I know it is extremely early and we have Gronkowski on his way back, however I still want to ask the question, should we consider trading for a wide receiver or tight end?

Couple of players who could potentially be or become available:

• Emmanuel Sanders – the Steelers had a terrible game yesterday and lost some key players to injury.
• Hakeem Nicks – in the final year of his contract and the Giants just signed Cruz for big money.
• Mercedes Lewis – the Jags looked awful yesterday, maybe they’d look to unload Lewis and his big cap number; we could then potentially restructure his contract.
• Kenny Britt – the Titans have a lot of young receivers; Britt could be this year’s Talib.
• James Jones – he appears to be behind Cobb, Nelson, and Finely in GB despite a breakout 2012.

Just some thoughts I know there are probably a lot more players that could be possible targets.

Nicks and Britt is the only ones of them I would invest anything in. Jones has had one good year Lewis cap number is big and not sure if he would restructure. Sanders is a guy we went after and drafted other guys when it didn't happen.

I'm not seeing it. WR and TE aren't positions where you just insert guys into contributing roles right away. The rookies just need more practice with Brady, where any new guys brought in would need both to learn the playbook and establish a connection with Brady.

They don't need to be immediate contributors in order for it to make sense, it's going to take time to do those things you mentioned but that's still the case with the rookies, but the seasoned vet won't be making the rookies mistakes our guys are.

With TEs, we need help bad, there's Gronk and then garbage, an upgrade would help us even if it takes them a bit to get running.

Yes, I would definitely agree with this thinking.

We simply cannot expect someone to step in and pick up the offense.

If anyone is a possible trade candidate, and the odds would be low even at this, it'd be an inline TE who we're probably not familiar with. I think there is a much better chance that they'd consider bringing back Fells and/or combining the waiver wire instead.

I think there's a reason why Belichick went after a possible target in Sanders this year, and that was done very, very early on. Once that didn't work he had plenty of time to address the situation with other moves, yet chose to go the route of the draft instead. If he were going to bring someone else in at this point in time, it'd likely be one of the journeyman WRs that we've looked at in the past who have some experience with this system.

I think he's made his decision in terms of retooling the WRs with speed and youth, and likely expected a learning curve involved. My opinion is that he would have made a move like that a long time ago if it were an option.

I agree with you that we need a blocking TE though, and I'm hoping that they break down and call Fells for a return.

I'd give the Niners a sixth (hey, even a 5th) for Boldin

Are you just screwing around, or are you serious? Sorry, my sarcasm meter is off here.

The 49ers traded the exact same compensation to bring Boldin in, and after putting up 208 yds and 13 catches in week one--my guess is that they wouldn't find much reasoning in parting with him.

Maybe trade for the 49ers backup TE Garret Celek.

I'd cream my pants if we signed Nicks or James Jones, but it isn't happening.

Aside from Jake "the gimp" Ballard, Daniel Fells is the only tight end left available on the market who has experience with the New England Patriots offense.

I can't really see any of these guys being traded for.

What's Deion Branch up to these days? Randy Moss?

Judging by where Kenny Britt went to college, that seems like an inevitable acquisition.

I agree--no way Belichick is going to dedicate that much money to the position, and Nicks will likely be a 8-9m dollar per year receiver, if not even more.

Yes, I was just screwing around, but the point is a talent like Boldin could have been had for a measly 6th round pick

Oh, no doubt. I was very disappointed to learn that he was had for such a low compensation value.

Of course, just b/c his brother traded him to SF doesn't mean they'd have done that with us either, so that's something we all should remember too.

Common sense would likely point to Belichick have being very interested for such a low round pick, unless he simply didn't want to "overpay" (in his mind) for an older player, which is always possible. My guess would be that one Harbaugh did another Harbaugh a favor and that they would never have traded with us though.

I will never understand why we didn't go for Boldin when the Ratbirds signed him. Dude is a beast and a fighter. Sigh...

The Ravens traded for him after it was reported that the Pats and the Chiefs were in the lead to acquire him. I'd say they either made an effort or Aaron Wilson, very well respected for his reports on all teams, was badly misled.
