If they want to do that, they'd have the change the rules for scoring TD's. Under the current rule, you would need enough chips to account for the entire surface of the ball, one small chip wouldn't work for an oblong ball. It wouldn't even work if you put 2 chips, one at each "point" of the ball because the middle of the ball could break the plane.So they can add chips to the balls to try to determine if the should mess with the game, but not to accurately figure out if the ball crossed the goal line...
