Julian Edelman doesn't tend to get the credit and respect he deserves around the league, but one former player took notice in a recent ESPN segment, putting him ahead of some notable names which created some controversy.

See my latest mock below. I do think it’s difficult to fit three additional receivers on the roster but I’m also aware that as things stand, we have no receivers next season which, frankly, is awful planning. I’d be keen to give new receivers a head start on next year.

First, as is my bias, I ignore the picks after the 4th round. For me, I know Belichick will find 2-4 but I haven't a clue which ones (or UDFA's).
    ======
    BOTTOM LINE ON TRADING
    Use: 56, 64, 73, 97
    Trade down: 32 (to 43), 101 (to 111), and 134 (to 142)
    Compensation received for moving down: 143, 2020 3rd and 2020 4th
    ==============
    PLAYERS AND NEEDS
I'm more than fine with Little, Smith, Hardman, Sanu, and Banogu. You meet key needs at OT, ready to play TE, WR/R, vet WR and ST/LB.

I would rather sign a vet DT than use the pick at 64. I'd prefer Knox there, or one of the other TE's. If DL is the pick, perhaps someone like Zack Allen might work out better for the future.

I wouldn't be surprised if Belichick picks Little at 32; 43 seems to be a serious risk. The net loss would basically be one of the 2020 picks.

So, for me, pick 64 could be a TE or an EDGE player instead of a DT.

I was going to have us sign a vet DT but the Sanu Trade probably ruled out McLaurin for me which left CB or S and I just don’t think we have room on the roster for either. Khalen is an exciting prospect though and I’d be prepared to carry 4 DTs plus Butler to keep him on the roster.

I prefer Saunders to Collyer and Omenihu.

    Thoughts

#1 Trading up likely makes no sense in round one. I just don't think the board will give us a reason to.

#2 Trading out of the first is a real possibility. While I like the 5th year option it is possible this board could fall in such a way where trading down is the best move. Luckily the #32 pick will always be in demand cause a team will want that 5th year option. If things break badly for us I could see it happening.

#3 This may be one of the best 3rd round I've seen in a long time. Usually the Pats do very bad in the 3rd but this one will be REALLY good. They better hit in it. Frankly I don't think I'll look back at the 4th round as being good value. By the time the Pats pick in the 4th I don't think I'll care for many options.

#4 While I'd love to trade down and stock up on talented guys this draft I keep reminding myself our roster just don't have room for it. I certainly don't believe we'll leave the first 3 rounds of this draft with 6 players. We're for sure going to trade at least 1 pick into next year and I think we'll pass up on someone I really like to do it.

#5 While I'd like to leave this draft with a bunch of good players in reality the Patriots only need to leave this one particular draft with three things. DL help, 1 WR, 1 TE. While I'd like them to get some safety help, OL help and maybe a double dip at the offensive skill position it isn't absolutely needed. What is needed is to at least get those spots worked out. That all being said if they don't leave this draft with 2 legit WR options I think they'll have missed an opportunity.

#6 Roster building is important, but in the end what wins or loses you a super bowl isn't 63 guys, 53 guys or even 46 guys. It's more like 40 guys with 20 core players. If they leave this draft with 3 true core players that be amazing.

In tonight's draft, the roles of 'Deion Branch' and 'David Givens' will be played by Mecole Hardman and Stanley Morgan Jr.

Fingers crossed. We’re you aware one of Morgan’s comps was Givens?

No, I hadn't seen that! I was picturing Hardman as a returner and developmental WR, and mentally paired him with Morgan as a more "ready" route runner and possession guy. Then the image of Branch & Givens naturally came to mind.

I said when I watched Morgan initially that he reminded me of that era of Patriots receivers.

Hardman is my number 1 slot receiver.

I really think Ridley and Morgan could take over hogan’s Role and do it better than Hogan.

    McLaurin >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Slater.
The Late Prisoner wasn't really known for his blocking prowess, IIRC.

Just Say NO to physically unimpressive U of Georgia WRs ANYWHERE NEAR the top 100.

Maybe? He can't be any worse, that's for sure. Neither can I for that matter.

    Here's my random thoughts:

    • I think there will be more QBs taken in the first than currently projected. That could be good news for position players falling to 32.
    • Will Grier or Daniel Jones might be the pick for the Pats at 32 or he might be off the board with other teams trading ahead of the Pats at the end of round 1.
    • I like the idea of a trade back from 32 or a trade up to the top of the 2nd. Too many of my binkies come off the board between 32 and 56.
    • I think the first 3 picks will be DL, TE, OL. WR wont be drafted until Round 3.
    • Special teams ability will be a major factor in selecting WR.
    • Looking at the Patriots depth chart there is a good chance to upgrade talent with the following positions making the 53 man roster 2WR, 2TE, 1IOL, 1OT, 1DE, 1LB, 1DL, 1S

Definitely warning up to Mecole Hardman. Could be a poor man’s Tyreek Hill minus the legal problems. We really could use Hardman’s speed and explosiveness in special teams as well.

I really am starting to think that Chris Lindstrom will be gone by 32 which pains me as I was really coming round to the pick. Daniel Jeremiah has him going at 27, heck, Mel Kiper suggested he go to the Packers at 12. He’s one of those very late risers you see every year that ends up going much higher than you expected.

I don't value guard so I'm ok with him being not available although he might be the best guard in the draft.
