Why, he hasn't hit a 50-yarder in over 4 years.JJDChE said:Downside? Vinatieri would be even more overpaid. Ooops, that's an upside.

AdamJT13 said:Yeah, there's one downside -- it's the worst rule in the history of sports. An offense is supposed to drive the ball as far as it can, if not across the opponent's goal line. You don't reward an offense for doing WORSE just because it has a kicker than can hit from 50-plus. An offense that drives from its own 20 to its opponent's 1 before kicking a field goal shouldn't be given fewer points than an offense that drives from its own 20 to the opponent's 33 before stalling. And I'd rather never see a situation when an offense tries to LOSE yardage in order to try a four-point field goal instead of trying to gain yardage and scoring only three -- especially in the final seconds of a game. If anything, longer field goals should be worth LESS than shorter ones. It's football, not a kicking contest.

Tunescribe said:You make some reasonable points. I was thinking more in terms of the extra stratetgic option available late in a game when a team is down three or four points and can't get it in the end zone. Few kickers can hit consistently from 50-plus, so it would be a big gamble in any case. You must agree that the chances of hitting a 50 yarder are much less than a 30 or 40 yarder, so why not reward that special feat with an extra point?
Say the Pats are down by four at the end of the game, on the opponent's 33 with four seconds left. Wouldn't you rather see a 50-yard field goal attempt to tie the game than a futile lob into the end zone?
