"Nobody Wanted Them" Secondary

It was one great night, so far. We can always hope that people will look back at that game and say it was the start of something special, but I think it was a combination of a lot of heart, some previously unrecognized talent, and the sucky version of the Jets that shows up every few games.

For right now I'm savoring the fact that until proven otherwise, they actually looked like a cohesive, focused, talented group... I was like, who are you, and what have you done with the Patriots' defense?

It was due to the pass rush..they don't get that pass rush..sanchez may have 406 not 306..still did a good job however

I think its more of the players listening to the coaches and doing what they're supposed to do. BB has done it in the past with JAG's

Not that I'm going to absolve the defense given the many and varied issues they've had season long but playing with a lead doesn't cut it as an excuse. The defense played lights out for the majority of the game before the offense even got going.

Food for thought.

Very true. The D was really playing well from that first red zone stop. They brought pressure like I haven't seen from the Pats in a long time. In fact, playing with a lead really hasn't seemed to help this D for along time. It seems like the bigger the lead early in the game the softer they play on D throughout the game.

Don't underestimate the linebackers and the job they did in the slot and on the TEs.

Tarpinian, Ninkovich and Mayo seemed to flood the passing lanes pretty well, whereas Guyton and Spikes are not very good against the pass.

Sanchez certainly held the ball quite a bit though.

Dane Fletcher would be an upgrade over Tarpinian. It should even get better back there. White actually looked good last evening as well.

If White looked good against the pass, then we may never see Guyton again except on special teams.

when I saw Edelman out there with the D, the first thing I thought was that finally, BB's D was back.

now, we just need Mayo to play some TE....

Last year, almost inexplicably, the pass defense in the 2nd half of the season improved an almost unbelievable amount. The numbers are astounding.
Given it was basically the same personnel, the concept that this coaching staff views the season as a work in progress and its purpose being improvement seems real.

There is no doubt that the pass rush was aided by the coverage just as the coverage was aided by the pass rush, which is........how it is supposed to be.

It'll be interesting to see the development of the defense in the second half of the 2011 regular season. My hope is they can improve from a complimentary unit to a dominant unit.

Cut Sergio Brown and the defensive improvement may come to fruition.

As long as they play well, I don't care who wants them or what their names are.

The Pats had a lead........Mark Sancheez......enough said.

Sanchez sucks, and certainly did suck yesterday. But the front seven wasn't helping him out the way they did in Week 2 and in the Divisional round last year. The DE duo, particularly Carter, was harassing him all day. That gave the banged up secondary the best chance possible, and they were playing mostly man coverage with at least one deep safety most of the time for a change. It should be no wonder the defense turned in their best effort.

Well you know what they say around the league. You can't stop Andre Carter, you can only hope to contain him.

WTF?

LOL... I like some of the opinions here because they're hopeful. One is an intriguing premise: what if BB's stuff works best without ego, and JAGs are therefore preferable to "name brands"?

Um okay, sort of. Cool concept. But then again, we've had defensive breakdowns with JAGs too.

Unfortunately another BB premise is at work here too: you're never as good as your best games, and you're never as bad as your worst ones.

I'm very glad to be proven wrong here of course.

I'm pretty sure a linebacking corp of DeMarcus Ware, Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis & Clay Matthews would get some good results in a BB schemed defense.

Love the BB quote because it's so true (unless you're the Colts - who are ****).

Let's keep things in perspective though. If NOT for the pass rush....these guys in secondary would have gotten torched. Everyone saw arrington do his best impression of Ellis hobbs against burress there. If that was the packers we were playing, unfortuneately our "nobody" secondary would have gotten toasted

This was an incredible accomplishment by the Patriots secondary last night. A combination of good pressure by the Dline and some timely coverage by the secondary prodiced one of the most satisfying victories I can remember in years.

The "Nobody Wanted Them" secondary!
