I'm really not trying to be some kind of heavy handed jerk here, but this isn't really an assessment that can be made with any degree of accuracy right now.

I'm going to use the Eagles again as an example, because their OL was universally considered to be among the best in the NFL in 2017. Again, they used nine offensive linemen, 35 year old Peters - whose career has been particularly injury plagued - and fifth round draft choice Vaitai - a second year player - played most of the snaps at LT.

I'm not saying any of this is ideal, but that's the point: You are rarely going to have the same five OL on the field the entire season. At *some* point in the season, or perhaps the entire season, you're going to be rotating players who aren't prototypical for the particular positions they're playing.

A "best five" strategy is far more efficient and lends itself to consistency than does a philosophy that dictates specific criteria need to be met for a player to succeed at a given position on the line.

That does NOT necessarily mean that whatever the Patriots decide to do will be successful. What it DOES mean is that you don't need a prototypical left tackle to put out a good, consistent OL group.

Lombardi has turned into a crackpot. There was a time when he was writing for the National Football Review when he was very good and a must read. Rumors were that BB respected him.

Years back In the front office in Cleveland, something happened that sent him spiraling out of control. I dont recall the specifics, but I remember that he made some real nutty endorsements that were fit for the crazy house. Some involved NE.

Is your point that we should not permanently typecast players? Fair enough. My memory may be a little grey at this time but I believe Cannon has attempted to play LT as well as OG and struggled. On the other hand both Cannon and Fleming struggled a few years back under Dave DeGuglielmo's tutelage and posters on this board wanted them off the team as soon a possible.
They appeared to have lead feet at that point in their careers. (The LT for a right handed QB needs to be Cat like quick...)

Their improvement is a result of both high quality coaching and experience.

Is your point that we should not permanently typecast players? Fair enough. My memory may be a little grey at this time but I believe Cannon has attempted to play LT as well as OG and struggled. On the other hand both Cannon and Fleming struggled a few years back under Dave DeGuglielmo's tutelage and posters on this board wanted them off the team as soon a possible.

Their improvement is a result of both high quality coaching and experience.

...Waddle was ok at LT previously when fully healthy...

Waddle played a couple of handfuls of snaps at LT vs the Jesters in Joisy in December 2015...before he got himself injured...and that is it...and he wasn't really ok at it either.

Waddle & Fleming are decent backup-calibre RTOs, no more no less.

I think Waddle and Flemming's situation mirrors the Slater one....and the Hightower one. The Pats have given them their ballpark market values according to BB, and they encouraged them to go see what's out there. I think they do that with all their FA's they want back. Sometimes it works, as with Slater, and sometimes not, as with Solder.

If Dallas didn't blow either away, I think at least one will be back and my guess is it will be Waddle on a 2 year deal
