Well Nut to answer your question IMO here is what I think a 'Homer' isMaybe we should start a poll asking who considers themselves a "homer". I know a year or two ago I asked what a "homer" was because that was being used back then too. No one had a real answer.
My question is, how can you love a team, be a fan of that team (root word fanatic), and not be a "homer"?
As a homer I agree and I want Brady to pick up his fourth ring and third SB MVP so bad I can taste it, but in my heart of hearts I know that Joe Montana never lost an SB when he had the ball in his hands, an FG behind, with 90 seconds left and one of the best two or three receivers in the history of the NFL in formation with him. We can blame the line. We can blame his ankle. We can blame poor coaching throughout the game and an unfathomable decision to go for it on fourth and forever at the 35 yard line...on turf...in a dome. We can blame the fact that he had no timeouts and was on his own 13 yard line. We can blame whatever, but it doesn't change the fact that Joe Montana is still the greatest ever.
God, can't we just forget about that nightmare and start the mother luvin season?
Brady had 35 seconds. Not 90.
I stand corrected. It doesn't change my view as legends are made in those circumstances, but you are right (to be honest, I haven't watched a tape or any replays of the game and was unable even to read about it afterwards. I misremembered it as 90 seconds and turned the TV off as soon as it was over. thanks)
Homer = Jets fans who think they're goin 16-0 cuz they now have favre.
Don't blame you... I haven't watched it either, I just remember that sinking feeling in my stomach when I thought, "Crap, TD... well, we've still got time for Brady to... crap, 35 seconds, that's it?!"
I agree that legends are made in that time, but that's just way too little time with no timeouts. He'd have to go minimum 52 yards to set up a 52 yard FG for a kicker they didn't trust on 4th and a billion during a NON pressure part of the game. If he'd actually had 90 seconds, I would agree with you.
Also, you could argue that his clutch moment was the drive before when he put the Pats ahead. There was just too much time left and the D couldn't finish off what had been a tremendous game for them thus far.
Gotta love the Montana homers. I wonder how many translated into Favre homers.
Note:
At this point in his career, Montana didn't lose a perfect season by a last minute miracle play in the SB. He was coming off a major back injury and had a "Young" dude threatening his job. You might want to review pre 1988.
If TB wins 5 SB's, that's better than 4 SB's. Why anyone would ever think being 4-0 in SB would be better than 5-1 is beyond dumb.
Montana never played in the "parity" era. People forget that the SB winners 1980-1995:
49er's 5
Cowboys 3
Redskins 3
Giants 2
Raiders 2
Bears 1
Hardly a parity league. If anything it proves that Montana was a (West Coast) "system" QB who got lucky with a coach.
Well Nut to answer your question IMO here is what I think a 'Homer' is
1) You think that Belichick is god and can do absolutely nothing wrong with any move he makes - He never judges wrong
2) You think that almost every player on this team is better than any other player in the league
3) Any Loss in a major game was the fault of the officials call on the field not for mistakes the team made or play called
4) Any player who is not showing talent on this team should get 5 years on the team before he is a bust - Other teams players (for instance Reggie Bush) who do not show something special immediately are busts in thier first year or two.
5) When Brady has a bad game you blame it on the receivers who were not in tune with Tom,You think Tom is mistake free and its the receivers who mess up,not the star player
6) When a player is not performing as well as they had in years past you look upon injuries as an excuse even though the team thought he was good enough to be on the field you say its the injuries as to why he is not once what he was
I have been a fan and I mean a BIG one since 1978 as evidenced by my Pats shrine at home (and in eagles/steelers country at that) but I am far from thinking this team makes no mistakes and I know Belichick is far from perfect -
Is BB the best coach in the league? - Yes,for now
Does BB screw up with draft picks and free agents that don't work out like all others do? - You bet
To sum it up ,a Homer is a fan who is close to delusional thinking that the team is perfect and never criticizes anything and I can't agree with that,I think the best fan in the world should have some objective opinions at times as long as it is not excessive,But of course being objective won't change things but I think there is nothing wrong with displaying your dissaproval even if its in a forum like this that the Patriots organization itself does not give a crap about or what we think.
I myself am just a huge fan that never misses or forgets about a game - But I know this team is not going to win Super Bowls every year - Its sad, but I think some in here really do believe that the team will win every single year and all 31 teams don't have a chance.
To some fans in here, making the playoffs just about every year is not good enough - There are the Homers who really need to get a dose of reality,I would love to see a Super Bowl victory every year but I have the brains to know its simply beyond impossible.
