Official Post Game Thread - Chiefs at Patriots

I think it is safe to say our offense handled the loss of Tom Brady a lot better than the loss of Julian Edelman.

Biggest issues for me are:

1. How long it takes to adjust on offense. Brady is a creature of habit now. He likes his safety blankets. His top 3 wide receivers are now guys who are better vertically than horizontally, while he is a QB who is better throwing horizontally than vertically. We need to adjust, and quick, because NO are gonna put up some points next week and then the Texans come to town who are going to have a similar game plan to the Chiefs along with a ferocious pass rush. I don't think it will happen, but it's not completely outside the realms of possibility that there is a 0-3 start here.

2. Depth on D, in particular in the front seven. We currently have a number of potential has beens and some not yet made it players on D. I think a few of the problems tonight were scheme choices which are correctable but it's worrying that in week 1 we were forced to play a bad safety at LB, a guy who only arrived 5 days ago, a rookie at DE etc. One or two more injuries could ruin this D. I think Hightower (if healthy) has to go back to the middle. The defense runs through him.

Well said. This is still the Julian Edelman offense and what they did was try to plug Amendola in Edelman's place, but it's just not the same. Edelman has an uncanny ability to create separation and get open in two seconds and get to the right place at the right time (just past the down line) and it's just not possible to recreate this talent. Despite that, the offense was getting by until Amendola came out of the game, then it went off a cliff because Brady lost both his two favorite third down targets that could work the underbelly of the defense.

I think what we'll see is the Patriots (and Brady) realizing that this is a mistake and that the offense needs a completely new identity. It needs to reinvent itself instead of trying to find a substitute for Edelman. That is too big a void to fill.

My thoughts after a crappy night's "sleep". No, I didn't lose sleep over the game (eff that). I got to bed about three hours after my usual time, but the dog and cat still got me up at 4:30 am to let them out.

Anyway, there's probably not much here that hasn't already been well-covered in the previous 299 comments, but here goes:

CLICHE #1: BB, MP, & McD will have a metric crap-tonne of talking points for the meeting room and practice field, and this game should serve as a "wake up call." A crappy WIN might have served that purpose just as well, but it is waht it is.

OFFENSE:
I expected the offense to sputter. In addition to needing to integrate four new skill position "starters" (not including Dorsett), all the veterans are essentially having to learn a brand-new, "100% Edelman-free" playbook from scratch and on the fly. The playbook that the team had been studying and practicing for three months pretty much went into the trash can just two weeks ago. This was their first test of the new one. The results weren't pretty, obviously.

Brady did not look sharp (see above), but I think at least a couple-three of his "overthrows" were more or less intentional.

I wasn't surprised that White ran the ball better than some folks may have expected, or that he was featured at the beginning. I also wasn't surprised that Gillislee got stuffed twice on 4th-and-short. I think he needs a lot more live-fire reps than he had going into this game. But I also wouldn't have called a run up the gut for either of those plays after the ref stopped play for a measurement. Dead giveaway on both of them. Of course, it's entirely possible that the team hadn't executed any of the possible alternative plays well in practice. Then, too, KC defended those two run attempts perfectly.

The OL seemed very good until the Q4 when KC's lead made the Pats offense one-dimensional and KC's pass-rushers could pin their ears back. Of course, before that, the OL was protecting Brady against only a three-man rush most of the time.

And KC executed a very well-conceived defensive game plan (rush three, drop eight) with very few missteps. It helped that Vonovich's crew didn't call DPI except in the most obvious cases. Both incompletions to Burkhead probably should have drawn flags. OTOH, more PI calls probably would've gone both ways.

DEFENSE:
The defense is attempting to integrate six new players (seven, if you count Richards), and they flat-out blew several plays (more runs than passes, really). Beyond struggling to read/coordinate/communicate correctly, tackling was inconsistent.

The surprise of the defensive game was that Jordan Richards actually looked competent for the most part (tied for second most tackles with Van Noy), at least in comparison to the rest of the defense's performance.

Also, for the most part, the Pats D successfully put a damper on Kelce and Hill. Aside from Hill's one 75-yard breakaway TD, they held him to 9.7 ypc with very little YAC. In contrast, 3 of Amendola's 6 catches went for 20+ yards. However, KC clearly saw that strategy coming from a mile away and their offense was prepared with alternative plays to keep Hill and Kelce in the game as more than decoys.

And then there was Kareem Hunt.

Hunt was my #1 2017 draft binky for the Pats. KC took him with the very next pick after the Pats took Garcia. I acknowledge that this was only one game and that Hunt was shredding a defense that often looked like a bunch of 3rd-stringers who had met each other for the first time running out of the tunnel. And KC's run-blocking was very well executed. But still, the kid clearly has some real chops.

Then, too, the last time KC blew out the Pats (week-4 in 2014), it was Knile Davis and Jamaal Charles combining for 199 yards on 34 carries. It may be a "passing league", but lack of execution in run-D will still kill you.

And Alex Smith played maybe the best game of his life. Even subtracting the long TD receptions by Hill and Hunt, Smith still went 26/33 (79%) for 215 yards (6.5 ypp) and two TDs.

CLICHE #2: We're on to New Orleans.

Edelman loss
Hightower missing all that time, then getting hurt even before he could really get back into the flow
Gronk timidity
Cooks softness
A bad (at least right now) LB corps, made worse by the absence of even a JAG like McClellin
Some basic bonehead defensive plays
Brady being uncomfortable without his binky
Depleted WR corps
Malcolm Brown's play
Questionable playcalling regarding the RB usage

There's more, but that'll be enough to keep BB busy for a while.

You could add Brady (and McD) not having Gillislee and Burkhead for most part of preseason to that list. With Jules gone these are two prime chain movers and they just need some time on the field.

Solder was out most of TC as well, Branch was late to enter the new front, edge was/still is a revolving door, Marsh and Dorsett don't even have spare clothes in NE yet etc..

This was always going to be preseason game #5 and it might take a bit longer . and yet (like said) . this same game could easily go in a very different direction.

I don't mind this heap of mistakes happening in week 1. Not at all. I don't think BB does either.. he loves some prime “incriminating“ video room material

Was that the first time we have lost with Brady as QB when leading at half at home in the regular season? I think the only other one was the Ravens playoff game.

Did anyone write an article yet wondering what could have happened if the Patriots had started Kaepernick?

Some of you posters on here are ridiculous. Yes, we got our asses handed to us on a Chiefly platter last night, but...

How often does this happen???
We WILL bounce back.
You should all know what happens after a Pats loss.

Lastly, the last 3 times we lost the season opener we won the SB...

IB(TB)WT!

Every team starts the year even. There are no great teams in the first half of the year.

As of today, our Patriots are average at best top to bottom

They kept Jimmy for a reason. Belichick saw brady lose zip on his balls in the super bowl. Here's something to ponder. BB knows Brady's arm strength isn't there so he makes the offense more veritcal therefore exposing Brady so that Jimmy can get in sooner. BB always said he wants to win with another QB. I don't know, something to think about.

Unintentional comedy score: 110 out of 100

Had similar thought. At least some High in the middle (start) and then use him all over w some freedom. I don't think strictly edge/line for the season is the plan anyway. Front 7 was such a mess in preseason losing key players, missing on new players, missing key starters. I like Wise, Marsh but they need some real reps first. Hightower out for a few weeks might not be so bad..

Any thoughts on the refs in this game? I thought they let the chiefs get away with some stuff.

Defensive holding of WR and TE on almost every play. They called it a couple of times, but that's a pretty good strategy. Also, on the last TD the KC guard was allowed to tackle a defender to the ground.

Brady: 16/36, 267 yards= 27 points. Let that sink in. I give the Chiefs their due respect. They played very well, but calm down guys. Brady completed less than 50% of his passes & STILL managed to hang 27 on a damn good defense. I know there were a couple of short fields, but the points were still scored. KC is a good, solid team. Basically everything went right for KC last night (except Berry possibly being IR'd). We hung 28 on SEA in the SB & Brady played out of his mind. Let's not jump out the window because of one game. "Our season" doesn't really start until around Turkey Day. We need to keep things in their proper context. Let the best coach ever work his magic off the field & The GOAT QB work his magic on the field & see where we are by Nov/Dec.

Can't wait to see this game talked about by our boys on America's game next year.

Ah, Peters was holding Hogan every play - that explains it.
