Yes, Joker. Jones did not have his best game. 18/35? He get's kudos for not throwing an int, but more than a few of his throws were off.
That game was a rock fight and an excellent win on the road. Mac Jones and Justin Herbert were both 18-35 in a tough game that saw a lot of pressure on both of them. The upside for me was seeing Mac Jones not turn the ball over in a game that looked a lot like what we can expect to see against the Buffalo Bills. He was off on several passes but pressured on most of those throws.

This kid, PJ Walker, next week (Panthers' Darnold will be most likely be out on the concussion protocol) is very untested and is only 5'10, 180 lbs. The defense should feast on him in a matchup of 4-4 teams.

We're all Giants fans tomorrow nite!

Some thoughts.

  • It took eight games, but Mac Jones finally looked like a rookie making rookie mistakes. The game was too sped up for him in the first half. He seemed to be hearing footsteps at times and threw the ball too quickly and off target. That said, if Bourne catches the pass going into the end zone and Meyers got that second foot down in bounds, the perception of his game would be completely different. The positive is that he has shown he can make the deep plays hitting receivers in stride (something a lot of people questioned whether he can do it). I chalk it up to one game and we are onto Carolina.
  • My controversial take of the day. I think people overrate Justin Herbert. When he is on, he is one of the best QBs in the league. But he has shown he can be rattled and has had more games where he has been mediocre or just average than elite this season. It is two weeks in a row where he has played like crap. If he can develop consistency, he will be a top QB in the league. But I am wondering if he is QB who can play awesome when everything is going right, but completely turtles if a defense can throw things at him he isn't prepared for. He seems to not be good at reading rushes and coverages if they are not more obvious. Not sure if he lacks the football intelligence or just needs more experience with more complex NFL defenses.
  • I still don't get why they didn't run the ball more. It seems like they are using lesser defenses to develop things rather than just score as many points as possible. This was a game where they should have just run it down the Chargers' throats, but they seem to wanted to use the game to try to develop an more aggressive passing game.
  • I was concerned that Brandon Bolden's success last week was going to be a bad thing because he would be used in key spots in this game. I was right. He should never be in there on a critical third down running the ball. I get they don't want to over work Harris and Stevenson, but I think they use them too sparingly in games like this.
  • Judon and Baramore are two players that teams have to scheme against. Baramore has the potential to become a complete stud. Judon isn't getting star treatment like he should. O-linemen are still getting away with far too much holding on him that would never happen against Bosa on the other side of the ball today.
  • Mills is miscast as an outside CB. If the Pats can pick up a CB or Wade can be the #2, I think Mills could be great as a slot or even replacing McCourty for spells. That looks to be his natural position - nickel CB or FS.
  • The o-line deserves a lot of credit. They still are still far from perfect, but they are night and day from what they were the first month and a half of the season. They have finally found a mix that works. The question is when Trent Brown comes back does he replace Wynn?
  • I think the Pats need to be buyers tomorrow. I think they need a speedy LB, a CB, and a quick slot receiver. The first two are far more important than the latter.
  • One thing I noticed on a lot of the routes, the current group of receivers don't run the pick routes nearly as effective as we have seen in the past. They are better than they were at the start of the season, but I have seen several times today where the two receivers were maybe a yard or so too far away from each other when they crossed each other which does nothing to slow down or re-route the defenders covering them. Hopefully they will get that fixed.
  • There are still too many stupid mistakes, but also a lot more situational awareness this game. Earlier in the season, the Pats would not have ran down the clock they did on their last drive. They might have beaten the Cowboys and/or Bucs with the situational awareness they showed today.

He played today
Doesn't change the fact that we wouldn't have had him for the first 7 games. So, 7 games without Mills or Gilmore.. Pretty sure the Pats wouldn't be 4-4 if that was the case.

I hope the mods wake up. This is Patriots forum. This is a thread about the Patriots game today. Keep the Tom ****kng Brady **** out of here!
I do find it odd as well these random comments about Tom’s game today.

I agree. Gilmore would have made a huge difference in the Buccaneers game and even more against the Cowboys.

I’d add that he was ice on the closing drive. Trademark of a winner.

Joker - Look at Mac's OTHER games on the road to this point and then come back and talk.
DaB look athe fact that he is a ROOKIE!!!! and look at the other rookies in this league? Your QB WINS on the road against a quality opponenet he merits at least a B-...unless he throws a ton of picks...a rookie????? a rookie WINS and THAT is no lower than a B. Period. Now I had the Pats, at best, a 5-12 team before the first snap of the season. I updated my view to 7-10, 8-9...and THAT being completely satisfied with Mac Jones play!!~!! You friggin' guys are putting your Tom Brady template on a ROOKIE QB and then downplaying the POINT to football ...WINNING THE GODDAMNED GAME. If Brady was our QB today I'd give his performance a C or C minus....but a green rookie??? Mac did what was THE most important thing in any game...he WON. No way anyone should rate him below a B.

Sit back and let the future of our franchise sink in...this kid is IT and he's only going to get better. He's NOT average.

He was awesome to start the game and played fairly well in the second half especially down the stretch. But he was awful for most of the first half after the first drive and a half. But he did step up when he needed to.

Mac could have been hurt there. Incredible that this didn’t draw a flag

I think he will see a fine. It was well after the whistle.

Yeah. But he wasn't healthy. And it's not like he lit up the Panthers game. If he played more than sparingly, he'd at least have had a tackle.

And it isn’t the usual suspects. Tom has a bad game and it gets posted here, Tom has a good game it gets posted here. Move on people. He is on a different team. This thread is about the patriots game today!
I also noticed updates on that game in the game day thread.

You know, we don't really know how limited he was all the back to training camp. It was clear he was holding out for more money and more years on his deal. Against Dak, JC Jackson on one side and Stephon Gilmore on the other would have been better than what we saw. Note: Prescott is out for tonight's game against the Vikings.

Rob, not sure how your coming up with Herbert being overrated. He’s pretty darn good for only being in his second year. Peyton Manning had a hard time with Belichick defenses early on in his career before he started catching on. And no I’m not calling Herbert a Manning but he has had some real success in this league early on. Patriots have his number no question and you can’t name another team that does.

Totally agree about being buyers at the deadline. Would not mind seeing them making one last reunion with Amendola or someone comparable as a security blanket type. I’d also look at a speedy lb like Kevin Pierre-Louis from Houston via a 7th round pick.
