good as well
Agreed, the starters came out of the game with Cam and the backups did good.
4. I thought you saw tonight a little prevue of the difference between preseason football and regular season. For the first time this TC, Jones dropped back and didn't know where to go with the ball right away on several occasions. It was clear that he was fooled on his initial drop back and eventually it cost him all those sacks. Not because he bad, but because he's a ROOKIE, playing the most difficult skill position in professional sports,
This game was closer to the Washington game, better defense on the other side of the field.
5. Nice to see Asisasi show up. Very smooth receiver and could be better than average after the catch. Watched him block. Not powerful yet, but puts his face in there and is very willing
He's the third TE on the roster.
6. Was it the play of Stevenson or Taylor that prompts Bill to be comfortable about trading Sony. Taylor's making the case it was him.
It was always both, both have been impressive in the preseason, Taylor stretching into last year.
7. Wade didn't look out of place when I watched him. Yeh, he was pushed off, but he should have expected that. Rookie mistake. BTW- on that play, I find it hard to believe that there wasn't a S in the picture when the receiver caught the ball. I'd be worry less about Wade and more about the Safeties on that play.
I trust him more than any corner not named Gilmore, Jackson or Jones... Ross also showed us something tonight in the slot with Jones out.
8. Barmore, Jones and Stevenson are all going to play impact roles from the get go, Perkins hasn't looked lost out there but has a lot of guys ahead of him, but I like him. Looks like Magroom and Bledsoe are getting red shirt years and final pick Tre Nixon looked like he had a little juice in his legs on first glance. They SHOULD be able to get him to the practice squad for some much needed reps
All the rookies but the big three above (Barmore, Jones, Stevenson) will get the Foxboro flu or end up on the PS.
9. I couldn't help thinking after watching Hoyer look so crisp and sharp in his first drive that if he were a 22 year old rookie, there would be a lot of fan boys crying to the Felgers of the world that HE should be the starting QB. There really is a big difference between the preseason and the regular season, just like it ramps up again in the one and done playoffs.
Who?
10. Can is going to be the QB come 9/12. No question and I think he will have a much more robust playbook than the one he showed this preseason. I expect him to be much better (though the bar was set pretty low) this season. But he WILL be on a short leash.
Cam starts, he's the bridge QB, Mac will eventually take over assuming health. No need to rush it, let it happen organically.
