If someone could explain the ridiculous overpay of Chris Hubbard beyond "Because Browns", I'd really appreciate that.

The Browns have A LOT of money and if they don't spend it.... And overpaying a guy to lock him down for 2-3 seasons will pay dividends in later years when the $$$ doesn't seem so outrageous. Case in example, don't we wish we extended Nate Solder with say a 3 year/36M offer a year ago.....

If the Browns steal Solder, they'll likely release Thomas, won't they? $0 dead cap. $14.5m cap hit. I'm guessing he and the Pats would be a perfect match.

Thomas is a better player

Hubbard is Fleming, if that. You don't overpay for the Flemings of the world.

I can't speak for "we", but I wish they'd gotten Solder's replacement last year or the year before. Unfortunately, it's getting tougher to find quality OTs in the draft.

The reports I've seen indicate that the Browns are looking to Solder as a replacement if Thomas retires, not as a replacement for a still playing Thomas. Have you seen something different?

And His contract is team friendly. He’s taking a gamble on himself, sort of.

If he’s an all pro this year. He’ll probably be underpaid in years 2 and 3
The point is a player who may never be the same and won’t even be able to be on the field for months isn’t a steal.

I think Hubbard is a more versatile player who possesses more raw talent, but I do think that Fleming could command something in the 6m dollar a year range as a swing tackle.

Well, we haven't seen a lot of Fleming's versatility recently, but he's started games at every OL spot but Center, and he's played a lot a an extra TE (not as much this past season, because of Allen, most likely).

True. I had forgotten about his stints playing IOL.

I still think that Hubbard has a bit of a better reputation and will have a better payday, but it is definitely a good comparison.

Maybe the Pats offered him that with a $20M guarantee and Solder just wanted 2 years, $20M guaranteed without the 3rd year frou-frou.

I disagree. He likely could of done better than what he got. Hes not that old for a corner. And Achilles injuries are hardly a death sentence. If he doesn’t see the field, the 49ers are only on the hook for like 2 million if my details are correct. It was an absolute no brainer. They have everything to gain. And nothing to lose

Any player could be better or worse for any single reason

Free agency's de facto start time is today.
