I'm sure most will take Steve at his word that the reason he left is due to a medical issue, and not about an investigation into him as an assistant coach.

After all, getting drugs and hookers for underage recruits is one thing, but lying about the reasons for going on leave would be going too far.

My main point is that while Steve "left the team" in the sense that he's on medical leave and is very likely to be at a drug rehab, he didn't leave the team in the sense that he's still a UNC employee and is still making a lot of money.

This is different from Lombardi, who abruptly chose to walk away from $1.5M/year by resigning shortly after his lawyer told the world that he was the victim of a witch hunt. There's only a few reasons I can think of why he'd do that.

The quote above about Steve being linked to drug use and not necessarily to "hookers" suggests to me that it is probably Mike who brought the "hookers" into the picture, but that's just my suspicion.

It's sounding like Steve may have been setting the recruits up with "dates" to curry favor with them and may have partaken in that himself.

Inference may be a bit strong. The reports are that UNC hired lawyers/investigators who asked questions not just about Mike, but also about Steve. These investigators asked direct questions about Steve and drugs. The questions about sex were "unrelated to Steve Belichick' as per the following quote.

Lawyers conducting the UNC probe focused a series of questions on Steve Belichick, according to people who were interviewed. The people said they were also asked about whether Steve Belichick had used drugs at the university’s facilities or if they knew of anyone who had seen him do so. Assistant coaches can be fired for cause if it is found that they used or distributed illicit drugs, according to UNC employment contracts.

Unrelated to Steve Belichick, sources also told WRAL that the lawyer asked about reports of a purported sexual relationship between a female recruiting staff member and at least one UNC player. The people also said they were asked about similar possible relationships between assistant coaches and recruiting staff.

So far Steve is still UNC's defensive coordinator and is on medical leave. No one has said what the nature of the medical issue is or how long he'll be out.

Word out of Chapel Hill is that Steve Belichick's health absence is related to substance abuse treatment. I hope he gets the care he needs to get back into coaching at some level. His name associated with players' use of drugs may be the end of his college coaching career. NC is not even a recreational marijuana state - hard core state legislature on that issue. It may be very benign but in a high profile job like that, getting high with the kids is not a good career choice. It was never a problem finding what you needed in Chapel Hill, by the way. While we're at it - Vote No on #8.

Another says Jordon Hudson has gained control of about $8M of real estate since 2023.

Another suggests Fat Mike struggled to hold a job his entire adult life, and is now unemployed.

Things just don't add up that well for ol' Mike.

One has to think that there may be some truth to the speculation that UNC would use this, and have their own investigators looking into this to get out of their $20 million buyout

Let's get real.

Teams never investigate themselves. This stuff is normal at every single football program. Let's be real.

UNC is investigating this because they want to use it for cause to get out of the contract.

Many teams have tried this before. It all ended up in court, and that's where this is headed.

This same school, UNC, once had internal investigators blow the whistle on one of the biggest scandals in college sports history, and you did not hear a peep about it, until the NCAA came calling.

That's really all you need to know about what is going on at UNC right now.

Teams investigate themselves quite frequently. They do it before the NCAA gets involved. They know if they investigate and the dole out their own punishment, it may save them from getting an even worse punishment from the NCAA.

The Miami Hurricanes scandal started with an internal investigation by the school and blew up into a major scandal where the NCAA got involved because it seemed clear Miami was trying to cover up as much as they were trying to find out the facts.

OSU investigated Urban Meyer and punished him and his staff.

ASU investigated their recruiters to see if they violated COVID recruitment policies.

Michigan investigated AD Warde Manuel after he covered up things like sign stealing, Sherrone Moore having an inappropriate sexual relation with a staffer and then getting arrested for stalking her, etc. He was fired due to the investigation.

I'm sad that Belichick has tarnished his legacy so much over the last half decade or so. I know Spygate and Deflategate (even though that was more of a Brady scandal than his) was always going to be part of his legacy, but I think they really didn't tarnish his legacy as much because people realize that they both had little to with the winning.

But you cannot get past some of the awful decisions he made in his final years with the Patriots or how he has allowed his girlfriend to be such a magnet for negative attention for him. This could be the topper of his legacy if the investigation all comes down on him.

I will always remember of as the GOAT and how much of a football genius he was especially in the early parts of the dynasty. He changed the game in many ways.

But last impressions are lasting and most of his last impressions are far from flattering.
