If I were a betting girl, I'd say their going with Jones at 3. Wouldn't be surprised to see Fields be the 5th qb selected now.

Mort on ESPN said San Fran was 90 percent in Jones!

Rich Eisen said Trey Lance a couple days ago

I believe Mac Jones is pretty much a sure thing in Shanahan's system. I sincerely doubt they will take 20 year old Trey Lance with limited big time game experience. Mac Jones in Shanahan's system will be outstanding.
If they surprise and do not take Mac Jones, Pats should trade up for him. I doubt Pats move up for either Lance or Fields.

i agree! Jones fits the San Fran system perfectly. Once jimmy breaks down, probably around mid season, Jones can step right in and be fairly comfortable.

I really do now see bb trading up for Lance, especially with Denver in front of us!

as for fields, my draft hope is fields goes to anybody but us!

Man. The hate for fields is growing by the day. What did this kid do wrong? Had an outstanding career in college. Played well in the biggest games. Showed an arm, showed athleticism, let’s not forget about his toughness. Oh, and he’s apparently really ****ing smart too! Now this guy is dropping? Silly season is in full effect.

Reminder: some GMs questioned whether Andy Dalton could succeed in the NFL simply because he's a ginger.

Belichick is arguably the most rational actor involved in the draft, and Lord knows even he makes decisions that have most of us scratching our heads.

I thought SF was locked in on Jones, as of last week...now it's maybe? These azzoles don't know what the eff they're talking about

1. They didn't trade all those picks and not know exactly who they're taking.
2. It's the smart move to create ambiguity. If it's too obvious who their guy is, the Jets may do something stupid (or in this case smart).
3. The Shanahan's went with Cousins over RG3. He had Matt Ryan in Atlanta. Mac Jones will thrive in SF. Who cares if your QB isn't super athletic when the most important traits for their system are quick decisions, accurate throws, and leadership.

I would love to see a source on that! I mean, the logic is unassailable, but I'm still curious who would be vocally questioning that.

I agree : can you imagine spending that much for a pick & THEN having a debate ? They are 99.99% confident Lawrence & Wilson are 1-2 and wanted their guy.

Accuracy is more important than arm, athleticism, toughness, intelligence and many people feel as though Field's didn't show it consistently enough. Given Jeff George not doing that well and Joe Montana winning 4 Super Bowls, teams learned not to put too much into arm strength and within the next 10-20 years, I believe they will relearn that athleticism/mobility is overrated at the quarterback position if the goal is to win Super Bowls. When he decides to run, Tom Brady is as slow as molasses and he has won 7 Super Bowls and played in 10. The 3 Super Bowls he lost, he lost to quarterbacks nearly as slow as him.

So, Fields did a lot right but other players appear to be better prospects. It isn't like he is going to drop to even the 2nd half of the first round.

Fields is being properly scrutinized. Jones has been properly scrutinized and if anything his supposed lack of mobility has been ridiculously overblown. Jones is Usain Bolt in comparison to Brady coming out of college. Instead teams with their investigators/background checkers should be making sure Jones isn't an alcoholic given his DUI and continue to test his accuracy/arm strength. Jones is clearly at least very accurate but the question is whether he is truly elite with his accuracy or just very good surrounded by a stellar supporting case.

Fields will still be a top 10ish pick. If Fields could run like a young Cam Newton his accuracy concerns would not be as big of an issue since Newton genuinely changed how defenses had to defend his team but he isn't going to be Michael Vick/Lamar Jackson/Cam Newton running the ball. Fields will be fortunate to be the next tier down so like most NFL quarterbacks his accuracy is going to make or break him. Maybe the fact that he has a mild form of epilepsy even if it is well controlled is hurting him on the margin as well. Teams will never say that but in close calls, it could hurt him.

Even Trevor Lawrence has accuracy concerns since he misses a few too many relatively easy throws but just less of them than Fields.

The above is all rational and reasonable, it's the other stuff that doesn't sit well

1. He has a poor work ethic.. which now appears completely untrue
2. poor when not throwing to his first read.. which apparently according to stats isn't actually true.

according to Lombardi, there are 30 questions that he asks regarding the prospect.
12 Of them involve “does he watch film?”
With whom? How many times? What does he wear while watching film?

If you’re giving up 3 first rounders and a third, you better know who you want. Im thinking jones as well, which is kind of a bummer hes the only top tier qb I could have seen dropping anywhere near 15. Fields has an outside shot if people are that down on him.

I watched his last three games this year and he had 1 good one. Versus Northwestern 12/27 114 yds 0 TD, 2 int and versus Alabama 17/33 194 yds 1 TD 0 int......
