Reed wants $7 mill a year..no wonder we were never in the hunt for him

Texans offered reed 3 years 4 mill annually....and it sounds like balts offer is in the same ball park..so no one is close to signing him

So, you WANT someone to pay Talib $8-10M next year, rather than the patriots getting more at a reasonable rate this year?????????

Exactly why I'm not really thrilled with the Talib deal. He'll play his heart out for one year and if he plays really good there is no chance that the Pats will keep him without franchising him

I hoped they could've paid him slightly more than Smith money but keep him for the rumored 5 years. I don't know the numbers of the 5 year deal but maybe he would've taken a long term deal at those prices. Next year you have Spikes, McCourty and Talib as Free Agents.

.

Why is there no chance of them keeping him?....if he plays lights out they will up his value..they wanted him for 5 years so they are interested in keeping him for a long time it seems.

McCourty isn't a free agent after next season. Signed a 5 year rookie deal

McCourty will definitely be extended this year IMO. I'd shudder to think about our secondary without him.

If Talib plays lights out then he will be franchised for what? 10m? meaning it's a 2 year contract averaging 7.5m per year and you have him in basically 2 contract years. That's not a bad deal for the pats if he does in fact play lights out and like a top 5 corner.

Spikes on the other hand i can see being let go if he asks for more money than basically what Rey Maualuga got in cincy. Only because lets face it... he is a 2 down LB sometimes even 1 Down depending on the team. Due to his poor coverage skills in general (speed in man to man i am talking about. not in zone where i think he's actually pretty instinctual)

It's not that I'm thinking that the Pats are cheap or anything but if he plays lights out you think they'll go into a bidding war for him? If he really wanted to make the long term deal happen for reasonable money I think it would've been done this season. I just don't see him as the type to give discount to any franchise and some franchise will surely overpay him. A timeline of Aqib Talib's troubles | Tampa Bay Times Just because he had a good few games we can't forget his charakter issues. At 6-7m per year on a long term deal I'd say you take a gamble on that. But at 9-10m per year I'd worry if he can stay out of trouble and be accepted in the locker room.

But with McCourty having a 5 year contract it's easier to franchise him if needed next year. Maybe Dowling has a strong year and it will be easier to replace him if needed.

if they value him as a top CB if he has a stellar year then yes i see them in the hunt..if he gets hurt like usual and has a decent year then we can really keep him. I think it's a win win singing him to a 1 year deal..at least 1 more year of him playing or trying to play lights out

I doubt DMcC is extended this year. He's only 3 yrs in to a 5 yr rookie deal. I'm right there with you that he'll definitely be extended, I just think it'll come sometime next year, which will still be a year early. I am assuming his salary to fall into the high range of safeties PLUS a little more. Something like Dashon Goldson's 5/42 deal would be very fair in my opinion, especially if we continue to use him at safety. This way he doesn't complain, he gets paid top dollar and it's really an "in between" CB/S deal. I just think they have other priorities at the moment, and want to assess him for one more year, although you may be right.

I agree that the Talib deal should be fine, although I doubt Belichick wants to franchise him at 10m+ next year--he'll definitely at least have the option.

I'm up in the air about Spikes. He has been very inconsistent up until last season where he was more of a leader and a great run stuffer. It was just last summer that many people were reading into his tweets where he seemed to be complaining. I don't know if that's true or not--but the general consensus here last summer was that he probably wouldn't be retained when his deal is up. I think if he shows a season like last year, he can make the situation more difficult for them.

Marquice Cole re-signs with the Pats, per Mike Reiss.

CB Marquice Cole has been re-signed by the Patriots, team announces. Adds depth at CB. Good special teams player.

In regards to Talib, I would have to guess that this is what they are hoping. We could have either Dowling and/or a high draft pick as a potential replacement.

Where are you coming up with the thought that the Pats wanted him for "5 years?" I haven't seen one thing that remotely suggests anything along those lines.

@MikeKlis: Elvis Dumervil underwhelmed by Broncos' latest three-year offer, according to two sources. He's planning to visit teams in next 48 hours.

@MikeKlis: Broncos must have got the same message from Dumervil camp because they're prepared to move on with either Dwight Freeney/John Abraham

McCourty re-signing is dependent on a couple of things:

  • Whether he is happy to play safety and being paid as one. He may be a good team player and moving to safety for the team, but he may decide that come the end of his rookie contract that he either becomes a CB and be paid as one or find someone who will.
  • Whether the market is driving down extension prices like it is for free agents. A lot of players may be resistant to extensions because they feel they can get much more money next year.

One would have to assume that if they were good with offering him 8 million a year last week, they'd probably offer him at least around 6 million or so now.

If Dumervil is underwhelmed with an offer like that, he surely isn't going to get anything better here as a part-time player--in my opinion.

I agree with your thought that McCourty will want better money than the average safety, that's why I thought a reasonable solution could possibly be a deal that pays him in-between the 2 positions. In other words, a top notch safety PLUS.

A deal like Goldson's recent 5/42 (8.5 million aav) would be a fine comparison to look at between the top safety's who are making 7 million and the top CB's who are making 10 million. I think this would be a great compromise. Time will tell what Belichick thinks about it, but I am guessing that he wants to retain McCourty.
