Why are you so obsessed with his stats in the game ? We didnt lose because Smith played well but because we could not get the job done in the situations that counted. He didnt do anything special but got two gift wrapped easy deep completions TDs (Hunt + Hill) plus another gifted TD when Chung let the ball go through his hands.

Smiths stats are ultimately meaningless.

How was the second one gift wrapped? The second long TD hunt exploited a matchup with a vastly inferior Cassius Marsh, and slow as a turtle Jordan Richards was a step too late on over the top coverage.

Even if they were gift wrapped, that's an even bigger problem. Lack of communication. That means our D is not on the same page, which makes it a bad D.

Even without those two plays smith had 2 long 90 plus yard touchdown drives where he carved up the middle of the field and exploited our linebackers. We gave smith plenty of time and he made us pay.

Smiths stats are not meaningless. When have you seen the patriots ever win a game when they allowed an opposing QB to throw for a 150 passer rating against them?

The game turned on a few key plays. The Patriots failed to convert two 4th and inches inside the Chiefs half of the field. The Chiefs hit two huge touchdowns. Basically four plays that swung the game. As Patriots fans, we're used to those plays going our way. Last night, the Chiefs got all the bounces. Give them credit, they played very well.

I thought that going on 4th and 1 was very unlike BB. Usually he always takes the points. Those 4th down stops for a defense are huge even if the Chiefs ensuing drive doesnt score either. The Chiefs were waiting for the Brady sneak so they had the middle closed off.

The Chiefs big plays were bend and break defensively. NEs defense rarely gives up big TDs in bunches like that. Its always been keep everything in front of you. Give up yardage getting the opposing offense in the redzone where there is less room to operate.

Chung had an INT go right through his hands too.

This game reminded me of the Jets playoff loss a few years ago. Mistakes and blunders in all 3 phases of the game including coaching.

I think it's less Marsh being inferior and more that he arrived 5 days ago and is playing a step slow because he doesn't know the defense, or at least isn't comfortable playing in it yet. How could he be?

That should improve with reps, although it remains to be seen how much. I doubt he'll suddenly become a plus in coverage in a few weeks, but I don't expect him to remain as bad as he was on that play.

Brady mentioning attitude PUBLICLY was a bit of a stunner. Wonder if it is the new guys or ****y, satisfied 2-ringers. Or both.

I really don't care about any of that. You can go to a Chiefs thread and discuss that if you want.

I'm discussing what Smith did on one play that created a TD against the Pats defense.

I gave Smith credit for manipulating the Pats defense on one play that led to a TD and you're freaking spewing "Oh dear God......Joe Montana ......." hahaha WTF is wrong with you? Jesus.

I think smith is garbage, if you disagree take it up on the chiefs board. Looking off? Really not a special trait, every NFL QB does that. Think Brees won't do that to us next week? Difference is Brees has accuracy poise arm athleticism that smith doesn't have.

I don't remember who the players were but there was a shot on the sidelines at BB and two players were laughing it up at the end of the 42-27 thumping. Laughing like that during a loss just bugged the crap out of me. Everyone should be pissed with what happened last night

Back to that play.

I'm curious if McCourty could have played Harris differently. He ends up staying over the top which left him virtually unable to prevent that TD. Wondering if McCourty should have played him underneath and let Harmon cover the top.

Front view of that play. Harris just blocks out McCourty for an easy catch.

(Please do not imply that "Harris caught a TD" is somehow my validation that Harris is the next Tony Gonzales)

Great view here, completely agree with you. Harris is a big body, he basically boxed mccourty out. Smart move would have been exactly how you described .

Totally disagree with you on smith, but like your post above. I wouldn't rank smith in the top 22 QBs in the NFL. Never been impressed with his game

OK. That's great. Not sure what any of that has to do with that play but that's wonderful.

You answered it yourself it is because they created a matchup with some shifts that should have never happened. The throw was a gimme which makes it a gift for him.

Not concerned at all about communication issues or players not being on the same page during the first game of the season. That happens. If this still goes on in middle October it is a different story.

Which was the right gameplan as he proofed several times where a single negative play meant they couldnt sustain their drives. We just produced too few of those negative plays and they made too much progress on first down. I dont wanna hear any of this crap about rushing the passer. If you dont have elite pass rushers and play against a mediocre but mobile QB you give him the intermediate routes and make him beat you with his hand. And he actually did that yesterday.

Smiths stats are not meaningless. When have you seen the patriots ever win a game when they allowed an opposing QB to throw for a 150 passer rating against them?

It is meaningless. He can have a perfect passer rating for all I care he still wouldnt have beaten us if we didnt beat ourselves.

I don't disagree that Brees has a good chance of having a great game next week, but what if he doesn't? What if the defense plays like a completely different squad against a different offense with a different game plan? It happens all the time at high levels of football. If they shut down the Saints offense, does that say more about them than this game did? How is that determined? I think a more measured approach to analysis is warranted this early in the season when the information on which we have to base said analysis is minimal.

You'll see that on literally every losing sideline, especially when cameras are fixated on the sideline just looking for any type of interesting reaction. Laughing for a few seconds while losing is completely meaningless.

Probably true, but I do not think there were shots of Brady smiling in the 4th.

Reiss:

That is what I mean when I talk about execution being a bigger issue than the playcalls themselves. Tiny and stupid mistakes..

Ryan was 145.

Question:

Is it a penalty to grab the helmet? King gets a 15 yard penalty during a KR but he was pulling the runner out of bounds.

Yeah I was going over that okay in my mind and DMac basically let this bum TE post him up. DMac has been iffy in pass coverage most of the time, and yes, an over/under coverage works there based upon Harmons positioning, or at the very least make Smith throw it over DMac. It was terrible coverage. One of many last night.

How many time on the Tv broadcast did you see a Chiefs player catch a pass and not have a Patriot in the frame until they had gained 6 yards? Felt like an extreme version of prevent that didn't accomplish jack.
