PATRIOTS NEWS OFFICIAL: Patriots Finally Acquire AJ Brown

Breaking New England Patriots Team News
True, how could we survive without the next Cole Strange.

Well we did get someone saying we should have traded away the pick we used on Drake Maye for a WR, so now we have all our bases covered.

Bad trade. Vrabel and Wolf should have read this forum to learn that you never trade future first rounders

2 1st round picks, 1 2nd rounder, 1 3rd rounder for just Ramsey, Miller. And yet, they're right back in the mix.
If they don't make those trades maybe they win the Sb, maybe they don't. I'll call it unlikely.
Maybe they draft Justin Jefferson, maybe they don't. I'll call it 50/50.
Maybe they have more success the following years, maybe they don't. Certainly not 2023, they were decimated by injuries.
You can keep pretending that trading picks for talent wasn't critical to their SB win, but that's all you're doing. I'm not going to argue with success, which they are still having by the way, again despite trading away the almighty draft pick.
I am seriously hoping the Patriots have MORE success than the Rams have had in the last 10 years.

I don't think I'm being unrealistic either.

Early playoff exits and not making the playoffs at all. A QB on his last legs? The Patriots should have much bigger aspirations. As it is, the Rams lucked into their one SB win during this period, because the Bengals were not up to the task.

If AJ Brown is the key to getting the Patriots a SB victory in the next few years, then of course it was worth it. I think this team is good but it is incredibly thin compared to the competition. This team is dying for LBs, Safeties, DEs who can rush the passer, younger OGs, and one more tight end. We are aways away.

I truthfully believe with the chaos last season with Hurts, OC and team chemistry was the reason for lower Y/G. They were all flat out dysfunctional.
Put me down for 1400-1500 yds this season. Diggs got 1000 last season and AJ is better than Diggs at this point in their careers
Could be. Hard to know. I hope so.

Knees never improve, they only get worse. WRs need their knees.

I'm sure every team has that one position they can't draft. I've always noticed the Steelers can't draft a CB which was a big reason they couldn't ever hang with the Pats.
I was curious about this and asked ChatGPT.

Team
Position they struggle drafting
Examples of why
Chicago Bears
Quarterback

Cade McNown, Rex Grossman, Mitch Trubisky, Justin Fields; long failure to draft/develop a true franchise QB

Cleveland Browns

Quarterback

Tim Couch, Brady Quinn, Brandon Weeden, Johnny Manziel, Baker Mayfield; decades of QB instability

New England Patriots

Wide receiver

Chad Jackson, Aaron Dobson, N’Keal Harry, Tyquan Thornton, Ja’Lynn Polk; recurring misses despite strong drafting elsewhere

New York Jets

Edge rusher

Vernon Gholston; long-running struggle to draft a dominant outside pass rusher

Las Vegas / Oakland Raiders

Quarterback

JaMarcus Russell; one of the biggest QB draft busts ever, with little long-term drafted QB success afterward

Baltimore Ravens

Wide receiver

Travis Taylor, Mark Clayton, Breshad Perriman, Rashod Bateman’s slow/injury-affected start; WR stands out because Baltimore drafts many other positions well

New York Giants

Offensive line

Ereck Flowers, Will Hernandez, Matt Peart, Evan Neal; repeated premium picks without sustained OL stability

Seattle Seahawks

Offensive line

James Carpenter, Germain Ifedi, Rees Odhiambo, Ethan Pocic; recurring protection issues despite repeated draft investment

Washington Commanders

Quarterback

Heath Shuler, Patrick Ramsey, Jason Campbell, Robert Griffin III’s short peak, Dwayne Haskins; long failure to draft a stable franchise QB

Good grief yes the Browns and finding a QB they’ve been horrendous at that. For the Bears I guess we’ll see about Caleb. Not sold on him yet.

AJ would dominate in the slot.

So, I see some people like the trade and some people don’t, with the people not liking it repeating themselves about 40 times apiece, which is pretty standard.

Good to get on the record I guess. I like the trade.

Notice that AJB's yards/game tailed off in 2025. Not a good sign. Approaching the cliff...................................
If you’re being facetious: LOL
If you’re being serious: It was Philly’s offensive scheme/Hurts last year.

I like the trade.
Do I wish we gave up less...sure, but I also wish gas wasn't almost $2/litre (that's almost $8/gallon for my American friends).
AJ makes us better, period.
We have a team to compete now.
Not sure how you can see it any other way.

This trade was about AJ Brown, Howie Roseman, and Mike Vrabel.

Brown whined his way out of town, Roseman was willing to accommodate because of bad chemistry and bad knees if he could fleece someone, and Vrabel drove the Pats' willingness to be fleeced.
I'm not sold on the team being fleeced.

There was a lot of buzz at the start of FA that teams were making trade offers for Brown but at the time it was discussed that the Eagles were most likely going to wait until June 1st to execute the trade.

So I find it completely possible that other teams were willing to offer comparable trade compensation or more but Brown indicated his heavy preference for NE and ultimately the Eagles and Pats agreed to this trade they executed months ago.

Its not beyond the NFL to milk a juicy story and lets face it. If it was reported that the deal was agreed to and was waiting for execution then we wouldnt have had a 150 page thread discussing the rumors.

Fun to look forward to if all goes well

The depth argument is interesting. It was made a lot last year, and for Patriot fans it felt like the depth was thin based upon our history of belichick having by far the best quality depth most years.
But when you look around the league, who has depth? Who are we comparing to by saying our depth is thin?
Largely every NFL pushed anyone with potential into a starting role. Day 2 and 2 draft picks only sit if they suck.
Depth is now unproven guys and guys who failed. There are no teams with “solid backups” across the roster.

You named a few positions you think the depth is weak, but can you find a roster in the NFL that you any do the same with?

I’ll hit a few of the ones you named.
OG We have 2 veteran starters and a guy we feel is a solid backup. We just drafted a OT in round 1 who I expect will be the first guy off the bench at both OT and OG spots. We also have another OT with starting experience and a draft choice. I think it would be hard to find many teams with better depth behind their 5 starters.
TE. We just lost our TE2 for the season but the depth behind him was a 3rd round pick. He bumps up, we probably keep a TE3 on the is and use an OT as the blocking TE. Again how many teams could lose a TE2 and have a replacement just drafted in round 3 to step in?
LB. Yeah, the name don’t excite me, but neither did last years and we were fine. We aren’t going to start losing games because instead if Tavai, Mapu and Gibbins we have different jags. Not sure it would be easy to find a team you could convince me has good backup LBs.

More than just better than Diggs, he is a better complement to Mayes strengths and a better fit in the scheme. The best downfield thrower in the league now has a receiver that thrives at those routes.
