I was disappointed with Jones before his injury. I expected better after what he showed last year. He didn’t deliver it. I’m still hopeful he will recover and get back on track. But I don’t see anything that makes him head and shoulders above Zappe. What specifically do you see as strengths that set him apart?
Zappe beats Det and the Browns and of course many reactionary fans think Zappe is a better QB than Jones.
Sure, he looks good with no pressure and open receivers, but most any QB would. Not to add playing with the lead, which helps immensely.
Jones won a National Championship with Alabama (unbeaten season). Zappe played for Houston Baptist and Western Kentucky. On paper Jones should be a level above BUT on grass (or field turf) they seem much closer than you would expect. There have been QBs from small schools do well in the NFL but a late pick and a small school is probably less common. A great pick, no matter how it plays out.
Maybe not a nice thing to say, but it doesn’t matter how he takes it or how graceful he is about it. Bledsoe, Young, and Rodgers didn’t like being backups either. If that’s his job, he needs to do it and understand that he’s one play away from starting at all times.
The expectation is Mac Jones will resume his role as the starting QB when healthy, but head coach Bill Belichick wouldn't commit to that during his recent press conference.
The team as a whole is getting better. Zappe benefits from that. That said I think you have to be pretty special to go in there and play like you've been there all along

He’s absolutely faced pressure and he’s handled it beautifully. Myles Garrett, arguably the best edge in the league, was rushing him today. Can’t say he hasn’t faced good competition. You can’t teach his poise in the pocket.
As for throwing to open receivers, also not always true. He’s made some legit tight window throws with zip. Gets the ball to the intermediate boundary, outside the hashes, quite well, too.
Well, unfortunately if Belichick chooses Zappe, the Raiders have made a big long term commitment to Carr. I could see McDaniels giving up a first for Mac otherwise.

I think there are a lot of folks who assume that playing for a small school means a player doesn’t have the talent for a big time program. But there are a lot of reasons to end up in a small school that have nothing to do with talent.
