This is a pretty standard way to try to gauge settlement negotiations. When the other party is out of the room, the judge can really twist the party's arm, and also try to gauge what they really would be willing to accept as part of a settlement.

On a side note, it seems like the NFL's insistence on Brady accepting the Wells Report is in large part about shielding themselves from a defamation lawsuit.

No, no, he doesn't have to commit perjury. He just has to lie and say he committed perjury during the appeal hearing as long as he isn't under oath when he says he accepts the conclusions of the Wells Report.

If I'm Brady's lawyers and I'm told that the only way the NFL will talk settlement is if Brady perjure's himself, I point that out to the judge and say it's a non-starter.. The Well report is a product of fantasy mixed with splashes of reality to try and make it smell like lavender.. The problem is that it doesn't pass the smell test of even basic High School physics..

The league trying to strong arm the situation using the Wells report shows just how desperate they are..
