Cam Robinson traded to Vikings

Interesting, he’s not great and has been injury prone but is a lot better than anyone in FA this past offseason, or oft injured V. Lowe, or any of the others they’re trotting out there at LT. He’s due to hit FA after this season.

D.J. Humphries is still available

D.J. Humphries is still available and apparently ready to play. He’s a lot better than anyone they have also

Ron Wolf’s kid and Al Groh’s kid asleep once again, it’s a real problem.

Only a 5th round pick for Cam which is not too bad. His contract is up this year, so he might want to go into FA and possibly will not resign. A 5th round pick to rent a guy for 10 games is kind of a steep price.

It’s a 2026 pick. If he came in and played well here you’d have to think they’d have a better chance of retaining him than they’d have trying to bring him in next offseason.

Mind elaborating a bit there? I've been very interested to hear about this coach and what he does well, but my eyes aren't trained enough to see beyond "line holds up" or "line gets demolished" lol.
His biggest "technique" that is easiest to see on tape on most pass pro plays is using 1 hand to punch the opponent. In a game earlier this year Sidy Sow put two arms out to get on a pass rusher who was able to bat both arms causing him to get off balance and then get right to the QB. He did not use the proper 1 hand technique and was beat easily because of it. Also, the way the players set with their lower bodies and knee position. Wallace struggles with this in pre-season but showed small improvement early on when he was playing, for example.
Scott Peters is a disciple of Bill Callahan, current Titans Line coach but a very highly regarded Line coach for the past 20+ years who has developed interesting training techniques and thoughts on lineman.
Bill Callahan is an offensive line coach who has used a variety of techniques and strategies throughout his career:
There is a Podcast here with much of the techniques talked about and look in the description for video and list of techniques they talk about.

I loved that the system has been studied, tested, is a little unique to historical teaching. It is not easy to learn it all, the fact Lowe has played so well is a testament that it works but next year he'll be able to do more with it and be even better. You still need talent and smarts but if you have that this coaching can take you to another level IMO.

AI search below kind of summarized all the articles on what Callahan/Peters system kind of is but the online podcast and videos are better if you really want to take the time as below really simplifies it.
  • Consistency, physical progression, and technique: Callahan prioritizes these qualities in his linemen, with pass protection taking precedence over run blocking.

  • Clean pocket: Callahan wants to maintain a clean pocket in the pass game so the quarterback can progress through his reads.

  • Solidness and firmness: Callahan wants his pockets to be solid and firm.

  • Squareness: Callahan emphasizes squaring off the shoulders and working up the field with squareness.

  • Pivot: Callahan teaches a technique where the backside knee pivots in to lower the center of gravity.

  • Double under foot fire: Callahan teaches a technique where the line takes a drop, braces, and pops their feet.

  • Double dip: Callahan teaches a concept called double dip to double under.

  • Hands: Callahan emphasizes getting your hands on people, and that your hands control your feet.

  • Hip flip: Callahan teaches a technique where you flip your hips to anchor.

  • Practice plans: Callahan is known for being detailed and thorough with his practice plans.

  • Prepare like a starter: Callahan believes that every player on the line should prepare and practice like a starter.

Can't get something for Nothing we have so many Hof 5th Rounders.

Maybe, but probably not. This close to free agency many players are going to free agency. Patriots are not in contention, so they would give up a 5th and potential 4th for this non-playoff season knowing he has no intention of signing a contract and will test free agency. Why would you do that?
This is a guy that played on the franchise tag 2 years in a row, he's likely going for the most money. Hard to wager on him falling in love with being in New England and foregoing the maximum contract he can get.

I agree. But he is going to leave in 10 weeks. It could be a 4th rounder we give up. He is not going to stay and if he helps us win one more game that only drops our draft pick. There is no value in having him. A team making a SB run in 2025 will overpay for him in FA and we can't start overpaying yet. We are still rebuilding.

4th rounders - Trey Flowers, Dietrich Wise. 6th rounders - Demario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte.

In reviewing Mayes college tape and looking back at QB's going back a decade, I had Maye rated as the best deep ball thrower in that last decade coming out of college. Small sample size but it's coming thru in his play already. Another check box next to get a #1 WR.

It's pretty standard for guys to look like shells of themselves in the first year back from injury and then back to "normal" in year 2. I'd expect Bourne to look diminished off his only-average self for the rest of the year. Next year I think you'd expect him to be back to his normal level as an average WR.

I wouldn't trade him now because he's the only adult in that WR room. We have so much cap this offseason that I'd probably bring him back rather than cut him to save his $5.5M salary, but depends on the rest of the WR room.

He never should've been re-signed to that contract until he showed near-complete recovery from his injury. Talk about "burning cash..."

Bourne didn't suck before the injury, he would be our best WR if he were back to 100%. It's taking a while, and tbh I don't know how these skill guys come all the way back from an ACL. Hopefully he can.

Based on KC's analysis our hierarchy appears to be:
#1 - we don't have this guy yet
#2 - Boutte
#3/slot - Douglas
#4 - Polk
#5 - Baker
not in our plans: Thornton, Osborne, Bourne

We don't have a #2 yet either.

He would've helped better-protect The Franchise, and that's something in which I find value. The question I still have is whether that value, for 10 games max if he didn't re-sign here, would've met or exceeded the potential loss of our 2026 4th-rounder...

He never should've been re-signed for all that money until he showed near-complete recovery from his injury. Talk about "burning cash..."
There was no "all that money" on him. His public contract details were agent fluff. He signed a 1 year $5.5M deal plus gameday roster/workout bonuses to make it worth up to $6.5M. And $2.8M of the cap hit on that was deferred to out years.

They essentially have an option on him after this year. If they want, they can keep him for another two years with the same structure - $5.5M cash with gameday roster/workout bonuses to get it up to $6.5M. Or they can release him and pay none of that money.

NFL free agency contracts are pretty bloated. Heading into the offseason they couldn't count on drafting anyone and they only had Pop Douglas/Boutte/Thornton under contract. They had the most cap in the league too. They had to sign some players there and a 1 year deal for Bourne at low money, almost no risk made plenty of sense and still does. Maybe the 1 year $5.5M is overpaying him by a million or two this year since he's recovering, but those essential option years are really good value for him if he bounces all the way back to pre injury form.

I don't think Wolf did a good job this offseason with contracts, but I stand by Bourne as one of the good ones.

Fascinating, thanks for the breakdown and material.

Welcome, I have a hard time believing Adrian Klemm had this level of detail last year when he was doing the job....

We need Douglas to also play like a #2 and with Henry playing the way he does and rham being the battering ram other receivers will come into play.

Boutte is definitely trending that way, on tape and with advanced analytics. For a 22-year-old receiver playing like he is the odds are pretty good he's going to be your #2.

Polk showing his separation skills on paper it's really off the charts.
