In 2002, the NFL adopted a standard rotation schedule. It has much upside, including less prone to tampering to benefit or hurt one team and avoids long stretches were two teams will not meet.
The downside is the SB teams do not necessarily have a difficult SOS the following year and there is only a one in four chance that SB will be replayed the next year. In the past such a game would be alway be scheduled. The Patriots will not play the Giants next year; this year we did not see Bears - Colts.
Because the #1 seed in a div plays all the other #1 seeds in their conference. Most teams but not all get to avenge their prior year exit. The Colts will play the Chargers, Chargers - Pats, Jax - Pitt; Dal - Giants; Sea - Giants; but not all no GB - Giants or titans-chargers.
The schedule only has a 25% chance of having what would be the biggest game of the season, it was played. Colts - Bears would have been huge. Who isn't disappointed their won't be a Giants - Patriots game next year?
So here is what I propose for the 2010 season, when scheduling is up. Keep things as it is except. Manually tweak the schedule so there is a match-up if it would not occur naturally, by taking away the weakest possible home game non-div. competitor of the winners and the weakest possible road non div. competitor of the loser.
For example: next year instead of NE at Oakland and SF at NYG the games become NE at NYG and SF at Oakland.
Maybe even make the rematch the Thursday night home opener. Think about the positive effect that would have. All off season the talk last year there would have been about will the Bears avenge their loss. And if next years home opener was the Patriots going to Giants stadium that game would have as much hype as a SB. All off season are the Patriots done? Was that game a fluke? Not to mention giving the fans and players of the losing team something huge to look forward to.
