In large part due to Godchaux, the Patriots were the #1 defense in the league yards per rush last year, allowing just 3.3 yards per rush.
Lawrence Guy played a lot too. He started 12 games last year. Stout. I fear a player of his ability will be missed.

When you look at the guys who in that group, it was a three-man rotation:
- Barmore, 750 snaps, 66%
- Godchaux, 685 snaps, 60%
- Lawrence Guy, 521 snaps, 46%

Ekuale (53 snaps), Trysten Hill (4 snaps) and Pharms (90 at DE/DT) barely got on the field.

It's the type of position that demands a rotation, which means the #3 player needs to be of decent quality.

Right now the next in line consists of Ekuale, Armon Watts, Sam Roberts, Hill, and perhaps Pharms, if I am not mistaken.

Somebody needs to step up. You have a very valid concern, in my opinion.

The Pats are in a bad situation. If they give Godsmack a raise, they will be forced to pay Judon or he will probably holdout. In fact, the percentage of his contract is already guaranteed more than Judon. That's a huge problem. Unfortunately, if the Pats don't pay Judon, he will get traded.

Guy was phased out last season and Barmore is officially the main guy on the line now. Wise/Godsmack/Barmore is your interior.

Wise versus Guy in the interior? Guy is far more stout, weighing a good 30 pounds more. I look to see Sow getting good movement out of Wise on the practice field during TC. Guy has been an unsung hero in these parts for the past several years. I loved the guy.

This is why I wanted the Patriots with all their cap space to sign Daquan Jones from the Bills. The Patriots GM made a mistake. A rookie mistake.

I thought of Barmore and Godchaux's as the DT's.

And, I thought of Guy and Wise as DE's, with White taking more and more of Guy's reps.
============================
DEFENSIVE TACKLES (Godchaux and Barmore plus one)
Yes, we need a rotation/backup in the middle. Pharms or Ekuale could fill that role. [or Adams or Hill}

DEFESNSIVE ENDS (Wise and White plus one)
Yes, we need a 3rd DE. Adams or Roberts or Hill could fill that role

If White is needed more as an OLB (if Judon goes) then this diminishes the depth at DE.

IMO, each extension is different.

We can certainly afford both Godchaux and Judon. That is NOT the issue.

For Judon, the open question is whether the team wants to extend him for 2-3 years as part of the future, or just move one. It is hard to say that this will create a great hole in the Defense since Judon wasn't here for almost all of 2023.

Losing Godchaux is much more serious. We CANNOT just put in Pharms and Ekuale and HOPE for success against the run. We must at least give Godchaux enough of a bump to keep him happy until he can choose to be a free agent next off-season. The situation would then be like Dugger's this year.
