And that's baseless speculation. Edelman didn't play a down for the Patriots in the 2017 season. The team went 13-3 and scored 28.5 ppg without him. And, again, they never even punted in the SB against the Eagles. Amendola, who was the Edelman replacement, caught 8 of 11 for 152, so the idea that Edelman was somehow going to be a game changing improvement above and beyond that is a practical absurdity, because it wasn't the offense that was the problem, because the Edelman (in this game the Amendola) position sure as hell wasn't the problem, and because Edelman is not a TD receiver, having only 5 in his playoff career, which means he likely wasn't changing FGs to TDs..

Amendola brings a different skillset than Edelman. You are acting as if Edelman is simply a replaceable player in this offense. He is not. Not only does is Edelman clutch, he has a chemistry with Brady that cannot be replaced. even by Amendola. On top of that, Edelman is clearly the leader of the WR corps and the heartbeat of the offense. I stand by my statement of Edelman's importance to the team's chances of winning a super bowl. You replace Cooks last year (even if he played the whole game) with Edelman and you have a better team in the super bowl. The Pats could barely move the ball at all in the 1st half, and the Eagles dominated TOP.

It's not all about stats, which for you is easy because it's lazy and you just google it. I stand by my statement of Edelman's importance to the team's chances of winning a super bowl. The offense wasn't the problem in the 2017 SB52 loss. The refs (favoring the Eagles with 2 controversial TD decisions) and the defense (benching Butler last minute) were the reasons. How often does a team scoring 33 points lose a Super Bowl?

I realize that the defense was the big problem in that game. And I am not going to blame the officials, even though I know the Clement and Ertz TDs were controversial. Edelman just brings a different energy to this team. The offensive output was anemic in the first half. It's not a simply a matter of stats.

If Gronk retires, trading our first round for a true elite WR actually makes a lot of sense. Folks, it is going to be a exciting offseason for sure.

if it only takes our 32nd pick that would be a huge steal for us.

I do not remember the Pats offense being anemic in the first half against the Eagles. They scored 12 points, missed on a 3rd and one before settling for a short FG, missed another short FG due to a bad snap and blew the wide open pass to Brady. My recollection is that they had over 300 yards of offense in first half (though my memory may be wrong) and should have scored closer to 20 points. That said, having Edelman available would have been preferable but he'd likely have just stolen the stats from Amendola.

You think Beckham is better than any player we would get at 32?
I'm not sold on that I don't know if rather sign a free agent and use the picks to trade a franchise player.

Talent wise OBJ would be a great addition to the team but with his attitude and contract I am not interested.

A lot better, yes.

Getting Cooks for 32 was viewed as a good deal.

Getting Beckham for 32 would be robbery

You might be right, but the offense did not look right in the first half. Edelman would have just replaced Cooks, who was clueless.

While I generally agree with this sentiment...

...the sad fact remains that we needed the offense to score points in the first half to offset the historically putrid defense, and they didn't get the job done. For that failure I blame the Lost Little Cookie and Bill/Skippy's clownish short-yardage play-calling.
Would having Edelman in that game have turned those first-half zeroes into points? I don't know, but he wouldn't have hurt; that I do know.

Beckham a top 3 WR in the NFL and you’re thinking it’s likey the 32nd pick is a better player. One of these days you’ll surprise me with a good take.

I guess I value the cap and using the 32 to trade for a franchise QB and fill the Beckham cap with free agents.

I'm sorry we disagree
I think Chris Conley Jamison Crowder or Donte Montcrief plus the 32 is more valuable.
Your little dart aside I've had many correct predictions and takes.
I've been wrong it's not a exact science even for NFL GMs.
I'll stand by this Drew Lock will be a great QB I want him on the bench when Tom can't play.
Or I want Clayton Thorsen in the second.
We need a heir we can start developing.
I think we would be interested in fixing Bottles but not for anything representing big coin.

Economics play a factor too though. Cooks had a 1.5m cap charge in 2017 and would have had a relatively low 5th year option price too had the Pats kept him. For OBJ he’d immediately have a $17m cap charge. In theory that lowers the trade compensation for him. That will be offset of course by how much better he is than Cooks.

Trade for a franchise QB? We have Tom Effing Brady! He is not going away!

OBJ's cap hit next year would be 14m guys, not 17m.

Odell Beckham, Jr.

He costs the Giants 17m, but not the team that trades for him.

The Patriots have scored 3 points in 9 first quarters of Super Bowl play under Brady and Belichick. That even includes the games when Edelman played (49, 51 and 53). The offense generated 613 yards and 33 points. The defense allowed 41 points.

You need a heir and Drew Lock could sit behind Tom and learn.

Well to be fair, there have been plenty of top 3 players at their position taken at or below #32. The trick is identifying them.

If you don't think it's realistic that we hit on that, then the real question is, can we get a player at 32 for 30% of OBJ's salary (or whatever the # is) that gives us more than 30% of his production. The more players like this a team has, the deeper they advance in the postseason.

As far as QBs go, I definitely wouldn't trade #32 for a QB (or draft one with that pick). Brady is too far out from retirement for that. If we draft a QB we'd probably get him for a couple years of his rookie deal. Better to take a QB with a lower round pick and see what he can do, and if he doesn't work out then start thinking about using a high pick for a QB in a couple years.

Obviously the D was the problem in SB52 but anyone who doesn't think Jules could have made a difference is severly disrespecting Jules. He's had a huge impact on the 3 wins he's played in and easily could have made a clutch play somewhere to change the outcome.
