Mike Pennel released

Has Parry really shown himself ready to be one of the 3 run-stuffing DT's? Butler is an inside pass rusher. BTW, I could see Parry or Cowart competing for one of the last defensive roster spots with Rivers and ObiWan.

If we cut Pennel, we would need to acquire another potential DT starter. I suppose that we could acquire a backup, if we all of a sudden think of Shelton as a starter.
====
BOTTOM LINE
Pennel is worth having on the roster: as parter of the 3 man DT rotation, or even as a 9th or 10th DL.
Parry started every game his first 2 seasons in the league before having off field problems detract his career. I would say he has proven himself capable in the past.

He seemed to turn it on and off, both in practice and the practice games, and I don't think this coaching staff will make room for that on the roster. Just too much of a downer to the overall culture to have a vet player be inconsistent on (what seems to be) an entirely personal schedule.

I think it comes down to how many DTs BB wants to keep.

Guy
Bennett
Butler
Cowart
Shelton

If they choose to keep 315lb Parry to make it 6, that'll be one less of Wise or Rivers-type players.

Don’t sleep on Parry. If you read the practice reports carefully, he has been sneaky good during training camp and he caught my eye last week vs. the Titans. I agree that Cowart will make the 53, but Parry could sneak in in front of Shelton, or they could keep both, if they feel that Cowart has enough versatility to play both tackle and end.
You have to have a backup inside run defender and it’s not Cowart.
We have 4 roles at DT
1) Stud run defender NT type double team eater
2) good run defender but more agile than 1 struggles as a double team eater
3) backup for 1 and 2
4) smallish DT best suited as a pass rusher, not a guy you want at the point of attack especially in nickel base

Shelton is 1
Guy is 2 (but ideally either he is 3 or 3 is more of a 1)
We have no 3 unless it’s parry
Cowart and butler are 4

IMO Guy, Shelton and Cowart are certain, and Parry barring an outside acquisition. The question mark is Butler, who has been an every-game active for two seasons but could lose a lot of snaps to Cowart as the season goes on. I'd very much like to keep all five, but then again I'd also like to keep 6 WRs and 7 LBs and....

Bennett is a DE

Cowart really seems like an upgrade to the butler role. Really in every way, he seems to be a better pass rusher and is not as overmatched vs the run

They are going to play him all over.
They aren’t playing him at DT in the nickel base.
Moving a de inside on passing downs is a totally different matter.

I think parry best out Pennel. Which makes it all make a little sense.

I’d assume this is a direct result of how well Shelton has played. I read somewhere he lost a little weight and is more comfortable in his second year in the system.

Right, which is why Butler is the big question mark. The rookie seems like the future, we just don't know what kind of responsibilities they think he's ready for at this point.

As an NT, no. As a 3-3-5 hes playing DE. In the 4-2-5 he's playing DE and DT.

I'm not that surprised about this to be honest, he seemed inconsistent by all reports.

Really happy about the last 2 drafts. This team needed/ could use youth and cap relieve.

N’Keal Harry
Joejuan Williams
Chase Winovich
Damien Harris

Yodny Cajuste
Hjalte Froholdt
Jarrett Stidham

Byron Cowart
Jake Bailey
Jakobi Meyers
Isaiah Wynn

Sony Michel

Ja’whaun Bentley
Keion Crossen

Ryan Izzo
J.C. Jackson

How many of those guys have actually proven anything in the NFL? Michel and Jackson, that’s about it. Even Jackson is a bit of a stretch given how CB’s seem prone to slumps after breakout years

...which is a lot
Some 3rd and longs and 2 minute drill.
But that’s a DE role not a DT. Chandler Jones, Flowers, long etc. none of them were DTs.

Not to belittle the O.P. or his question in any way, but I think this is a question better asked after week 2, or even week 3. I think we call all (or at least most) agree that the player in question getting cut before that would be a big surprise, and that means the the player will have another week or two of evaluation by the team. That's the usual approach with veteran players who've made it to the exhibition games portion of the off season.

There have obviously been exceptions, but I think a position as thin as run stuffing DT is likely safe from that.

Doh
