NFL investigating Saints for placing bounties on players(merged X2)

The aftermath of Katrina was awful and FEMA got and deserved a big Fail for all of it...but, I am so sick and tired of having to listen to the subsequent "feel good" stories about the Saints, who essentially exploited the disaster to boost ticket sales and their local brand.

Most of the issues were the fault of the Louisiana Government and the New Orleans City Government. But that is neither here nor there.

The Saints didn't exploit the disaster unless you call the players putting in thousands of hours of their own time helping people out "exploitation".

They are saying that the Owner's Meeting in later this month will discuss the punishment for this activity.

Apparently it is going to be handed down by the league between Early April and Draft Day.

I'll take a pass on that.

3 reasons:

1. It's ignorant when other teams pigeon hole the Pats as cheaters for Spygate

2. Saints fans aren't even in the top 25 of fanbases who harp on the "Cheatriots" horsecrap.

3. I refuse to disrespect Phereins team like that. He is a class act as a visiting poster, when the overwhelming majority of rival team posters are trolling like its closing time at the club..... I'd take him over half the posters on this board.

Agreed- we were on the other side of this type of thing not too long ago. The Saints deserve to be punished, and this is a whole lot worse than Spygate, but there's still a lot that we just don't know.

Funny that Williams himself already apologized for this yet Sharper says nothing happened.

Perhaps lying to us and his own self just to feel better about winning a title which was his ONLY title as a player during the said years?

Maybe Sharper had a colon disease called 'Sunday morning Diarreah' which sent him into the bathroom for an hour before kickoff and made him miss each week of the bets placed on the table in the Saints Locker Room to see which player will go after and Maim the QB for collecting the 'prize'

I don't get the schadenfreude. The Saints' fanbase is one of the finer fanbases around. Had this happened to the Steelers, Jets, or Dolphins, I'd be all over it. Those fanbases deserve something like this, but to see that it's the Saints brings me no joy.

I do think it's worse than "whatever-gate", but I hope the league hands down the appropriate punishment, whatever that might be.

I just hope Pats fans don't start being dillweeds around Saints fans and Saints boards, but I'm already seeing it around. I guess we didn't learn anything.

The Patriots took pictures from the wrong spot in the stadium. The Saints were doing things that could have destroyed careers and interfered with the quality of life of fellow players. Their Super Bowl title may be a product of deliberately injuring the opposing quarterback in a playoff game.

I'm not sure why this is supposed to be about protecting the Saints fan base. It should be about dealing with those responsible for this, and that allegedly goes all the way from players to coach to GM and, to an extent, to the owner. That's essentially the entire organization.

I will simply say this, and leave it here as far as this thread goes:

We each have our own opinions as to where the blame for the human disaster of Hurricane Katrina lies. Neither of us is going to convince the other of our respective positions, and given that this is a football forum, not a political one, I will not discuss politics any further here.

I don't believe there is a salary cap violation because the money was provided by the players themselves and not by the team.

That being said, I expect Payton and Loomis to be fined significantly. I expect Williams to be suspended from the league indefinitely. I expect the players to get fines and suspensions.

As for the Saints, I wouldn't be surprised if they lost the franchise tag this year, a 1st round pick next year and a 1st round pick the year after.

Under the system, Saints players regularly contributed cash into a pool and also received cash payments for plays like interceptions and fumble recoveries. According to a memo sent to N.F.L. teams explaining the situation, money was contributed to the pool by at least one outsider, Michael Ornstein, a marketing agent who is close to Payton. Ornstein pledged $10,000 toward a quarterback bounty in the playoffs during the 2009 season, and offered substantial sums toward a bounty on a quarterback last season on at least two occasions — once in an e-mail to Payton.

The Donkeys' salary cap violations cost them a third, and Spygate cost the Patriots a first, so I'd say losing a first and a third sounds about right. But, unfortunately, the Saints don't have a first in 2012, so I'd "settle" for a second in 2012 and a first in 2013.

If you're quoting someone else that had a comment previously in the thread, there's a big blue rectangle on the bottom right that says "quote"


If you're quoting something else you have two choices. Once you hit reply you will see two rows of icons at the top. On the lower row, the 4th icon from the right is a yellow square; that's your quote button.

The other alternative is to type your text; at the end of the text you want quoted type [/quote] and before that, in the beginning of the text you want quoted type
