Mike Reiss nigh on gives his 53 man squad...

I believe that cost and position are already factored. But, I do agree that if our longsnapper were listed at 54, we still would have a long snapper on the 53. However, I would consider such a ranking a mistake on the part of Reiss.
===============

I would think that, absent injury or holdout, Reiss would be surprised if any of his top 50 don't make the roster. The obvious current situations are Mankins and Welker. You and I have questions about Pryor and prehaps Slater, but that gives 48 who are very likely to make the roster, and the 5 roster spots at the bottom of the roster. Of course, more spots could open up because of injury/

BOTTOM LINE
This is a pretty solid 48. Of course, they aren't "locks". We have n't seen some of the players in live action yet.

And 5 spots still to be decided seems a bit small; but, given injuries, more of the 51-70 will make it. I certainly think that wheatley, Bussey and Connolly have a solid shot at the roster.

Ive been meaning to ask you about the Gs.
You seem consistently down on Connolly, the guy who was the #3 G even expecting a 6th rounder to bump him maybe.
Also you seem to be very anti Ohrenberger. Again, you have him, a 4th rounder with a year in the system, behind 6th round rookies.
I thought that Ohrenberger was a guy the staff was pretty high on and that he was in the future plans. In fact I thnk you have given a better chance to Bussey who wasn't on the roster last year than to Ohrenberger who was all year. Do you know something I don't?

I think those last 3-5 are a group though, and which player is the '53rd best value' depends on which are 51 and 52. In other wordsLarson may be more valuable than Pryor if dont keep Ohrenberger or less valuable if we do.

We usually carry two backup interior linemen, one of whom is the backup center.

Connolly seems to be a reasonable backup, the best of the bunch. I don't count Kaczur as a backup guard, since for me, he is either a starting LG or a backup at both tackle positions. I don't see how I am down on Connolly because I don't see him as a regular starter. I think that he is a valuable backup.

The open question is who we should keep on the roster as potential starting interior linemen in 2011 and 2012. We have several possibilities: Connolly, Larsen, Ohrnberger and Bussey. If Mankins stays, we need two backups who have the potential to start in the future. If Mankins goes, it may be useful to have an experienced backup for 2010 in case of injury. Kaczur would be the starting LG.

CONNOLLY
A solid backup who could start now if necessary. For me, if Mankins is gone, I want Connolly to have a roster spot for sure. With Mankins here, and with Kaczur and LeVoir as my Game Day backups, I can afford to have two developmental interior linemen, a guard and a center. I suspect that push came to shove, I would still keep Connolly.

LARSEN
Is worth a year of development? Is he a better prospect than Ohrnberger. Certainly, Reiss thinks so. Is Larsen the best of the backup centers, still leaving a spot for a backup guard? I suspect that Larsen has the most potential at CENTER. This makes him worth a roster spot to me.

OHRNBERGER
I would not choose Ohrnberger as my backup guard. I would choose Connolly. I didn't like the choice of Ohrnberger last year, and I don't think he has shown much. The recent rankings by Reiss would indicate that he agrees.

BUSSEY
And why do I keep mentioning Bussey? Why do others? I think Bussey has potential at LT as well as guard. It is this flexibility that could give him a roster spot, especially if Kaczur is starting at LG. There would be the #4 OT spot open. Welch is certainly safe on the Practice Squad.

MY BACKUPS IF MANKINS STAYS
Kaczur, LeVoir
Connolly, Larsen

MY BACKUPS IF MANKINS GOES
Connolly, LeVoir
Larsen, Bussey

I'm not sure Mankins will leave. If so, it maybe for a future 2nd rounder (doubt he'll draw a 1st). And I'm not sure I'd keep Bussey either.
